ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After the stage play was cleared up and I’d changed out of the Snow White costume and back into my school uniform, I lay slumped over a desk in an empty classroom. The troublesome play had finally ended, but thanks to Reona, I was so utterly exhausted that I couldn’t bring myself to move.
Since everyone else was probably out enjoying the school festival, I figured no one would be coming back to the classroom for a while, making it the perfect spot to take a break. I even felt like if I let my guard down, I’d fall asleep right then and there.
“…‘Don’t worry, you’ll understand soon enough’—what the hell was that supposed to mean?”
I couldn’t stop thinking about those words Reona had suddenly blurted out. She’d said them right after that public kiss, which made me start wondering if maybe she meant that kind of thing.
But someone like me—a Background Character B—could never possibly be a match for someone like Reona or Riona, who were basically main heroines. Besides, the way the two of them were getting involved with me was surely just a temporary thing. So even if—no, even if by a one-in-a-billion chance that was what she truly meant, maybe the right thing to do was pretend not to notice it.
Sure, I had fallen for Reona and Riona, but the person they should be standing next to definitely wasn’t me. As I lay face-down on the desk, lost in those thoughts, I suddenly felt a breath against my ear.
“Uwah!?”
I shot up with a loud yell, startled, and there stood Riona. Just like Reona, it seemed the Tsurugi sisters had a thing for blowing on my ear. That thought crossed my mind, but when I saw the pout on Riona’s face, I realized what I had done.
“I waited for you, so why didn’t you come? It was really hard trying to find you, Ryouya.”
“S-Sorry…”
I’d promised to go around the school festival with Riona during the morning after the play. And I had completely forgotten that promise. To be precise, I had remembered it clearly before the play, but Reona’s unexpected improvisation completely blew it out of my mind. Not that I thought that kind of excuse would fly with Riona, so I didn’t say it aloud.
“I don’t think I can forgive you for forgetting our promise.”
“I’m really sorry. I swear I didn’t do it on purpose.”
“I’ll have to give Ryouya another punishment.”
Unless I was imagining it, these punishments were definitely starting to pile up. Was I going to be okay? Riona had a way of casually making some outrageous demands, which made her kind of terrifying. For now, I needed to focus on getting her back in a good mood.
“W-Well, how about we get going for now?”
“I already know where I want to go, so I’ll take the lead.”
Saying that, Riona linked arms with me.
Don’t do stuff like this to me.. I’m just a normal guy, and if you do that, I will get the wrong idea.
“Good job on the play. Unlike Ryouya, I didn’t forget to say it.”
“Your words are kind of prickly, but thanks anyway. As you saw, Reona went off-script like crazy, so it was a bit of a disaster.”
“The moment you and Onee-chan kissed, the front rows of the audience totally broke into a commotion.”
I had a feeling there had been a stir, and it turned out I was right. Mio had said she’d be coming to watch, so I was almost certain she’d bring it up later too.
“So, where are we headed anyway?”
“We’re going to the Fortune-telling House run by the Occult Research Club.”
“Oh yeah, the cultural clubs are doing exhibitions too, huh?”
“They do the Fortune-telling House every year during the festival, and it has a reputation for being really accurate.”
I wasn’t the type to believe in fortune-telling, but if it had a reputation for being accurate, then I couldn’t help being curious. Actually, this was the first time I’d even heard of an Occult Research Club at our school.
Well, I’d skipped the club introduction event back in April of our first year, since I hadn’t planned on joining anything to begin with. So it made sense I wouldn’t know. Apparently, if you include the middle school division too, there were quite a few clubs in this school, but honestly, I didn’t even know what half of them were.

Chapter 115: In Return, I Expect You to Pay Me Back for the Plus I Sacrificed
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
I was lost in my own thoughts while walking whenI finally arrived at the area where the cultural clubs’ rooms were concentrated, together with Riona. There was one section that stood out clearly. The whole presentation was so loud, it was practically screaming for attention.
“Whoa, they’re really serious with the decoration, huh?”
“The Fortune-Telling Research Club puts a ton of effort into their exhibit for the school festival. Last year’s display was by far the best among all the cultural clubs.”
“Yeah, no surprise. You wouldn’t get this level of quality otherwise.”
The area in front of the clubroom was decorated in a style befitting a literal ‘Fortune-Telling Hall.’ Compared to the other cultural club exhibits, it was on a whole different level. Maybe that was why there was a line forming outside the room. Not only high school students but also kids in uniforms from the affiliated middle school were mixed in crowds. This place was seriously popular.
“Looks like we’ll have to wait a bit.”
“Then, want to talk about love while we wait?”
“P-Please spare me from that.”
I had developed a full-blown phobia thanks to all the times I’d been dragged into “love talk” sessions with Reona and Riona. Whenever I talked about romance with them, it felt like my personal values and beliefs were being twisted around. It was honestly terrifying.
“It wouldn’t be any fun without Onee-chan anyway, so I’ll let you off the hook this time.”
“I’d be even more grateful if you’d let me off the hook when Reona’s around too.”
“I’ll think about it.”
“Yeah no, that’s the kind of line people say when they have no intention of doing it.”
The two of us waited our turn while chatting like that. Students came out of the Fortune-Telling Research Club’s room wearing all kinds of expressions. Some were smiling, some looked disappointed, and some even looked like they were about to cry. I couldn’t help but wonder what on earth was going on inside.
As I chatted with Riona, the line moved steadily forward, and eventually, it was our turn. The moment we entered, we were greeted by a girl who looked like she had walked straight out of an RPG game and a crystal ball resting on the table. The interior of the clubroom was clearly put together with a lot of effort.
“You’re next. So, what would you like me to divine for you?”
“I want you to tell me about my and Ryouya’s future.”
“Got it. I’ll divine your near future. I’ll do both of you together.”
After hearing Riona’s request, the girl fixed her eyes on the crystal ball and began to concentrate. She stayed silent for a while, staring into it. Then, her expression suddenly changed to one of surprise—and for some reason, she looked at me with pity.
Huh? That reaction of hers is seriously unsettling.
“…I’ve seen your future clearly.”
“Please tell us the result.”
“Your future will go exactly the way you want it to. There’s not even a chance of failure anymore.”
The girl said this to Riona, then turned to me and spoke again.
“…As for you, I can only say this. My condolences.”
“Huh? What do you mean by that!?”
“If I had to give you any advice, it would be not to waste your energy resisting. After all, there’s no use in resisting. All the energy you poured into resisting will be for naught.”
No, no, what the hell does that mean? What exactly is going to happen to me in the near future? She said there’s no use in resisting—don’t tell me I’m going to get attacked by someone or something?
“That fortune-telling session was fun.”
“Maybe it was fun for you, Riona, but for me, it left the worst possible aftertaste. It wasn’t fun at all.”
Normally, I’m the type of person who doesn’t believe in fortune-telling at all. But after hearing something like that from a fortune-teller, even I couldn’t help but be a little shaken.
While Riona looked like she was in a great mood, I was feeling completely disturbed by the ominous foretelling.
“If you stay with someone like me who has a bright future, maybe even someone with a pitch-black future like you could be saved.”
“I see, so you’re going for a neutralizing effect—adding a plus and a minus together to make zero.”
“In return, I expect you to pay me back for the plus I sacrificed for you.”
“Wait, you’re seriously going to make me pay for that?”
“Of course. As the creditor, I’ll make sure to collect the debt properly from you, Ryouya.”
If Riona held a debt over me, who knew what kind of outrageous demands she’d make. Worst case, I might even end up worse off than before. While talking like that, Riona and I continued going around the school festival together. I had promised to stick with her for the whole morning, but since we hadn’t made any plans for the afternoon, I figured I’d take it easy after that.
At least, that’s what I thought.
In the end, Reona joined us in the afternoon and I ended up being dragged around even more than yesterday. Reona said something like, “You’re not busy anyway, right Ryouya-kun?” and I had no way to escape. Thanks to that, unlike last year when I didn’t go around the festival at all, this year I managed to completely conquer all the food stalls and cultural club exhibits.
