ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
The long preparation period finally came to an end, and the day of the school festival had arrived. After the opening ceremony in the gym, we basically followed the shifts assigned to us. Incidentally, second-year students were in charge of the theater performance, and since each class didn’t run a booth, we didn’t have any assigned shifts to begin with. That meant we had free time until it was our turn to perform.
“Alright, shall we start checking out the booths?”
“I’m curious to see which class is the most popular this year.”
“I bet the quality of the booths really depends on how motivated each class was.”
Reona, Riona, and I chatted like that as we began strolling through the school, now decorated in full festival mode. Last year, I had spent most of my time in the library outside of my shift, so this was practically my first time truly enjoying the school festival as a high schooler.
No, actually, I did something similar back in middle school too, so this might be my first time in life. I had really led a pretty miserable student life, hadn’t I? For now, we decided to visit the high school booths. When we arrived at the first-year classrooms hosting the booths, they were already packed with students.
Large signs on the classroom walls displayed the booth names in bold, so you could tell at a glance what each one was about. Well, the pamphlet we were given also listed what kind of booth each classroom had, but still.
“Ryouya, where do you and Onee-chan want to start with?”
“A maid café or haunted house are pretty easy to imagine from the names, but ‘Trick Room’ is kind of vague, so I’m actually more curious about that.”
“I was curious about that one too, so let’s go there. Looks like there aren’t too many people in line either.”
“Alright, that works for me too.”
Since we had decided on visiting the Trick Room first, we immediately went inside. What greeted us were illusionary visuals—trick art that made the floor look warped, and a hyper-realistic lion illustration that looked like it might leap out at us.
“So that’s what the ‘trick’ was… Trick art.”
“This is surprisingly well done. The floor really looks distorted.”
“The quality is insanely good.”
It was such high quality that it was hard to believe high school students had made it. I had no doubt that some wild professionals must’ve snuck into that class.
“Ryouya, lie face down in front of the lion for a second.”
“Like this?”
“Perfect, stay just like that.”
Prompted by Riona, I lay face down in front of the lion. Reona then excitedly began snapping photos. She was probably going to upload them to social media again, but I didn’t even feel like resisting anymore.
“Look, I got a photo where it looks like Ryouya-kun is about to get eaten by the lion!”
“Like he’s getting sucked right into its mouth.”
“It really looks like that’s what’s happening. It’s kind of amazing.”
“Okay, now take pictures of me and Riona too.”
We started taking pictures in front of all kinds of trick art. Aside from the floor and the lion, there were plenty of other illusions using visual misdirection, and we had a blast. After taking tons of photos and feeling satisfied, we decided to leave the classroom to visit the next booth—but that was when trouble hit.
“Whoa!?”
I had been walking without paying attention and completely lost my balance on the warped-looking floor. I stepped down expecting a height difference, but there wasn’t one, and that mismatch must’ve caused my brain to glitch. Luckily, just as I was about to fall, Reona caught me, so I avoided smashing into the floor. That said, the way her hand slid around my waist felt a little suggestive, which was kind of hard to ignore.
“That was a close one.”
“Thanks, seriously. You saved me.”
“No problem. It’s the prince’s job to rescue the princess, after all.”
“No, no. I’m only a princess in the play. I’m not a princess outside of the play.”
Reona spoke in the same princely tone as the character she played in our performance, and it was weirdly convincing coming from her. I was confident her cross-dressing prince persona would’ve been popular among certain demographics of people.

Chapter 111: I Know, Onii-chan Is Onii-chan After All
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After spending some time checking out the high school festival booths, we had now made our way to the middle school building. Naturally, the goal was to visit the middle school’s festival booths. Normally, this area was filled only with middle schoolers, but now there were quite a few high school students in uniform as well. They had probably come to check out the middle school booths too.
“Let’s start with Mio’s class.”
“Yeah, yeah, I heard you say that like five times already. I got it.”
“Ryouya is such a siscon.”
Reona and Riona gave me a flat, accusing look. But wanting to go see my cute little sister’s booth should be a completely normal feeling.
“By the way, what’s Mio-chan’s class doing again?”
“Ah, I think I heard from Mio that they’re doing a cosplay café.”
Apparently, they had originally planned to do a maid café, but some students felt it was unfair that only the girls had to do all the work, so they changed it to a cosplay café instead. As I was remembering that, I noticed the two girls looking suspiciously wary at me.
“Is it really safe to bring Ryouya-kun to a place like that?”
“He might get all worked up and lose control and try something bad.”
“Come on, I would never do something like that.”
I felt like they’d said something similar the last time I went to the middle school building to help Reona out.
Do I really come off as such a dangerous guy?
“Then we’ll just make sure to keep a close eye on Ryouya-kun so he won’t do anything bad.”
“That way we can feel safe.”
“Hey, this is seriously hard to walk like this, you know.”
Reona and Riona had locked arms with me on both sides, turning me into a complete spectacle. I was getting stares from all directions like, “What the hell is that guy doing?”
We entered Mio’s classroom in that ridiculous state, drawing even more attention. Even the girl who came to greet us looked a little taken aback, making me feel like I was undergoing some kind of punishment game. As I was thinking that, Mio showed up in a maid costume.
“Some of the boys were getting all excited about the harem guy showing up, so I wondered what kind of super hot guy it was gonna be… And it turns out it was just Onii-chan.”
“Hey Mio-chan, yoo-hoo~!”
“Ryouya said he wanted to come, so the three of us came to visit.”
“Just so you know, I didn’t choose to be in this situation because I wanted to.”
“I know. Onii-chan is Onii-chan after all.”
Mio hit me with that brutally cold line. Looks like even she was not going to go easy on me anymore. Well, if the roles were reversed, I’d probably be too embarrassed and pretend not to know the person too, so I couldn’t really blame her.
“Still, everyone’s wearing all sorts of cosplay, huh?”
“Yeah, we’ve got butlers, tokusatsu heroes… Basically the rule was that everyone could pick whatever costume they wanted.”
Looking around, there really didn’t seem to be any unifying theme. It was a complete mishmash.
I guess pretty much anything goes.
“Mio-chan’s maid outfit is super cute too.”
“Totally! I really want to make her our little sister.”
“Thank you, but I think the maid outfit would suit Reona-san and Riona-san much better.”
And as always, those two seemed to be plotting to make Mio their little sister. This was Reona and Riona we were talking about. Knowing them, they might actually pull it off.
After that, we spent some time enjoying the cosplay café. Our school’s festival had a strict no-cooking policy, so everything served was store-bought, but in a place like this, the atmosphere was what really mattered—so it wasn’t a problem.
Still, this was totally different from the school festival back when I was in middle school. To be honest, I didn’t remember ours being nearly this exciting. Being in an integrated middle and high school definitely made a huge difference.
“Alright, I think we’ve had our fill here. Let’s head to the next spot.”
“Yeah, what should we check out next?”
“Then I wanna go see the cultural club exhibits.”
Since both my class with Reona and Riona’s class were performing their plays tomorrow, we had today completely free. The three of us decided to spend the rest of the day wandering around the school festival and just taking it easy for today.
