ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After spending the night locked in the gym storage room, morning came and, in the blink of an eye, it was already after school—time for our theater rehearsal. That said, we still didn’t have the costumes or props ready, and since we were using a classroom, it was more of a light script read-through than an actual rehearsal.
With me playing the role of Snow White, Reona as the prince, Shirogane-san as the witch, and a few others as dwarves, we went through the script from start to finish while acting out the parts.
“Judging from that run-through just now, to be honest, my impression is that everyone except Reona-chan sounded way too much like they were just reading their lines. It was super jarring.”
Even though the main cast, including me, had been practicing at home, our evaluation from Mina Shiraishi-san, the class rep who had agreed to be the director, wasn’t exactly glowing. Well, Shiraishi-san was an active member of the drama club, so it was only natural for our first-ever full rehearsal to look weak in her eyes. Besides, this was just our first day of practice, so we all knew this kind of feedback was coming.
“Why is Reona the only one who’s so good at this? I thought I practiced a decent amount too.”
“Hm, maybe it’s just talent?”
“That smug face of yours is seriously irritating.”
Reona and Shirogane-san were having that kind of exchange in front of me. Despite the clash they had before summer break over the stolen wallet incident, it hadn’t led to any lasting bad blood between them. By the way, on the last day before summer break, Shirogane-san bowed her head and apologized to me. So that whole incident was already resolved, and there were no lingering hard feelings.
In fact, Shirogane-san was one of the few people in class who treated me normally, even though most classmates tried to avoid getting involved with me. That was probably due to some lingering guilt on her part.
“Anyway, now that I’ve seen where everyone’s at, I’m going to start drilling you all hard, so be ready for it.”
Shiraishi-san wore glasses and gave off a quiet, bookish vibe, so I’d assumed she was mild-mannered, but it turned out she had a surprisingly fiery side to her. After that, we continued rehearsing with a few breaks in between, and eventually wrapped up for the day. Since I played Snow White, one of the main roles, I got quite a bit of acting feedback and was completely worn out. As I was heading toward the shoe lockers with Reona, she spoke to me with a dissatisfied look on her face.
“Ryouya-kun, you were totally staring at Mina-chan just now, weren’t you?”
“What made you think like that?!”
“Well, you were making eye contact with her for more than five seconds while talking.”
Reona suddenly said something outrageous. Apparently, because I looked at Shiraishi-san’s face while listening to her feedback, she decided I was “entranced” by Shiraishi-san.
“Accusing me of falling for Shiraishi-san just because I stared at her for more than five seconds… Isn’t that a bit harsh?”
“For me, the limit is three seconds.”
“Then that means every time I talk to someone, I’d be ‘entranced’ by them?”
“Yeah, that’s why I’m worried. Ryouya-kun seems like he’d fall for someone way too easily.”
Well, not like I could deny that, since it was pretty much true. But what exactly was Reona so worried about?
“Could you explain what you’re worried about more clearly?”
“Actually, there’s a study that says if you stare into someone’s eyes for more than eight seconds, you’ll fall in love. I’m just saying this out of kindness because I don’t want to see you suffer from a hopeless love.”
“Wait, wait, you’re totally assuming I’ll be rejected. But maybe, just maybe, it won’t be a hopeless love, you know?”
“Don’t tell me… Ryouya-kun, is there someone you want your love to work out with?”
“I see. Ryouya, can you tell us more in great detail about that?”
Suddenly, I was grabbed firmly by the shoulders—by Reona and Riona, who at some point had appeared by my side. They gripped me so tightly from both sides that I thought their nails might dig into my skin—it hurt. To prevent this situation from getting any worse, I decided to clarify things.
“N-No, that was just a hypothetical, like what if something like that happened. There’s no specific person I’m talking about.”
“Oh, so it was hypothetical.”
“Don’t scare us like that.”
It seemed that explanation was enough to calm the two of them down. Finally, my shoulders stopped hurting. What a relief. And lately, I really had to be more careful not to let careless words slip out. At this rate, my body wouldn’t hold up much longer.
“Well, I still think the chances of Ryouya-kun’s love working out are basically zero.”
“Out of 3.5 billion girls in the world, maybe two would go out with Ryouya.”
“Out of 3.5 billion, just two? That’s basically zero!”
Reona and Riona continued to fire off merciless verbal attacks at me, as usual. Besides, where the hell did they even get that “two” from? When I asked, all they said was that I’d understand someday—but they wouldn’t tell me anything more.
