Chapter 50: Let’s Make a Promise with Aria-san!
“What are you doing?”
As I explored the wilderness, I came across a silver-haired girl casting fire magic at the lake. Curious, I asked her what she was doing, and she cheerfully responded.
“Hmm? Oh, it’s training! Training to get stronger!”
“Training…?”
“Yeah! It’s practice to become stronger!”
“Practice…”
“Do you want to join? I’ve been training alone for so long, it’d be nice to have someone to train with.”
“Is training fun?”
“I don’t know if it’s fun, but… if you ever have someone important to you, it’ll help you protect them.”
“That sounds cool! I’ll do it!”
“You’re so honest and cute. What’s your name?”
“Adin Almarx!”
“Adin-kun, huh… My name is A—”
Before the girl could say her name, the world shifted, and I found myself staring at the familiar view from my bed. As I sat up, I muttered:
“Aria-san!”
“I’m right here. What’s wrong? Did you have a bad dream?”
Aria-san, who had been reading a book, closed it and came over to my bed, looking worried. She gently hugged me from behind. The dream I had was about my past… with that silver-haired girl.
“It wasn’t a bad dream. It was just a memory from the past. Would you mind if I told you a little story from my past?”
“Of course, go ahead,” Aria-san said kindly, her voice soft and encouraging.
“Back when I was younger, I made a promise with a silver-haired girl. We promised to get stronger together and become adventurers who could fight side by side.”
“Mhmm.”
“But we ended up being separated less than a year after that. She disappeared, and I haven’t seen her since. That dream brought back those memories.”
“…Is this the same girl you told me about before? The one you had feelings for, the one who was really good at magic?”
“Yes, that’s her.”
When I answered, Aria-san’s embrace tightened slightly as she spoke.
“And how do you feel about that girl who disappeared less than a year after you met her?”
“I’m grateful to her. She’s the one who gave me my dream.”
“…!”
Aria-san hugged me even tighter.
“Aria-san…?”
I was worried about her reaction and called out her name, but still holding me, she spoke,
“Adin-kun, how about we go on a quest together tomorrow?”
“…What?! A quest?!”
Though I’d heard that Aria-san had started to change her mind about things, I was still surprised to hear the word “quest” come out of her mouth.
But Aria-san remained calm and explained.
“Yes, a quest. If we clear tomorrow’s quest, there are two things I want to tell you.”
“Two things you want to tell me?”
“That’s right, but…”
Aria-san turned to face me, hugging me even more tightly as she continued.
“Please, don’t hate me… if we ever get separated again, I…”
Her voice trembled, but I felt the need to reassure her with my honest feelings.
“I could never hate you, Aria-san… Let’s clear tomorrow’s quest together, and make it the best day ever.”
“Yes… it’s a promise.”
“Absolutely.”
After that, Aria-san and I spent some time holding each other in silence.
Tomorrow, something between us might change—perhaps in a big way—but I don’t know exactly how. Even so, I’m certain of one thing: I’ll never let Aria-san go, and I want to continue supporting her from now on.
I made a firm decision to make tomorrow the best day by clearing our first quest together and hearing those two important things Aria-san wanted to tell me. With that in mind, I prepared myself for the day to come.
