Chapter 10: The Hero of [Resurrection] Brings Back the Dead
After we finished wiping out the Kingdom soldiers—
An elderly beastman, who seemed to be the village chief, approached us.
“Strangers, you have our deepest thanks.”
He bowed low.
He must have noticed the color of our eyes and realized we were heroes.
But the way he deliberately called us “strangers” showed he was being careful with his words.
“…We just happened to be passing by. Don’t worry about it.”
“That will not do. Our village is poor, and we cannot offer much, but please accept this.”
“…This is—”
The chief handed me a pouch filled with money.
“I can’t take this. Use it to rebuild the village instead.”
“Please, I insist.”
“No, really—I didn’t help you because I wanted a reward.”
“Come now, at least take it for appearances’ sake.”
“No, I mean it!! Stop pushing!!”
As the chief and I went back and forth about the money, a commotion broke out in the village square.
Wondering what had happened, I went to take a look.
“Mom!! Mom, wake up!!”
“Fey… your mother is already…”
“No!! No, no!! Mom!! Mom!!”
There, a young girl clung to her mother’s lifeless body, sobbing uncontrollably.
It seemed the soldiers had killed her.
“May I?”
“No!! Don’t let a human touch my mom!!”
“Fey! That’s enough! Forgive her, traveler…”
“Why are you apologizing, Chief!? It was humans who killed my mom!!”
“The ones who killed her and these people here are not the same. Understand that.”
“Uuuh… uwaaahhh!!”
To a child, there was no difference between me and the Kingdom soldiers.
It was no different from when I had hated the monsters that destroyed my hometown, and then directed that same hatred at a completely unrelated Demon Lord.
That thought made my chest ache as I watched the girl sobbing over her mother’s body.
“Fey, don’t cry. I’ll bring your mom back.”
“Eh…?”
Taking advantage of her confusion, I touched the mother’s body.
“[Resurrection].”
“““““Eh!?”””””
A soft glow spread across the corpse, and her body jolted.
Slowly… the woman opened her eyes.
“Huh? W-What happened to me…?”
“M-Mom!? Mom!!”
“Fey!?”
“Mom!! Mom, Mom!!”
The girl threw herself into her mother’s arms, bawling as she clung tight.
“Thank you, big brother!! Thank you for bringing my mom back!!”
“…You’re welcome. If there are others who were killed, bring them to me. I’ll resurrect them all.”
My words made the beastmen snap to attention.
In a hurry, they gathered all those who had been slain by the Kingdom soldiers into the village square.
I resurrected every single one of them.
The beastmen rejoiced as their kin returned to life, showering me with words of gratitude.
“Big brother, you’re amazing!! Can you bring anyone back to life!?”
“Hmm, not anyone.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. My power only works on people who haven’t had a funeral yet.”
“Heeey, I see!!”
[Resurrection] might have seemed like a godlike power, but it came with conditions.
The biggest was the soul.
A soul lingered in the body until it was properly buried, and the living—family, friends, loved ones—prayed for its peace. Only then would it return to the goddess in the heavens.
And once the soul was gone, no resurrection was possible.
“So there’s a catch to your power, big brother…”
“Meaning, if we had been buried properly, you couldn’t have revived us.”
“That’s right.”
If the Ixion Kingdom had truly honored the heroes they betrayed and given them heartfelt funerals, then I never would have been able to leave the abyss.
“Tonight, we feast!! And you, hero—cough—traveler, you must join us!!”
“Eh? Uh, well, we…”
“To let our saviors leave without proper thanks after such a blessing—that would be an eternal shame upon our cat tribe!! We couldn’t even face our ancestor, the Hero of [Cat]!!”
“““Pfft—!!”””
“W-What’s so funny!?”
The unexpected word made Silesta, Zona, and me burst out laughing.
The only one not laughing was Meimei, who turned bright red and huffed with a tsun-tsun attitude.
It wasn’t strange, though.
She had been falsely accused and cast into the abyss—
But even if it couldn’t be made public, it wasn’t surprising that her great deeds had quietly been passed down through whispers of history.
Still, the chief’s invitation caught me off guard.
I felt a little bad for Imuru, Tiara, and the others waiting back in the abyss, but… this was our first chance to enjoy real food on the surface.
“Tonight’s feast is red boar we hunted recently. We were going to salt it down for winter storage, but we can always hunt another! Tonight, we’ll go all out!!”
The chief proudly brought out a whole roasted boar monster.
The skin was roasted until perfectly crispy, and the mouthwatering aroma of meat filled the air, making my stomach rumble.
Even Silesta and Meimei were drooling.
“Mm, Mister, look!! It smells sooo good!!”
“Compared to that bug meat we ate in the abyss, this is like heaven!!”
“Yes!! Let’s dig in right away!!”
“The King’s portion shall be served by me.”
And so, we all dove into the beastmen’s feast.
…Wait a second.
“Juices keep spilling out…!! Mister, this is so good!!”
“It feels kind of nostalgic, somehow.”
“Hmm… this wasn’t just roasted. They must’ve mixed in a blend of herbs to cut down the gamey smell.”
While Silesta and the others enjoyed the feast, I took another bite.
…Yeah, nothing.
No matter how much I chewed, I couldn’t taste a thing.
Judging by everyone else’s reactions, the red boar meat really was delicious. The beastmen had gone all out.
But to me, it was like chewing air.
Had eating abyss monster meat for so long wrecked my taste buds completely?
“My King, is something wrong?”
“Ah, no, nothing at all. It’s delicious.”
I forced a smile and finished the tasteless boar meat.
Then it hit me.
“Chief, there’s something I want to ask.”
“I apologize, but preparing the next serving of meat will take a little time…”
“I wasn’t asking for seconds!!”
I leaned forward, speaking seriously.
“The soldiers who attacked this village—they were from Ixion Kingdom.”
“Yes. With those insignias on their armor and helmets, there can be no mistake.”
“Do you know why they came here?”
“…Come with me.”
The chief’s tone shifted. He led me to the edge of the village, toward a small hut.
It was a little dusty, but well-maintained.
Probably a storage shed.
“A few days ago, a strangely dressed girl escaped from Ixion Kingdom. We’ve been hiding her here.”
“A strangely dressed girl?”
“Yes. She claims she came from another world.”
The chief opened the hut’s door. Inside was a small bed.
Lying on it was a girl with sleek, long black hair tied into a ponytail, her face strikingly beautiful.
Her clothes were a little dirty from the road, but the material was unmistakably high-class, like something nobles would wear.
The skirt, however, was absurdly short.
“…Another world?”
Her name is Yukari Shizukuishi. According to her, she’s an isekai traveler.”
An isekai girl…?

[Afterword]
A Random Tidbit
Shizukuishi’s… well, let’s just say she’s big. When she stands behind the short Meimei, it rests right on top of her head.
For reference, Zona’s also reach about the same height.
If that mental image made you go “Eh!?” then toss a ★ to boost the author’s motivation.
And if you thought, “[Resurrection] is way too OP,” “That flavorless meat detail feels ominous…” or “Oh, so this is where Shizukuishi shows up!!” —then don’t forget to leave a comment, bookmark, ★rating, or review!
