“Ittou-kun! I’ll burn the Blue Serpents behind those two! Go get to them while I’m at it!”
“R-right!”
As expected of Kanbara-san…
Unaware of the loose, confident smile on Kanna’s face, Ittou was impressed by her quick judgment and commands. While he had charged in recklessly, focused only on driving off the Blue Serpents to save Katagiri and Unohana, Kanna had calmly observed his movement. She thought through how she should act in response, and immediately decided what orders to give him.
Ittou had experience rescuing people back in his rural hometown, but he had almost always worked alone. He was not used to teamwork, nor to directing others. Since coming to the city, he had felt that weakness acutely, especially after facing several situations where his classmates’ lives had been in danger. Each time, his sense of urgency about his lack of coordination only grew stronger.
What should I do…?
But the answer did not come to him. No, it couldn’t come to him. Before he could sink deeper into thought, the metallic, scraping chorus of the Blue Serpents’ cries yanked him back into reality.
“SSSSHHIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!”
Startled by the sudden attack from a strong enemy, the nearby Blue Serpents let out warning cries. Their voices spread like waves, prompting every blue snake in the vicinity to begin shrieking. The sound wasn’t painful enough to cover one’s ears, but—
“W-what is that!?”
“Ehhh—”
“Hiiiii! My ears…! My head…!”
The mass of Blue Serpents suddenly hissing at once threw Royama, Noshiro, and Danbara—each isolated from the group—into confusion and fear. For Danbara, whose senses were especially heightened, the sound seemed unbearable. Her face twisted in pain.
They had managed to save two people, but now the other three were in danger. Grimacing at the unpleasant noise, Ittou followed Kanna’s instructions and ran toward Unohana and Katagiri. Unohana stood there in a daze, staring blankly in the direction Kanna had gone, while Katagiri was trembling. Her head was darting frantically between the snakes that had suddenly started screaming.
“U-Unohana-san! Katagiri-san! Are you okay!?”
When Ittou called out to them, both girls turned toward his voice. Both of them were startled, but their replies were faint and weak.
“Ah… Uuh, yeah…”
“I… Itsukushima-kun…”
Their faces were pale as sheets. Their knees trembling so badly they could barely stand despite the ongoing battle around them.
“A-are you really okay?”
Ittou asked again, concern laced in his voice. Unohana looked up at him with wavering eyes, then clutched her head and hung it low, as if she was overwhelmed. Beside her, Katagiri looked at Unohana. Her face flashing with realization before she answered. She was still pale, but she was composed enough to speak.
“Y-you should help Noshiro-san and the others first…!”
“Yeah! I’ll go right away!”
Confirming that the two weren’t seriously hurt, Ittou turned to look at Noshiro’s group. The situation had clearly worsened since the last time he checked. Perhaps their spirits had been broken by the Blue Serpents’ eerie chorus.
“Damn it… This is bad!”
Noshiro was completely entangled, her body wrapped up by the snakes. She was struggling in vain to break free. Danbara was bleeding from her arm but still desperately dodging attacks, though panic was written all over her face.
Royama, the farthest away, had noticed the others’ danger but couldn’t advance at all. She was held back by the swarm of snakes around her. Her expression was tight with frustration as she swung her spear wildly.bEach of them was fighting in a different location, and Ittou froze. He was unsure who to help first.
The closest is Noshiro-san…! But Danbara-san’s the one who’s injured…! Meanwhile Royama-san is outnumbered! Who do I save first!?
Frowning deeply, Ittou’s eyes darted back and forth. Just then, he sensed something behind him and began to turn around when a faint scent, like soap, drifted past his nose. A small face flashed in the corner of his vision, and he quickly looked forward again in surprise.
“U-U-Unohana-san!?”
Perhaps from her earlier fighting, Unohana’s skin radiated a subtle warmth— and she was suddenly right there, so close their faces almost touched. Even though it was an inappropriate thought for the situation, Ittou couldn’t help but blush. Unohana leaned in even closer, until her lips were at his ear.
“…sniffle… In this situation, Noshiro’s the only right choice, dumbass.”
“…Huh?”
Ittou blinked, uncertain whether the voice he’d heard really belonged to Unohana. The cute, timid girl who’d been teary-eyed moments ago had just called him a “dumbass”? It didn’t fit her image at all. And yet—it had been her voice, unmistakably so, even if the tone was oddly different.
Glancing sideways, Ittou caught a glimpse of Unohana’s face. She still had tears in her eyes, yes—but the look in them was entirely different. She had the sharp, glinting gaze of a predator and she was openly glaring at the Blue Serpents with a dangerous, hungry smile.
