“Sniff… Hey. Listen up.”
But even as he tried to make sense of what was happening, Unohana’s whispering voice pressed right against his ear.
“Don’t just stand there all dazed. We really are grateful you saved us, you know. Thanks. ‘This girl’ will thank you as much as you want later, so for now, could you hurry up and help Noshiro and the others?”
“Eh? Eh? Eh?”
Up until now, whenever Ittou tried talking to Unohana, she would only shrink back and hide. He’d only ever heard her speak when talking to classmates or teachers, and even then, her voice had been so quiet it was barely audible. So hearing her voice clearly, right next to his ear like this, made him realize—so this is what her voice sounds like.
But having that voice suddenly pour directly into his ear all at once left Ittou’s eyes darting in confusion. However, his confusion didn’t end there. From the opposite side of his head, another presence drew close to his ear—carrying with it the faint scent of flowers.
“Itsukushima-kun…”
“Ka–Katagiri-san!?”
Katagiri came up to the other side and whispered into Ittou’s other ear. If Unohana’s voice was “The Cute Type,” Katagiri’s was quiet and gentle. The softness of that whisper sent a small shiver through Ittou’s body.
He now had two girls whispering into his ears from both sides. His brain began to short-circuit, but he somehow forced himself to think. After all, he had to deal with this situation.
(Like hell I can concentrate like this!! What is this situation!? Why is Katagiri-san here too!? And she smells so good! Crap, she’ll think I’m a creep! I need to hold my breath!)
Unaware of Ittou’s turmoil, Katagiri continued whispering softly into his ear.
“Um, I know everything’s confusing right now, but for the moment… Could you try trusting what the current Unohana-san is saying and act on it?”
“G–Got it!”
Katagiri had probably chosen to whisper because her small voice couldn’t compete with the roaring chorus of blue snakes, but the soft way it resonated within the little wall of her hands, the way it brushed his ear, and the faint scent rising from the heat of her body… All of it made Ittou feel itchy, restless, and like he was doing something terribly improper.
(U, uwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!)
But he had to endure it. He couldn’t let them realize he was getting strangely excited in a situation like this. He clenched his face muscles and focused on his left ear, to be precise, on Unohana’s voice.
“Listen up. Listen carefully. First—”
Despite her soft, girlish tone, there was a hint of venom in her speech that stuck out to Ittou, but only for a moment. The more he listened, the more his expression hardened into seriousness. By the time Unohana pulled away from his ear, he had switched fully into battle mode.
Suuuuuuuu—haaaaaaaa—
“All right! Got it! Thanks!”
Ittou quickly scanned the battlefield, spotted the “girl” Unohana had mentioned, and shouted loudly enough to compete with the blue snakes’ chorus.
“Kanbara-san!”
“Ittou-kun!?”
Among all of them, Kanna alone had kept fighting without losing focus to the blue snakes’ maddening chant, holding her ground near Katagiri and Unohana. When she heard Ittou’s voice, she smacked away a charred blue snake that came flying at her with her massive shield and turned half her face toward him.
“Kanbara-san! Charge at Noshiro-san!”
“…! Got it!”
Kanna’s face showed a flicker of confusion, but she quickly returned to a determined, valiant look, raised her shield, and dashed straight toward Noshiro. As she ran, she cast lightning magic again, enveloping her shield in electricity. With crackling sparks bursting around her, Kanna shouted as she closed the distance.
“Noshiro-san! I’m coming in! Brace yourself!”
“……!! G–Got it—aaaaaaahhhh!!!”
“Noshiro might talk slow, but her mind works fast. She reacts quickly to what others do and adjusts on the fly. Though… With that tall, curvy body of hers, her movements are a little slow.”
Unohana muttered quietly into Ittou’s left ear. Ittou nodded nervously, watching as the distance between Kanna and Noshiro closed. Just as Unohana had said, Noshiro seemed to instantly understand Kanna’s intent. Even while entangled by countless blue snakes, she sank her hips down and activated a body enhancement spell.
Seeing that, Kanna tightened her grip on her shield and accelerated even further. Just before colliding with Noshiro, she too stomped the ground and lowered her stance.
“Shield… BAAAASH!”
A shield was a defensive weapon, something meant to block attacks. But it could be used offensively too. One such move was the Shield Bash: thrusting or charging with the shield to blow the enemy away. It lacked the lethal power of a sword or spear, but in this situation, that was exactly what they needed.
Kanna drove her lightning-clad shield forward, crushing the snakes clinging to Noshiro’s back.
“Nggh… nngiiiihhhh—!”
The impact made Noshiro momentarily lose her breath, but as soon as Kanna stopped, she exhaled sharply, steadied her footing, and twisted her body hard. Kanna, taking the cue, jumped backward.
“U… AAAAAAAHHHH!!”
Noshiro swung her twisted torso back with all her strength, flinging off the blue snakes whose grip had weakened from the lightning shocks. The airborne snakes were then sliced and burned away by Kanna’s blade, her strikes infused with thunderous magic. Their numbers dropped rapidly.
The few that Noshiro couldn’t shake off, she ripped off by sheer force and hurled aside. Her body still tingled slightly from the lightning’s aftereffects, but the sensation faded bit by bit. She flexed her hands open and closed several times, confirming her strength had returned. Once she was satisfied, she clenched her fists and looked up.
Before her stood Kanna, her black ponytail swaying. Kanna was also catching her breath, trying to stabilize the magic that had gone wild during the burst. When she noticed Noshiro’s gaze, she called out.
“You okay!? Noshiro-san!”
“A–ah, y–yeah~ I’m sturdy, so I’m fine~ Thanks~, Kanbara-san~”
“Good! I’m glad! Oh right, Ittou-kun…?”
When Kanna turned around, Ittou was running toward them while carrying two small girls in his arms, both of whom would rank among the smallest in the class if they lined up by height. Seeing the two of them whispering into his ears as he ran, Kanna’s eyes went wide.
“Eh…? What even is that situation?”
Kanna looked bewildered, while Ittou gave a strained, sweat-soaked laugh.
“Oi, Ittou. Next is Daria. Move fast. You can handle it, right? Don’t dawdle. Go.”
“Th-that’s amazing. As expected of Itsukushima-kun. Such a clear, commanding voice. You sound so cool.”
From the left came the cute, small-animal-like voice full of insults, and from the right came a graceful, overly-polite voice brimming with praise. And above all, the sensation of the two small bottoms perched on his arms was enough to completely shatter the emotional balance of a boy in the middle of puberty.
(Uwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!! P–please, somebody free meeeeeeeeeee!!!)
