ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Where did they come from… This many Blue Serpents, we couldn’t possibly have missed them…!
Ittou shuddered as he stared at the sea of glittering, cold blue scales before his eyes. It had taken him a long time to get here, cutting down countless Blue Serpents along the way. But now, an equal number—or perhaps even more—were attacking Unohana and the rest of Team H.
To make things worse, aside from the pair closest to Ittou—Unohana and Katagiri—the rest of Team H had been completely separated, each surrounded by Blue Serpents. Individually speaking, the creatures weren’t that strong, so they wouldn’t be easily defeated… But only if one fought in perfect condition.
Once their stamina or mana ran out, their strength would fade, and they would be overwhelmed and torn apart in an instant.
I have to hurry…! I have to help them, fast!
“…! Ah, Ittou-kun!”
Kanna called out as Ittou suddenly dashed forward, but he didn’t stop. He crackled with the lightning mana Kanna had given him, enhancing his physical abilities, and sprinted straight toward Unohana and Katagiri.
I need to get them away from the Blue Serpents somehow…! Ah! That’s it!
Having thought of something, Ittou thrust his hand into his magic bag and pulled out a probing rod. Gripping it tightly, he took a stance like a javelin thrower and—
“Both of you—get back!!!”
“Ah, Itsuku-…!! Katari-chan!”
Katagiri froze in surprise at Ittou’s sudden arrival, but Unohana’s sharp cry snapped her back, and the two of them leapt backward together. Blocking the Blue Serpents that lunged to pursue them was the search rod, which struck the ground with a heavy crash, cracking the earth.
Ittou didn’t miss the momentary confusion of the serpents startled by the sudden attack.
“Uwaaaaaaahhh!”
With a loud yell, Ittou swung his extended black longsword—nearly a meter in length—in a wide, sweeping arc. The heavy strike, which let out a low whoosh as it cut the air, was aimed for maximum range and sent a mass of serpents flying. But the cost was great.
The force of the swing twisted his body like a wrung towel, leaving Ittou momentarily wide open. The serpents that had survived the blow—or had been lucky enough to avoid it—lunged at him all at once.
“Ittou-kun!!”
Katagiri’s pale face screamed in horror, only to be drowned out by the crash of thunder.
“【Lightning】!”
Ittou waited until the serpents were nearly upon him. The serpents were aiming for his exposed arms and torso and right at the last moment, Ittou released Kanna’s mana from every pore of his body.
Yellow lightning crackled violently around him, snapping and sparking as it ran over his skin.
The serpents that lunged at him were scorched by the lightning, their eerie blue glow fading as they turned to blackened husks and dropped lifelessly to the ground.
“A-Amazing…”
Through the glint of her glasses, Katagiri watched the sight unfold as if she was witnessing something out of a legend. A man wreathed in golden lightning swung his sword, cutting down the blue serpents… It looked like a warrior’s ritual dance from an ancient record, and Katagiri could do nothing but watch in awe.
But that dance couldn’t last forever. No matter how strong Ittou’s body was, he couldn’t keep attacking at full power for long.
“Guh—haaahhhh…!”
Unable to hold out, Ittou bent double, gasping for breath. The enraged serpents surged toward him again in second and third waves. He drew a deep breath, forcing air into his lungs, and looked up—only to find the gaping purple maws of the serpents right before him.
Eyes wide, Ittou froze, unable to think of any move to make, but before the purple and blue wave reached him, a voice called out.
“Ittou-kun! 『Step on it』!”
At that firm, clear voice from behind him, Ittou instinctively bent his knees and twisted his body, leaping backward.
-!! What…? My body suddenly feels light…
For a moment, he felt as if something soft and silken—like white thread—had wrapped around him, and the exhaustion in his body vanished all at once for some unknown reason. But before he could question it, Ittou found his foot standing on top of a big shield.
Kanna, braced beneath it, had her knees bent and her body radiating mana, holding the shield angled upward. The steadiness she projected was as firm as the ground itself, and Ittou couldn’t help but smile. Using her shield as a springboard, he pushed off and soared high into the air.
The serpents chasing him lost sight of him in an instant, seeing only the massive shield appear before them, but unable to stop their charge.
“【Lightning Wall】!!”
At Kanna’s shout, the great shield blazed with yellow mana, spreading outward in a glowing field nearly two meters wide. The serpents slammed into the wall one after another, not burned as completely as by Ittou’s lightning, but still charred and dropping to the ground one by one.
“Not yet—not yet!!”
Still gripping her shield, Kanna stomped forward with strength, each step pressing against the earth as she advanced. The wall of lightning burned through the Blue Serpents in front of her, but the four-meter-wide barrier couldn’t hold them all back. Some serpents slipped around the sides and lunged for her flank.
“…! Ittou-kun!”
Hearing her voice, Ittou vaulted over the shield, catching sight of her and the serpents from above. Landing behind Kanna, he steadied his breathing, then struck sharply. His sword pierced through the heads of the serpents with flawless precision. Together, they cut down every last serpent that had been attacking Unohana’s group.
“As expected of Kanbara-san! Thanks!”
As the leader of Team A, Kanna stood at the front lines, taking the enemy’s attacks head-on.
But she didn’t just defend. She controlled the flow of battle through aggro management and tactical positioning while directing her allies behind her.
Her wide field of vision, sharp intellect, and unshakable composure made her an exceptional leader, and Ittou voiced his praise while leaning lightly against her back in camaraderie. He offered a playful, “Nice work,” in the form of friendly contact.
However….
“F-Fnyaaah…! E-Eheheheee… Ittouuuu-kun’s… baaack…”
Ittou didn’t see it. He didn’t see the face of the top-class honor student—the same one labeled a “closet pervert” by the Marin–Manao sisters—had melted into pure bliss. Her vision narrowing until all she could see were the contours of his shoulder blades. He didn’t see her flushed face as she inhaled his scent in a dazed frenzy and her mind was instantly dyed a brilliant shade of pink.
