Chapter 26 Let’s evacuate
Other members of the medical association took Mitoka into custody.
Rishlu-san offered to accompany me to his house, saying he wanted to inform Miarella and then hear what I had to say.
“Rishlu, I’ll come along too. Is that okay?”
“Of course. It’s a rule that minors must be accompanied by a guardian.”
I thought I had gotten used to it, but it still felt quietly unsettling…
“That guy Ganzel… What’s the deal with him? He tried to run away, didn’t he?”
“He must have been up to something shady. Complaints have been filed against him by others besides Lombard.”
“Do you think he had some ulterior motive for getting close to Mitoka and the others?”
“When I asked him about that… he just ran away.”
Ah… it reminded me of those small time henchmen in detective stories, always resorting to futile struggles.
We headed towards the Medical Association and the Mage Guild, leaving our homes and starting to walk.
At that moment…
A magical beast intruded!
Three horned wolves!
As shouts filled the air, all the doors of houses and shops simultaneously slammed shut.
People on the streets hurriedly sought refuge nearby.
“Open up! They haven’t arrived yet!”
“I’ll open it. Move!”
Some shopkeepers reopened doors they had just closed, letting people on the street inside.
On the inside of the outward-opening doors, we could see something like reinforced metal panels.
If those were there, it meant that when the doors were opened, the beasts couldn’t break through.
We too hurriedly returned to the dining hall and closed the door.
Sure enough, the dining hall’s door also had a metal panel similar to a reinforced stopper.
Come to think of it, I had always wondered about those lower inner attachments on either side of the entrance.
With preparations like these, there was nothing to worry about.
I had been contemplating such matters nonchalantly when in the distance, we heard screams.
“Darn, someone’s been left behind?”
“It’s dangerous to go out now. Without knowing where they are, we might be ambushed from behind.”
“Could they enter this place?”
“Inside is probably safe, but… we can’t move until the guards or hunters take care of them.”
As a precaution, the three customers in the shop and all of us went upstairs.
Even the staircase had a cover.
The possibility of them getting inside wasn’t zero…
For such an eventuality, I had attached a piece of paper to the stair cover with the words “Physical Attack Immunity” and “Poison Immunity.”
“What’s that?”
“It’s a protective charm from my hometown… or more like, a kind of superstition.”
“…I’ve never seen those characters before. Is it from Takuto-kun’s hometown?”
“Yes. Well, it’s more of a psychological comfort.”
I skillfully dodged the questions from the customers.
I couldn’t exactly say, “This is magic,” after all.
And just when I thought that maybe everyone should have one for themselves…
Very close by, we heard what seemed like someone running in distress.
“That voice… it’s Ganzel!”
“No way, did he try to escape to the surface by opening the portal gate?”
“It’s possible. What a reckless act…”
Rishlu-san voice sounded angry.
Of course, it would be.
Looking around from the second-floor window, I spotted someone running from a lone horned wolf.
“Horned wolves aren’t particularly fast, so they can be shaken off by taking sharp turns…”
That’s right, even I managed to escape with my own legs.
“No, he’s running straight in fear.”
“Ganzel-san, over here!”
“…Mitoka!”
Did he manage to escape?
I could see them trying to guide Ganzel towards the alley visible from our second floor.
However, it seemed like Ganzel’s legs were tangled, preventing him from running smoothly.
“No, he’s catching up!”
The horned wolf lunged.
“Get down! Lower your head!”
Gaihack-san’s voice echoed.
They somehow managed to evade the attack.
I thought they would continue down the alley, but instead, they hastily emerged onto the main street.
From behind the alley, another wolf appeared.
“Get down! Horned wolves leap at taller targets!”
Mitoka attempted to heed Gaihack-san’s warning and get down, but Ganzel lifted him up by the collar.
Mitoka screamed, and blood sprayed.
“That guy… he’s using Mitoka as a shield!”
Chapter 27 Why did my body move?
I’ve never considered myself particularly driven by a sense of justice. Heroes like police officers or firefighters have never been my role models. I tend to lean more towards the type who tries to avoid trouble whenever possible.
However, the moment Ganzel used Mitoka as a shield, my body was already leaping out of the second-floor window. From above, I could hear Gaihack-san’s yelling.
There was a slight jolt as my feet hit the ground, but otherwise, I was fine.
It was reckless.
I knew that.
But my body acted on its own, so there was no helping it.
Ganzel… seemed to have fled in the direction he had come from.
Leaving Mitoka behind…
Between Mitoka and me, there was one horned wolf, and another behind Mitoka. Since Mitoka was down, I was likely their target.
Stay calm.
Don’t divert your gaze.
Slowly, I shifted my body so that the two wolves overlapped in my line of sight.
I had also included the “Physical Attack Immunity” and “Poison Immunity” in my collection. Probably, even if I were to take a hit, it wouldn’t be fatal.
I never thought I’d end up testing those “shaman-like talismans” I made back then in a situation like this.
“Collection, Glyph Magic.”
I whispered as I opened the screen.
I took out the folded talisman I had stored inside the collection and unfolded it.
It was reassuring to see through to the other side from the screen.
The wolves crouched!
They pounced!
“Lance!”
Pointing at the two overlapping horned wolves, an incredibly fast spear of flames shot in their direction.
Darn it, I barely grazed one of them!
The other one seemed to have the spear lodged in its mouth.
Just barely evading their attacks, I pointed my finger again.
“Scatter shot!”
Bullets of fire assaulted the horned wolves, managing to immobilize them somehow.
Before confirming the wolves’ fate, I rushed over to Mitoka.
Mitoka was limp and motionless, but he was still breathing.
Before everyone rushed over, I decided to administer the antidote. Even if they ran towards me from behind the dining hall, they wouldn’t be able to see me as I took out a piece of paper and my pen from my collection.
The paper I grabbed was about the size of a postcard, so I quickly wrote “Antidote” and “Healing” in two lines. Right, if it’s just the internal organs and muscles, surface wounds should be fine as they weren’t as deep as I initially thought. Oh, it would be bad if there were nerve damage.
With approaching footsteps making me anxious, I continued after “Healing” with “…limited to internal organs, muscles, and the nervous system,” and applied it to Mitoka’s wounds.
There was a faint sensation as if the air was moving, and the poison seemed to vanish, leaving no trace of decay.
After confirming that Mitoka’s complexion had improved slightly, I stuffed the paper into my pocket and turned around.
It seemed like the two fiery weapons I had unleashed had incinerated the horned wolves. And before everyone had reached us, the guards who had taken down the other horned wolf also arrived.
“You fool! What a reckless thing to do!”
…I was scolded.
A fist was swung down with all their might.
I pretended it hurt, but thanks to “Physical Attack Immunity,” it didn’t hurt at all.
“Yeah, that’s right! I just suddenly dashed out like that! It was really reckless!”
“Coming from the second floor, that’s insane!”
Even the customers scolded me…
But Miarella hugged me tightly and started crying.
Honestly, this was the hardest part…
“I’m sorry…”
But I really don’t know why I did something like that…
Youthful indiscretion, perhaps?
Maybe my youthful passion got the better of me?
“To be honest, I’m surprised… at your age, to be able to use magic like that,” Rishlu’s voice carried a hint of seriousness.
I probably messed up big time.
“We’ll talk about it later, with Gaihack-san and the others.”
“Yeah, you better. Being able to do something like that is the mark of a seasoned magic knight.”
…Oh boy…
