Chapter 24 Let’s go shopping for materials
Today, Gaihack took me along when he went to buy materials for repairs.
The shops for materials are mostly located on the north side, near the blue forest and the rusty mountains, while the south-western side, near the White Forest, houses shops that sell various other items.
Today’s shopping was for ores and metals, so we visited the shops on the north side. It was my first time coming here, so I was looking forward to seeing what kinds of stores they had.
Each shop specializes in different materials, making it feel like a collection of specialty stores. While it’s convenient to have everything under one roof, I also enjoy exploring these specialized shops.
I even came across a shop that sold pigments and paints, which are used by grinding stones and mixing them with oil.
I actually tried using those paints for my calligraphy, but they didn’t enhance my magic significantly. It seems they are not suitable for aerial writing.
As I observed the shops, I suddenly felt a sense of loneliness.
I can’t buy new colors of ink anymore, or the latest fountain pens and notebooks. I don’t even know if any new products have been released.
What’s in my collection right now can be duplicated with my Word Magic, so it won’t run out. But I can’t expand it beyond what I have…
Thinking about it, I can’t help but feel a little sad.
I need to stop being so extravagant. I should cherish what I already have. In this world, there might be things worth collecting in the future.
“Takuto, do you need anything?”
“Well, I could use some ores and such…”
“Ores, huh? Then that way.”
Word Magic is also used to enchant ores and precious stones, turning them into decorative items.
I’ve never written aerial letters on stones before, so I’d like to try it on smaller pieces. It’s also an opportunity to practice cutting and polishing.
They may be small, but they’re quite heavy…
But no worries.
I have a tote bag concealed in my shoulder bag, doubling up for this purpose.
I’ll put my purchases into the tote bag and secretly add them to my collection.
I tried putting the shoulder bag directly into the collection before, but it didn’t recognize it as a “bag” and wouldn’t accept it. Well, it’s okay if it doesn’t look like I’ve lost any items.
“Gaihack-san, it’s not that heavy yet, so I’ll carry some.”
“Hmm? Oh, really? That’d be a big help. It’s quite heavy because of all the metal.”
Schlumpf
Oh, seriously, this is heavy.
It’s only about a third of what Gaihack has, too.
Maybe I should make a shopping cart next time…
It would come in handy when Miarella-san buys vegetables too.
No, on second thought, it might be tough to maneuver with wheels on these cobblestones.
Since I said I’d carry it, I can’t make any noise, so I persevered until I got near the house.
Just a little more, and I’ll be free from this weight… or so I thought.
“You!”
Suddenly, someone leaped out from the side and pushed me, causing me to stagger.
I didn’t fall, probably thanks to my daily running. My legs and core are a bit trained.
The one who jumped at me was Mitoka.
“Did you rat me out to the Medical Guild?!”
…Is this guy only capable of acting based on misguided assumptions?
He’s a genius at causing trouble, isn’t he?
Chapter 25 Let’s understand that there are people who are unworthy of trust
“What the hell are you doing, kid?!”
“It’s alright, Gaihack-san. It’s just a kid’s quarrel.”
Thanks to Gaihack-san getting angry, I managed to calm down a bit.
“Because of what you said about Ganzel-san to the Medical Guild…”
“Hold on! Your premise is wrong. I don’t know anyone named Ganzel.”
“You’re still saying that…”
“It’s the truth. How could I rat out someone I don’t even know to the Medical Guild?”
“You’re just saying that to cover it up!”
“Do you mean to say the Medical Guild is foolish enough to be deceived by a child’s casual words?”
The response came from a stranger.
Who’s this?
Interfering in a kids’ argument.
He has long hair tied back… He’s quite handsome… What a pain.
“Whoa…!”
Mitoka tried to escape in a panic, but the man easily grabbed him by the collar.
“You must be Takuto, right?”
“Yes. May I ask for your name?”
“My apologies, I’m Rishlu, the Vice Chairman of the Medical Guild.”
“Rishlu, what’s going on here?”
“Long time no see, Gaihack-san. There were some complaints that the Medical Guild couldn’t just overlook.”
“That’s it! That liar said it!”
This guy really doesn’t update his information. His brain must have a limited capacity.
“I’m the one who filed the complaint, Mitoka.”
“… Lombard-san?”
“Ganzel brainwashed you and made you attack Takuto.”
…Brainwashed? What’s that ominous word?
“No, that’s not true!”
“Then why did you suddenly jump at Takuto, someone you barely even know?”
“Lombard, stop it. The Medical Guild will investigate further.”
Gaihack-san is trying to calm things down, but Lombard-san isn’t listening.
“He planted lies and delusions in your minds, making you dislike other artisans.”
What? Can someone really do that?
“That’s not it… Ganzel-san was just unlucky and was only venting his frustrations…”
“And you took his complaints at face value, causing problems with your mentor and attacking Takuto, right?”
“I see. Telling lies to children is unacceptable, not just as a doctor but as a human being.”
“He always blames others for his own failures. Someone like that has no business being a doctor!”
“But doctors who treat people like us are as rare as Ganzel-san…”
“That’s not true at all. The Medical Guild regularly provides medical care for children like you.”
“Lies. I’ve never heard of that.”
“See? That’s his brainwashing right there.”
There are always those people who decide that anything they haven’t heard or don’t know must be a lie. They refuse to seek out information on their own and rely solely on the input of a select few others.
That’s why they become biased and make mistakes. They easily fall prey to others’ schemes.
But… it’s different from brainwashing, isn’t it?
“…Gaihack-san, what do you mean by children like him?”
“Children who don’t want to be protected by adults.”
“Orphans…?”
“Some of them still have living parents. They’re kids who reject adults and try to live on their own.”
Among them, there must be children who truly have no parents. Even so, they can’t survive on their own. There are probably kids who are trying to escape from that life.
If you fill these kids’ heads with negative opinions about other adults, it isolates them even further from society. I kind of understood why Lombard-san used the term ‘brainwashing.’
“It’s only natural to feel uneasy when someone runs away suddenly when you just want to hear both sides of the story.”
Rishlu-san is right… but maybe Mitoka and the others are scared of being persuaded. They’re afraid of having what they believe in denied.
“I also want to hear from Takuto-kun, is that alright with you?”
“Yes, is it okay if I join now?”
“Takuto, you don’t have to force yourself.”
“Thank you, Gaihack-san. But I want to get this over with quickly.”
“That would be helpful… but we need to catch Ganzel as soon as possible…”
What’s the deal? He’s running away too. It just makes him even more untrustworthy!
