With great powers, comes a great harem! - Chapter 50- Battle for what~1?
Anna Willson, a British immigrant, relocated to Japan with her family and secured a place in the nation’s premier school for sorcery and witchcraft. But what was her ultimate aim?
To maintain her reputation and position as the ‘first’ in everything.
She was used to it. Whether a minor race or a significant exam, Anna settled for nothing short of the top position. Be it an obsession or her deep-seated desire to remain the unparalleled child in her father’s eyes, Anna was resolute in not playing second fiddle to anyone, especially those her age.
However, there was a single person in her life…a single woman of the same age as Anna, whom the blond girl could not surpass nor even come close to defeating.
Maya.
‘She’s keeping her distance without breaking a sweat.’ Anna panted slightly as she assessed her current predicament.
Though her skirmish with Maya had only spanned a brief three minutes, Anna had poured every ounce of her effort into trying to wrestle away the wristband from Maya, even if just for a fleeting moment.
Anna’s forte was weapon manipulation, and she wielded long chains with daggers affixed to both ends. This modified weapon was tailored for Anna, and she demonstrated exceptional mastery over it.
She possessed the ability to manipulate her weapons by understanding their composition and reshaping them to her will. Any object she touched and examined for over three minutes could effectively become an extension of herself, responding to her every command.
However, even with such a versatile ability, Anna wasn’t able to reach anywhere near Maya. Her compound techniques were rendered useless in front of Maya’s skills.
Every time Anna thought she was nearing landing her first hit, Maya just created a huge gap between them without moving much.
‘Diverge.’ Using her mastery to spread her chains and create a web-like formation behind her, Anna turned her attention to the hovering figure of the top-ranked individual. The latter stood aloof, hands folded across her abdomen, effortlessly floating in mid-air.
It was annoyingly intolerable!
‘Charge!’ Unleashing her chains from every conceivable angle, Anna simultaneously lunged forward, intent on defeating Maya in combat before the round concluded.
Anna’s feet moved swiftly, her hawk-like eyes fixated on Maya. It seemed certain that Maya had no way out; other than descending, she had no escape route. And even that path would place Maya directly before Anna.
And at the moment, Anna could ask for nothing more than a decent punch right square Maya’s face.
‘You are done for-eh?!’ Anna’s eyes widened in disbelief as she felt the ground beneath her feet vanish—the very ground she’d been sprinting on moments ago. Before she could register the change, she was assaulted by a flurry of cold, sharp metal.
The web of chains attached with two sharp daggers attacked Anna and the person for whom the attack was prepared, could be seen currently walking out of the arena already.
Maya knew the round was over so there was no point staying away from her lord.
“…” Yuki had a blank expression as he saw the woman walking back at him, with her expression shifting from indifference to slight fluster in no time.
“Did I do well, Yuki-sama?”
The other students also gaped, taken aback by the abrupt shift in Maya’s tone and demeanor. It was as if her previous disposition had been nothing more than a facade.
The Professor swiftly entered the arena to tend to Anna, who had recently collapsed, her limbs ensnared by streams of chains. Fortunately, there were no life-threatening injuries. After all, even in her frustration, Anna had never intended to kill Maya.
Yet, judging by the circumstances, it appeared that Anna would require an extended period to recuperate, both physically and emotionally.
“Did you just… replace your position with Anna, to win this round?” Despite how it sounded, even with his heightened senses, Yuki could decipher it as such.
And as he thought, Maya nodded before responding, “Yes, it was really simple. I just let her chains approach me to the point where she couldn’t dodge before manipulating the space where she would have ended up the very next second and swapped places.”
“…”
….this definitely wasn’t simple at all, was what everyone simultaneously thought.
Yuki’s lips were slightly parted as he realized how terrifyingly she had gained control over Space magic in so little time.
However, more than his admiration he had to do something about that hopeful gaze Maya held which ushered Yuki to bring his hand on her head and gently pat her.
“You did great.” Hearing such a warm tone and feeling his gentle caress, Maya felt her heart melting and her body loosening up. Her shoulders dropped as she purred in his care.
…another side of Maya which they got to witness for the first time
Regardless, the time was ticking and the sparring session needed to be done today, so after transporting Anna to the infirmary with the help of the management staff, the older female returned to the students.
“Well, that was unexpected.” Maki was also taken aback by the shift of events in such a fluent manner and the precise control of sorcery Maya held at the tip of her fingers.
“Okay then, step up next contestants.”
Yuki left Maya’s side hearing a faint, ‘Good luck’ from her before he walked up to the stage.
It was surprising how despite seeing his sister in such a severe condition, Ryan didn’t react much at all. Rather, it seemed he was treating Anna like thin air… worse than a stranger.
Well, Yuki didn’t have any intention of knowing their personal situation and such since he had a more pressing matter to think of.
‘So I ain’t the defender…’ The realization that the professor had selected Ryan as the primary defender for the round was both mildly surprising and deeply unsettling, especially considering that Barrier was Yuki’s signature skill.
“Well, you can’t always choose to defend. You need to push forward sometimes as well.” That was what the older female said before she sent both of them inside the arena.
For security purposes, a double-layered barricade surrounded the arena which would protect the audience in case the participants went overboard.
Yuki took his stance facing Ryan who stood with his arms tucked in his pocket and a blank look on his face.
Yuki inwardly thanked him that Ryan didn’t say some cringe lines, like swearing to win this match or something. Yuki wanted to battle and fortunately, his opponent seemed in the same mood.
The minute ticked, the voices from the crowd subdued as the Professor finally made the announcement,
“Begin!!”
