- Why Am I the Extra in a Love Triangle?! I Just Wanted a Peaceful School Life!
- Chapter 10 - The Bet
We just finished eating, trays pushed aside, the table now a mess of empty cups and leftover rice bits. Katashi leaned back with a loud sigh, arms stretching over his head like he just ran a marathon.
“Dude! That curry hit the spot! I swear I could run a marathon right now!” he grinned, practically bouncing in his seat.
“Energy levels are overflowing as usual huh.” I muttered, shaking my head.
Akira chuckled softly, swirling the ice in his drink like he was in some fancy lounge. “Mmm~ I must admit, today’s meal was quite satisfying. They finally got the spice balance right.”
“Hoho.. maybe the lunch ladies are in love with you,” I teased, watching him flick his bangs dramatically.
He gave me a wink. “Well, who could blame them~?”
“Yo! Yukito, arcade later? Let’s hit the rhythm games, I need to destroy your high score again,” Katashi grinned, already looking hyped after he was full.
I scratched the back of my head awkwardly. “Ah… I can’t today. I, uh… kinda promised to walk home with Miyuki and Kichiro.”
Akira’s eyes lit up in amusement as he slowly leaned forward, resting his chin on his hand. “Ara~? Yukito-kun~ you sure you’ve given up on Miyuk-sani~?”
“Yeah man,” Katashi jumped in with a smirk, nudging my shoulder. “We’re seriously starting to doubt you now!”
I rolled my eyes with a sigh. “I told you guys I really did give up on her. I’m just trying to stay friends, that’s all.”
Akira let out a soft chuckle, swirling his drink. “Mmm~ so noble, staying by her side even after getting rejected so many times. How admirable~”
“You guys are insufferable and don’t understand me,” I groaned, flicking my hair back with my hand as if gesturing that I was getting a headache just talking to these two.
Katashi leaned in with a teasing grin. “Yeah yeah, we definitely believe you, buddy.”
I understand their doubt—if I were in their position, I’d totally be suspicious too.
It’s the usual unrequited love story. But after reflecting on it for a while, things don’t seem as intense anymore. I still have feelings for Miyuki… but not as strong as before.
It’s like my heart and mind finally accepted that she only sees me as a friend—nothing more, nothing less.
And ruining that friendship just because of my feelings? That’d be selfish as hell. Even if she rejected Yukito multiple times… revenge? That’s not even on the table.
But I have drawn a line. I won’t be as close to her as I used to. Being too close—like in the original story—that led to his downfall.
Yukito’s death was never clearly explained. All we got was a two-year timeskip, and boom—next page, a grave, a bouquet of roses, and a single strand of hair. Undeniably his. That’s all.
From what I could piece together, he died still chasing that hopeless love. And it led him to a miserable end.
Honestly… how pathetic can you get, chasing after someone else’s girlfriend?
And yet, I liked this character. Why? Was it because he was sincere? Because of his unwavering resolve?
I stuck with that damn shoujo manga just to see how far he’d go. How far he’d sink chasing a love that was never his to begin with.
It’s sad. It’s pathetic. But maybe… that’s what made him so painfully human. A second male lead, a plot device to highlight the ‘true’ romance between Kichiro and Miyuki.
Ugh. Another headache. I’m overthinking again.
“Dude, you alright? You look stressed and pale,” Katashi asked, his tone laced with genuine concern.
“That’s right~ should we help you to the infirmary room?” Akira chimed in, playful but still worried.
I shook my head and waved it off. “Nah, I’m fine. Just overthinking some things.”
“Oh, alright… ANYWAY GUYS!” Katashi suddenly stood up and smacked his hand on the table, pulling out his phone excitedly.
“Next month, first weekend—we’re going to Tanaka Mariya’s concert! They’re holding a live event, and we’re definitely going!”
“Ehh..? You’re obsessed with her already? Just last night you were drooling over Alexandra, the American celebrity. Are you sick in the head? Do you need help?” I teased with a grin.
“Shhh, Yukito my man… It’s not a mental illness or obsession—it’s the passion of a new K-pop fan! But seriously, Tanaka Mariya turned me into a believer.”
“Ara~ well, I don’t mind. I’m quite curious to see her in person. And they’re holding a fan meeting too~”
Hmm… the ticket price isn’t bad. Probably because they just debuted.
I’ve never been to a concert, not even in my past life.
I should be free that weekend… Oh wait.
Now that I think about it, I do remember something from the manga. Yukito once got invited to an idol concert—but he declined. Said it was out of loyalty to Miyuki.
He wouldn’t even look at other girls. That kind of loyalty… I respected it. Even if it was tragically misplaced.
“Haa… Alright. I don’t think I’ll have any plans.. So i’m free next month, on the first weekend. Reserve me a ticket too, Katashi.” I gave in, sighing.
“Aha! You won’t regret it—she’s drop-dead gorgeous in person!” he grinned cheekily, already tapping away to reserve three tickets.
“Oh, by the way—what was that bet you two were talking about earlier?” I asked, raising a brow.
They both looked at me, confused.
What?
“You seriously don’t know?” Katashi blinked in surprise.
“Of course not. Why would I ask if I already knew?” I muttered.
They exchanged a look. A suspicious, grinning look.
“Well… no take backs now. You already agreed, hehe,” Katashi said with cheeky smile
I glared. “What exactly is this bet?”
“Well~ Yukito-kun,” Akira started with a sly smile, “Did you know our lovely math teacher, Nami-sensei, is holding a quiz tomorrow~? And well, whoever gets the lowest score out of the three of us… gets punished~”
Oh great. It had to be math. The one subject I’ve always hated even back in my previous life.
At this point, I’m convinced math is everyone’s worst subject. If it’s not… are they even human?
“Alright… doesn’t sound too bad. So what’s the punishment?”
They both looked at each other with evil little smirks.
Then, in perfect sync, they said, “Whoever loses has to confess to the Student Council President!”
“…”
I stared at them. Completely dead inside.
Fuck. My. Life.
“I refu—”
“Nuh uh! No refusals! You already agreed! NO TAKE BACKS, MAN!” Katashi cut me off, smug as ever.
Well… as long as I don’t score the lowest, I’ll be fine
Right?
And honestly… they do look dumber than me.
Right…?
But no wait… if I actually lose… there isn’t any real loss here!
If she rejects me—which I’m sure she definitely will—then I don’t lose anything. Just maybe my pride.
But pride? Dignity? That’s cheap. I can live with that. I’ll keep living like a mob character, blending in with the background after the confession.
I actually see this as a win-win. Whether I win or lose the bet, nothing changes much.
But still… let’s assess her for a moment.
And honestly, I don’t even need to assess the “if I win” part, because there’s no damn way she’s going to say yes.
From Yukito’s memories and the manga’s portrayal, I know a fair bit about her.
Fujikawa Reiko. The council president.
She’s one of those cold-hearted, noble-type characters, straight out of an otome game or villainess manga. A solid side character mentioned not just once or twice—but three times. That’s enough to leave an impression.
And of course, she’s mad beautiful. Long black hair that falls all the way to her waist, the kind of posture that makes you think she came from some elite, prestigious bloodline. Skin pale like the moon, but not sickly—well-maintained, elegant.
Oh, and her body? Yeah, let’s just say she’s stacked.
She’s turned down handsome guys, playboys, even some of the smart ones. I genuinely have no idea what her type is—if she even has one.
She doesn’t seem interested in dating at all, honestly. But here’s what bugs me.
Why does she even accept their invites if she’s just going to reject them? She’s the student council president. She’s busy. Shouldn’t she just turn them down right away?
But no. She always walks to the designated confession spot and then rejects them there—on the spot.
I don’t get it. Is she trying to be polite? Dramatic? Does she enjoy watching their world crumble?
RING RING RING!
The bell pulled me out of my thoughts.
I checked my phone. Crap, lunch break’s already over.
All around the cafeteria, students were starting to pack up and leave, the noise slowly turning into chatter and footsteps.
“Alright, time’s up. We should be heading to class too,” I said as I stood up and stretched.
“What class do you guys have now?” Katashi asked, grabbing his bag.
“Hmm~ I think I have P.E class…~” Akira said with that same sing-song voice of his.
“I’ve got English,” I replied, smirking.
“Damn you two… I have math… You guys are lucky,” Katashi groaned like it was the end of the world.
But no wait… if I actually lose… there isn’t any real loss here!
If she rejects me—which I’m sure she definitely will—then I don’t lose anything. Just maybe my pride.

Oh, and her body? Yeah, let’s just say definitely a killer body.
She’s turned down handsome guys, playboys, even some of the smart ones. I genuinely have no idea what her type is, if she even has one.
She doesn’t seem interested in dating at all, honestly. But here’s what bugs me.

Walking down the hallway toward my class, I started noticing something strange—no, not strange, just… different.
The students here were really colorful.
Not in the skin tone kind of way. No, it was the hair.
Pink. Yellow. Blue. Even mint green. And of course, black and brown—the so-called “normal” ones. But seriously, who the hell wakes up with bubblegum pink hair naturally?
In my old world, that’d raise eyebrows. Scientifically impossible—unless you’re albino, or just born blond. But here? It’s like a walking anime convention, and no one bats an eye.
I could sit here and break my head trying to find the logic behind it, but what’s the point?
I sighed internally.
“Yeah, let’s not question it. Just blend in, be normal..” I thought, adjusting my uniform as I reached the classroom door. “This world’s logic isn’t mine to understand anyway.”
—
Finally arriving at my classroom, I slid the door open, walked in, and went straight to my desk.
As I sat down, I could already feel them.
The gazes.
Those sharp, envious stares aimed straight at me.
And why? Simple. Because my desk was on the right side of Miyuki herself.
I slumped down in my seat, letting my bag drop lazily to the floor as I avoided eye contact with anyone. It’s not like I asked to be seated here.
Miyuki, Aka my childhood friend and Aka the class beauty. No, school beauty. She’s known even among the seniors, and a living legend to the freshmen. Graceful, smart, polite… basically every dude’s dream girl.
If you look at it from the outside, it’s a blessing.
Sitting right next to the school idol? Damn, you’re lucky, bro!
Yeah, right.
If only they knew the truth.
It’s just a coincidence. A setup by the story. A scripted convenience.
Not my choice.
Not my win.
The door creaked open and the teacher finally stepped into the room. A few other teachers followed in later for some quick announcements and reminders. Most of the class didn’t really pay attention—we were already halfway mentally checked out.
Before I knew it, the day had flown by in a blur.
“Class dismissed,” the teacher said while packing up his things.
And just like that, the final bell echoed across the halls.
He left us with a bit of homework—nothing too hard, just enough to keep us from rotting our brains at home.
“Finally!” I stretched my arms high and let out a satisfied sigh.
School was over. Thank god.
I started packing my stuff, already thinking about meeting up with the boys and heading home like usual.
But just as I zipped up my bag—I felt it.
A gaze. Burning.
From my left.
I froze, then slowly glanced from the corner of my eye.
Yup. It’s her.
Miyuki.
Her eyes locked onto me, intense, almost expectant. Like she was waiting for something.
Oh right… the after-school walk thing.
“Miyuki-chan~ wanna come to karaoke with the girls?” one of her friends suddenly chirped from across the room.
“Yes! Come hang out with us!”
Oh!? A spark of hope!? Am I off the hook?
But then…
“Sorry girls, not today. I just wanna go home and finish my homework,” Miyuki replied, giving them her usual polite smile.
Like hell you do!
“Aww~ alright… How about you, Kichiro-kun~?” they turned their attention to him.
“Sorry, ladies. I might head home too,” Kichiro answered with a sheepish grin.
Their eyes narrowed. Their smiles turned sly.
“Oooh~ We see how it is… Stay safe, you two~ Don’t get too lovey-dovey!”
With knowing giggles, the girls waved and walked out.
Both Miyuki and Kichiro blushed like guilty kids.
Leaving just the three of us.
The classroom suddenly felt way too quiet.
Damn it. I really thought I was gonna dodge that bullet.
The awkward air lingered around us, heavy and unspoken… until
“Miyuki, Yukito. Wanna head home now?” Kichiro said, finally breaking the silence.
Bless your soul, Kichiro.
I stood up, slinging my bag over my shoulder. “Yeah, let’s head home together. Like we always do.”
They both looked at me strangely serious. Then nodded.
Just as we started moving
“Hey, Yukito…” Miyuki’s voice stopped me in my tracks. “You’ve been acting… kinda distant lately.”
Her gaze wasn’t sharp or judgmental—just concerned.
Yikes.
This is new.
Did me giving up really change the vibe this much?
And now that I think about it… Kichiro hasn’t made any moves either. Isn’t he supposed to step in now that I’ve backed off? That’s how it went in the manga… right?
“Distant, huh?” I repeated, then scratched my cheek awkwardly. “Well… we’ve been together since we were kids. But we’re almost done with high school. Don’t you think it’s time we gave each other a little space?”
Their expressions shifted—surprised. And then…
They both burst into laughter.
“…What’s so funny?”
Kichiro smiled, shaking his head. “It’s just… it’s so unlike you to say something like that. You were always the one holding the three of us together. And honestly
, the way you said it? Kinda sounded like we’re in a weird poly relationship.”
Ugh. I turned away, my ears burning. “Haaah… Whatever. Let’s just go home, you two.”
Miyuki’s giggles echoed down the hallway behind me.
I glanced back at them, half amused, half flustered
But then I saw it.
Just for a second.
Kichiro’s face.
I couldn’t read his expression at all.

Author out-
If it become MC x Miyuki in the end, it will be a trash novel.
I am actively starting to dislike the MC. He is a coward and a beta and has no conviction. “But pride? Dignity? That’s cheap.” Classic beta submissive mentality. And as others have noted, his pathetic half heartedness in adhering to his previously stated conviction to avoid the romance plot that he KNOWS will lead to his death is annoying AF.
And yes the “overthinking” headache thing as a hint to a future plot thread was noted.
honestly i wish he stuck to what he said when he told her i want to prioritize my self and just distanced himself from both of them, like the chemistry between him and the 2 guys was great but these 2 “childhood” friends and his reluctance to accept what they saw him and keep doing to not change the storyline is giving my hesitance to continue this novel.
this was great at the start but the last couple of chapters are frustrating and i might drop it
I think we already have an understanding of Kichiro and why he’s still trying to keep Yujiro around… he’s just an evil scumbag who’s manipulating and deceiving his “friends” for his own amusement.
Miyuki on the other hand is someone that I’d like to see a PoV chapter for again soon. She has looked down on Yujiro their entire lives and never respected him or his feelings for her. So why did they even stay in contact with him in the first place? Was it because Kichiro pushed her to do it or did she have her own reasons? I get that he was a constant source of validation for her but it sounds like she could get that from anywhere. Was she using him in some other ways (free food from his family even)?
Why was she even upset when he gave up? You would think that she would be relieved because it made their friendship awkward but I guess Yujiro was doing all the emotional weightlifting to keep the peace anyway.
We saw Yujiro say that ditching them as friends just because he couldn’t be with Miyuki would be selfish, but I simply don’t agree. It is not a natural reaction at all. He told her that he was choosing himself but when is he going to start actually doing that? When is he going to realize that they were never his friends from the beginning?
The MC has convictions but isn’t following through. His choices prolong his suffering and follow his known path towards death and he does that without explaining why. Sure, he doesn’t know that Kichiro is the one who’s going to kill him, but he doesn’t need to either. He should be making big changes to his actions in the story, not minuscule changes that likely amount to nothing.
Honestly this is getting frustrating to read and I might need a break.
Agree 100%. The MC not following through is beyond frustrating and turning into the “turn MC stupid to create dramatic tension” trope.
I think Miyuki gets quite as much validation as she got from Yujiro. And plenty of women get upset about losing a source of validation from beta “nice guy” orbiter and then working to get them back into their orbit, it’s basically a trope.
But I think probably Miyuki is getting a case of you don’t know what you got until it’s gone. While Miyuki looks down on Yujiro and doesn’t see him as a romantic interest (yet), they are childhood friends and she still hung out with him even though she kept rejecting him. I think she was basically too comfortable with Yujiro to feel interested in him while Kiichiro, even though he’s supposed to be a childhood friend, probably gives her more excitement maybe because he seems to have a bit more distance. Of course, now that Yujiro is distancing himself from her, she’s probably going to start missing his presence and start to feel differently about him.
But I definitely don’t want her to be the main or even a romantic interest. She’s basically the cheating gf character in must “serves you right/ntr revenge” stories. Even though it’s technically more like BSS than NTR and even then it’s more like potential BSS because it’s what would’ve occurred in the future if Yujiro wasn’t changing the story.
I’m a bit more hopeful now that we see some hints of potentially new heroines that will be introduced.
But I definitely agree that Yujiro is being too half-hearted about distancing himself. He probably thinks he can just still maintain their friendship but we see from Kiichro’s viewpoint that it won’t work because Kiichiro is only interested in Miyuki because Yujiro liked her. And Miyuki is probably going to try pull him back into liking her again as well. I’m guessing there’s probably going to be a point where Kiichiro and Miyuki tries to pull him back too hard that then he will realize and start actually putting distance from them. Maybe when he starts getting involved with a new heroine, Miyuki is going to start acting jealous and piss him off trying to control him leading him to completely break off their relationship.
I thought it was pretty obvious the male childhood friend was just a shitty netorare guy from the description of his appearance in chapter one alone.
