Chapter 32: Lunch, Momiji’s Poker Face, and Yamada
Almost a week had passed since my return to school, but I was still leading a loner high school life as always, spending lunchtime alone at my desk.
That said, what Nanoka-san had told me that morning about the family trip lingered in my mind.
A trip for the five of us as a family, without Dad…
It was already mid-April, so it was indeed the time to think about plans for Golden Week, but… because of the aftereffects of being shut-in for a whole year, I could not sleep well when my pillow changed, so I had a passive side when it came to trips.
Moreover, if it turned into a trip with those four, there was an eighty to ninety percent chance I might end up sharing a room with someone, or even all five of us in the same room.
“Pillows or not, I wouldn’t be able to sleep… haa.”
“You look so down in the dumps, Aoto-senpai.”
As I mulled over this and that while eating the bento Momiji had made for me, Yamada came over to my desk with her bento bag in hand, flipped the chair from the desk in front of mine—Momiji’s seat—and placed her bento bag on my desk.
“What is it, Yamada? If it’s lunch, just eat it alone.”
“I-it’s fine, isn’t it! Today, Anko-chan said she’s eating lunch with the three sisters during the break, so… I thought I’d eat with Aoto-senpai as a treat!”
“I don’t need that… wait, hold on, Yamada. Eating with the three sisters? You mean Anko and the others?”
I had not heard anything about that at all.
It was true that once lunchtime started, all three of them had gotten up from their seats at different times and gone somewhere, but… what the hell, we had talked about siblings this morning, and now I was the only one left out right away.
Well, if I thought pessimistically, maybe I was being excluded… but those three would not do something like that.
If that was the case, then there must be something they did not want me to hear.
“Aoto-senpai! Aoto-senpai!”
“Huh, oh, sorry, Yamada, what is it?”
“Jeez! Were you listening to me? Today, I made this bento myself!”
“H-huh…”
As I was lost in thought, Yamada opened her own bento box and showed it to me.
She had made character-shaped rice with nori to look like a bear on top of the white rice, and there were plenty of side dishes with a nice balance of colors that looked delicious… but there was one thing that caught my eye.
She had placed two sliced boiled eggs side by side horizontally, and in the center, a thick sausage—this blatant… dirty joke that was obvious at a glance.
Was this implicitly telling me to point it out?
“This one is the bunny made from carrot, and this is the panda made from sesame salt and hanpen!”
“Um, Yamada. So what is this?”
“Oh, that’s the elephant!”
“Then it’s not a di●ck.”
“Wha! It’s not a di●ck! What are you saying, senpai! Talking about di●cks at mealtime will get you in trouble!”
No, even I, who was not particularly good at dirty jokes, thought it was way too much of a di●ck normally…
“A-anyway, putting aside whether this is a di●ck or not.”
“You’re the one making such a fuss about di●cks, you know.”
“It’s senpai’s fault!”
Yamada said this in a trembling voice, her face beet red.
I had teased her too much… well, but with Yamada, it was fine.
“A-anyway! Do you want to eat this? Momone-chan’s special homemade bento.”
“Sure. It would be a shame to waste the bento you worked hard to make.”
“I-I’m asking if you want to eat it because I worked hard to make it…”
“Huh?”
If she had worked hard to make it, did she not want to eat it herself?
No, knowing the confident Yamada, maybe she just wanted to show off her cooking skills to me.
No helping it; I would eat it before she made more noise about di●cks and what not.
“Then I’ll have one. Which one can I take?”
“Um… this, the tamagoyaki, but.”
“Tamagoyaki, huh? Alright then.”
“Whoa! I’ll do the ‘ahh’ for you.”
“Huh?”
Yamada picked up the tamagoyaki with her own chopsticks and brought it to my mouth.
‘Ahh,’ like that—something only toddlers or lovey-dovey couples would do.
“If you do not eat it quick, it will fall, so, h-here.”
“But, you.”
“It’s fine!”
Since Yamada kept pushing, I unwillingly chomped down on that tamagoyaki.
In the end, she had fed it to me… well, there was no one in this classroom looking our way anyway, so it was okay.
“Yay… i-is it delicious?”
“Y-yeah, it’s really delicious? The tamagoyaki is sweet and soft; I did not know you could cook, Yamada.”
“Of course! Um, that… if you liked it, then from now on, I could make Aoto-senpai’s bento for you.”
“Aoto-kun♡ Momone-chan♡ What are you two doing~?”
As we were eating our bentos, Momiji suddenly appeared behind Yamada as if she had sprouted out of nowhere.
Mo… Momiji!? Wh-when did you get there…
“Hey, Momone-chan? What were you about to say to Aoto-kun?”
Her tone was her usual gentle one, but Momiji asked with an unusually straight face. It was scary now.
“Eek, th-that… sorry!”
Yamada packed up her bento and fled somewhere.
What was all that…
“Hey hey, Aoto-kun.”
“What is it, Momiji…”
“Just so you know? The only one allowed to do ‘ahh’ to Aoto-kun is your big sister, me. Keep that in mind♡.”
Mo, maybe Momiji had seen the scene where Yamada fed me and got the wrong idea… haa.
“…Scaaaary.”
“Did you say something?”
“N-no.”
I had no choice but to engrave it in my mind.
“By the way, I forgot to invite you to lunch, Aoto-kun, so I came back, but there is something we all want to talk about, so could you come?”
“Huh, something to talk about?”
