Chapter 6: Ellie
“…I’m sorry, Roa. I’ve done so many things to you that I shouldn’t have… I’m, really, sorry.”
“…Ellie.”
Ellie, who always wore a wide-brimmed, triangular hat pulled low over her eyes, was now sobbing, her usually expressionless face crumpled.
Ellie.
Ellie was a noble, hailed as a prodigy in magic. Both the school and the country had high expectations for her, and she even had her own large research lab at school. With her slightly wavy brown hair and large, round eyes, she was shorter than most girls of her age. Her lack of expression made her appear almost like an intricately crafted, beautiful doll.
She was always quiet, and people who didn’t interact with her much might think she was emotionless. She had once told me she was bad at social interactions and found them troublesome. However, if you paid attention, you could tell that when she laughed, she was genuinely happy; when she was angry, she was truly angry.
Now, her usually calm face was twisted in such a way that anyone could tell she was crying.
“I’m, sorry, Roa. I never meant to hurt you. I don’t know what came over me back then. I’m, really, sorry.”
Tears were streaming uncontrollably from her large eyes.
“From now on, I’ll live for Roa. All the results of my research, I’ll give them all to you, Roa. I don’t need, wealth or fame. If I have Roa, that’s enough.”
“…”
“I only need Roa. I don’t need anything else. I’ll give you everything. If you tell me to die, I’ll die. If you want me to kill someone, I’ll kill them. I’ll do anything for you. That’s the only way I can even begin to make it up to you. I’m, sorry.”
Ellie spoke louder than usual, and although her words were a bit halting as always, she said it in a clear tone.
I had no idea how to respond. I had replied to Mia and Aria, but only God would know if that was the right thing to do.
But right now, all I could do was trust myself.
“…I told Aria this as well, but I don’t want anyone to get hurt. Especially not by their own actions.”
“…Mm.”
“To be honest, I don’t know if things can go back to how they were with you and the others. I’m scared. My mind understands that it’s probably okay now, but my body and heart…my subconscious is rejecting you all.”
“…”
“So, let’s see. As a compromise, how about you catch me up on the school lessons I’ve missed once a week?”
“…I-is that okay?”
“Yeah.”
“…Really?”
“Yeah.”
Ellie looked at me with concern, probably wondering if it would really be okay. But I thought it would be. Chloe would probably be there if anything happened, so it should be fine.
Afterwards, Ellie repeatedly asked, “Really?” to confirm my agreement. My smile might have been awkward, but she seemed to finally accept it. She readjusted her triangular hat and headed for the door.
“…So, I’ll start teaching you next week.”
“Yeah, I’ll be waiting.”
“…Roa, thank you. Really… See you later.”
“Yeah, see you.”
“See you.”
The last expression Ellie showed was emotionless, but I could see that the corners of her mouth had lifted ever so slightly.
