Chapter 4: Mia
“Roa, I was really messed up. I swear, I won’t hurt you anymore.”
It was Mia who spoke first.
Mia was my childhood friend and, like me, a commoner. To be honest, she was a childhood friend far too good for someone like me. Her face stood out as exceptionally cute even in school. Her long, black hair was glossy and beautiful, and although her eyes were a bit sharp, her face turned endearing when she smiled. Moreover, she had a greater talent for magic and was better at studies than me.
Among everyone, I had spent the most time with her.
However, she was no longer the Mia I knew. Her once shiny, black hair had lost its luster, and dark circles had appeared under her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
It was clear she wanted to bridge the gap between us as before, but perhaps understanding that her approach made me flinch, she didn’t come closer. Instead, she sat down on the floor and bowed her head in a gesture similar to prostration(dogeza).
“I know what I’ve done is unforgivable. But I want to slowly rebuild our relationship, Roa. I’ll do whatever it takes for that. If that means you do to me what I did to you, so be it. In fact, I think doing more than that would be proper atonement.”
She ground her head against the floor as she said such things.
Even now, remembering what Mia had done to me makes my body tremble, and I almost break down crying. I find myself resenting her, fearing her.
Of course, I’m no saint either, and part of me wants to retaliate…
“I can’t do that. True, Mia did something terrible to me, and even if I assume you were being manipulated, it would probably still be hard to forgive you. But I can’t do to you what you did to me.”
I had memories with Mia and others, and I had considered them my friends.
“Then… what should I do to become friends with Roa again? How can we go back to the way things were? What… what should I do?”
Mia lifted her bowed head.
Looking at her face, I saw that it was contorted as she cried, her eyes pleadingly fixed on me.
“…I can’t stand it. I don’t care if anyone else hates me or insults me, but I don’t want to be distant from Roa. I don’t want to be hated by you. I know it’s selfish, but I absolutely don’t want to be apart from Roa. I’d rather die than that!”
Mia became more and more emotional as she moved closer to me.
“No, I absolutely can’t stand it. I want to be by Roa’s side forever. I should always be the one by your side!! I must’ve been manipulated by someone. Believe me!!”
Her shout was like a tantrum, and my body involuntarily flinched. Sweat burst from my pores, and my breathing grew faster, increasingly verging on hyperventilation as my chest tightened in pain.
“Mia, you better not get any closer to Roa. Calm down and look at his condition. Can’t you see how scared he is?”
Chloe, who quickly noticed that something was off about me, spoke up and stopped Mia from coming any closer. Thanks to Chloe, I managed to regain control of my breathing. When I finally looked back at Mia, her face was hollow with despair.
“Ah, eh, um, I’m sorry, Roa. I didn’t mean to scare you. I just really can’t stand the thought of not being able to reconcile with you. I’m really sorry.”
She sank to the floor and began muttering “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” over and over like a broken doll.
I didn’t know what to say, so all I could do was watch Mia.
