Chapter 3
“What’s going on, Chloe?”
“Ah… well, I guess it’s something that will eventually come out even if I hide it, so I should just tell you.”
Chloe spoke, a hesitant look on his face.
“Roa, those girls who hurt you are coming to this house every day. They’re begging to be allowed to apologize to you, to care for you, to make amends. They’re even prostrating themselves and refusing to move. They’ve suddenly started to get violent as well, it’s become quite problematic.”
…Could it be? Had those girls returned to normal?
…No, wait. It’s too early to conclude that. I can’t rule out the possibility that this is a cunning trap by them to see my face twisted in despair. Or maybe I just want to believe they’ve changed.
“Getting rid of them isn’t an option. Ordinary knights can’t handle them.”
“…I see.”
“They might want to see you, but it would be hard for you to face them, wouldn’t it?”
“…Well, yeah. Honestly, it scares me and it’s painful.”
Even if they had changed, my heart isn’t not generous enough to forgive what they’ve done to me. Could anyone really say, “Okay, you’ve apologized, so I forgive you,” after nearly being killed?
“I thought so. Sorry, I’ll go and try to convince them to leave. I’ll be stepping out for a bit.”
Chloe said, opening the door to leave.
To be honest, I can’t bring myself to forgive them. I’m scared. If I saw them, I might start trembling or even break down in tears. Still…
“Wait, Chloe.”
“?”
“I want to talk to them.”
Memories of happy, enjoyable days with those girls still lingered in my mind. Besides, I didn’t want to burden Chloe any further.
“Are you sure?”
“I am.”
“If you say so, I won’t argue. But, um, can I also be present during the discussion?”
Chloe looked clearly worried as he spoke to me. His eyes were filled with palpable anxiety.
“Thank you, really. I’m sorry for always causing you trouble.”
“It’s fine. That’s what best friends are for, right?”
How many people in the world would say that to me with a smile? I felt truly blessed to have such a friend.
“Alright, I’ll go and bring them here. But if it gets too tough for you, say the word, okay? I won’t hesitate to kick them out.”
“Yeah.”
Chloe wore a concerned expression until he walked out the door. To any outsider, he must have looked like a competent older sibling taking care of a helpless younger one. My chest tightened with shame and guilt towards Chloe, but for now, I would focus on facing those girls.
I couldn’t easily prepare myself emotionally. But somehow, I forced myself to suppress the mixed feelings of anxiety, tension, and fear, trying to calm my mind.
Several minutes later, there was a knock at the door. “Roa, may I come in?” Chloe asked. I responded, and the door slowly opened, letting the girls in.
Their faces had lost the luster and vibrant cheeks they once had; their hair was no longer beautiful. They looked lifeless, almost ghostly, as if wandering between this world and the next.
When my eyes met theirs, tears immediately began to flow from their eyes. They moved closer to me, causing my body to involuntarily flinch. I quickly retreated back on the large bed in Chloe’s house.
Although I knew in my head that I should face them and have a proper conversation, my deeply wounded heart and body instinctively rejected them.
Seeing my reaction, their faces crumbled even further into despair, and they hid their faces in their hands, crying.
Even their movements filled me with terror, as if fear crawled from the depths of my being, overpowering even physical pain and making my body quiver involuntarily. It couldn’t be helped.
It took several long minutes before the conversation finally began.
