Chapter 14: After the Battle Began
About three minutes had passed since the fight started.
Amidst the loud crashing sounds that echoed through the area, Lieselotte couldn’t help but be shocked.
(Seriously, what’s with this master-servant pair…)
Iris’s eight-meter-long weapon tore through the pillars as it swung.
The bandits caught in its path screamed as blood sprayed, and the place descended into complete chaos.
“Hahaha! Now, now! You’d better run, or this cute maid will cut you to pieces! Try to survive like the stubborn little cockroaches you are!”
Of course, the one creating all this chaos was Iris.
With her small frame and delicate arms, she swung around her segmented sword, its sharp blades gleaming.
It was already terrifying that she could wield it so easily, but the real issue was the weapon’s unpredictable movements.
The blade flexed like a whip, making its path hard to predict. The added centrifugal force meant that even if someone managed to block it, they’d be knocked back. And if they couldn’t dodge, the blade would slice them clean in half.
(Usually, the longer the reach, the more blind spots it creates…)
Iris made sure that no enemies got close. She didn’t even need to move.
Instead, she waited for the enemies to rush in and then precisely crushed them with the delayed strikes of her segmented blade.
Her excellent eyesight and combat experience were clear. With that level of skill, even arrows or magic launched from a distance didn’t matter.
Since she could predict their movements and attacks, she could defeat the enemies with just a few swings of her sword.
(Meanwhile, I’m barely managing to cover her blind spots…!)
Lieselotte couldn’t ignore the difference in their skills and natural talent.
All she could do was stay near Iris’s hard-to-reach blind spots, cutting down any enemies that tried to sneak up and create an opening.
But honestly, it wasn’t that difficult. She didn’t have to worry about attacks from the sides or behind, only focusing on the enemies charging straight at her, making the job much easier.
(Sigh… I was all fired up about supporting Yulis, but as long as this girl is around, I still have a long way to go.)
Lieselotte gripped her sword tightly.
“Die, you brat!!!”
With that, she swung her sword, staying in sync with Iris and covering her as best as she could.
—Meanwhile, Iris couldn’t help but be a little surprised by Lieselotte’s efforts on her right flank.
(Hmph… Not bad, I have to admit.)
Her weapon wasn’t something just anyone could use.
It lacked maneuverability, and while it had a lot of power, it also created more blind spots.
She knew her weapon inside and out—how to swing it, where the blind spots would be, and how to move to cover them.
But no matter what she did, the right side where she swung her arm always remained an unavoidable blind spot.
That’s where Lieselotte came in.
She intercepted arrows, blocked magic, and stopped any enemies charging in, making sure nothing reached Iris.
(It’s her first time seeing my weapon, and we’ve only just met… yet she’s already providing perfect support. It’s like she’s as skilled as my mother was…)
“Tsk,” Iris muttered under her breath, almost spitting out the words—
“…old hag.”
“Hey, watch it, you little shrimp! I heard that, and we’re the same age!”
In terms of individual strength, honestly, Lieselotte couldn’t quite match up to Iris or Yulis.
But her keen insight, her ability to read the battlefield and keep track of allies—it was impressive.
No wonder she’d been chosen for the elite royal capital knights.
(She’s found a way to support like this…! Why does Master always ignore my feelings and end up attracting such talented rivals!?)
But even so, despite their different backgrounds and experiences—
[1]I’m the one who’s going to support Master (Yulis)!!
—I won’t lose to this girl.
That fierce determination sparked in their hearts right then and there.

And as for the guy who was being fought over by these two girls—
“W-What the heck is this!?”
“The ground is freezing up…!?”
“It’s magic! Just keep blasting it with whatever magic we’ve got!”
He had made it through a long hallway and reached a wide, open space.
There, he found himself surrounded by even more enemies than he’d faced above.
But most of them had already been turned into beautiful ice sculptures.
(Now that I think about it, this really isn’t the kind of mission you should dump on a new recruit…)
A fireball flew his way. Yulis swung his sword, extending its blade and freezing the flames on the spot.
(These guys are like cockroaches! Or maybe bees! Even if the mission briefing was just a single page, they could’ve at least written some proper details, you useless knights!)
He grabbed the head of a man who rushed at him and slammed him into the ground.
He swung his sword again, freezing a mage who thought they were safely out of reach.
“Brace yourselves, you bastards… it’s time to pay for all the misery you’ve caused others!”
How many times had he repeated this same fight already?
The number of enemies had clearly dwindled, but Yulis was still putting in plenty of work.
(…I can’t afford to back down now.)
If he failed here, there was a chance he’d be thrown back into the fray again.
That’s why he clenched his fist tighter.
“I’m not about to lose to a bunch of pests in this extermination job!!!”
With every breath he exhaled turning white, Yulis kept unleashing the power of his ice—
And then, finally.
A few minutes… no, maybe ten or fifteen minutes later?
The area around him was covered in patches of smooth ice, with countless frozen sculptures scattered across the ground.
After using magic for so long, every breath Yulis took came out as a puff of white, and even now, with the silence settling in, his breath still lingered like a frosty mist.
(Seriously, they could’ve at least written a proper mission briefing…)
Crunch.
Yulis walked forward over the icy ground.
And then—
“…No one told me there’d be such a cute girl (heroine) here.”
Right in the direction Yulis was heading, a girl with hair that blended perfectly into the snowy scenery lay unconscious on the ground.
