- Chapter 86- Together and forever (The end)
The room was fairly silent, and it was natural for the house to be this peaceful given the clock was nearing twelve in the night.
If anything disturbed the tranquillity of the silence then it was Emiko’s voice—who currently held her phone connected to her ear and chatted with her friend.
Under normal circumstances, Emiko doesn’t call Naomi unless necessary and is never around this hour since she has Haruki to talk with. However, today, she was feeling a bit lonely since Haruki wasn’t at home and she didn’t want to disturb him. He has gone to have a sleepover with his friend Hayato.
That’s why Naomi was currently on the call.
[Have you talked to him about the engagement?]
From the other side, Naomi asked something about which Emiko has been quite troubled about for some time now.
No, it wasn’t like she didn’t want to get engaged. On the contrary, she was prepared to become Haruki’s wife if he was willing to marry her. However, her problems arise from the fact that Haruki is someone who believes in traditions.
“I think he would take me back to Kyoto to meet my parents.” She heaved a sigh and tried to suppress her overflowing emotions when she recalled what happened back in Kyoto.
She nearly lost Haruki the last time they went there. Regardless of how it happened, Emiko considered Miyako to be the reason.
The other side remained silent for some time before Naomi hesitantly asked,
[…can’t you forgive your mother, already?]
“No.” Emiko’s response contained no hesitation and the way her tone shifted dramatically, sent a signal to Naomi that this wasn’t the topic she should be talking about.
Suddenly, Naomi remembered something and exclaimed,
[Hey, wait! Your birthday is in a few minutes, no?]
Emiko grumbled, “Why do you remember it?”
[I have set a reminder. Anyway, you called me because you were upset about Haruki’s absence right? Right?]
Sometimes Emiko feels irritated at how perceptive her friend is.
However, “No, it isn’t like…I am upset or anything. I am not a teenager anymore to sulk over such trivial things like my birthday.”
[Hmm…and Haruki must have been unaware of your birthday since the birth date published in the media is fake.]
Emiko didn’t particularly agree with this since Haruki, in their last life, used to celebrate her birthday with her without missing a single year after they met.
He always arrived at her doorstep by twelve while holding a small muffin and greeted her birthday at that time when no one was there for her.
However, she couldn’t expect the same from him in this life as well. Things have changed and just as she said to Naomi, she was no longer a teenager to feel hopeful of these trivial days.
[Hey, are you crying?]
“*Hicc* Why would I?” While wiping away her tears, Emiko retorted.
Naomi, from the other end, sighed and wondered if she should go to Emiko with some presents.
However, before she could continue the train of thought, the doorbell rang from the other side.
[Hmm?! Who might it be at this hour?]
Even Emiko was startled to hear the doorbell as she slowly rose to her feet.
“Wait a moment…” Emiko frowned and went through her phone to open the CCTV app from where she checked the person at the door.
Her brows rose high upon seeing a swaying Haruki standing there with his face evidently flushed
‘Did he drink?’ There was no doubt about it that Haruki was heavily drunk.
“It’s Haru-kun…I will call you later.” Emiko told Naomi and before the latter could say anything, Emiko disconnected the call.
Walking hastily toward the door, Emiko completely forgot about her sorrow and concern overtook her consciousness.
What could have happened that made Haruki return home at this hour? Such thoughts filled her head as she finally reached the door.

“Welcome ba-” Her words got stuck in her throat and her eyes slowly stretched in surprise.
In front of her, stood the same person she watched on camera. However, his condition was not in the same state she was expecting.
Unlike what she saw on her mobile screen, Haruki stably stood there…while wearing a familiar uniform.
That…uniform was from the same restaurant where he used to work in his previous and even in this life before he met her.
On his head rested a birthday conical cap with two balloons held in his left hand. And in his right hand, there was something that illuminated his smiling face.
A small muffin with a single candle embedded in it.
“Happy birthday, Emiko.”
The said person covered her mouth as tears welled up in her big eyes.
She…never considered that Haruki would remember her birthday and would greet her in this familiar way.
Her emotions welled up and her chest became all fuzzy.
“H-Haru-kun…you remembered?”
“Of course, I would. How can you even expect me to forget the day when I could look this silly yet you never laugh at me.”
Emiko chuckled at that with her eyes turning crescent. She couldn’t express how elated and fortunate she was feeling right now, that she fell for him.
The duo then went inside the house and sat on the dining table, beside each other.
Haruki took out another birthday cap and put it on her head.
“Here, say cheese.” Holding the camera above them, he took a picture of them looking like a fool, together.
Emiko didn’t shy away from the camera, and she also took several pictures of the chocolate chip muffin—something she extremely liked but barely ate.
Haruki fetched a small knife from the kitchen before handing it to Emiko.
In his last life, he didn’t have much money to afford a cake that’s why he bought the cheaper version. However, now, despite having more than enough to afford several cakes, he still went for something with which they shared numerous memories.
Emiko blew the candle, as Haruki clapped and merrily sang the ‘Happy birthday’ song for Emiko.
With a smile never leaving her face, Emiko sliced the muffin before bringing it near his lips.
Haruki bit on the fluffy bread before he fed her back.
Once they were done finishing the muffin, Haruki got up from his seat while holding her hand.
Emiko followed his lead and stood up as well.
Haruki heaved a long breath before he inserted his free hand into his pocket and took out a velvet small box.
Emiko’s heart thumped against her chest as she saw the box
Haruki felt incredibly nervous for some reason, but at this point, nothing was going to stop him.
Going down on one knee, Haruki took the formal proposing pose before lifting the top of the box—inside where a ring was placed.
While staring into her moistened eyes, Haruki said, “It has been a long journey until now, Emiko. Only both of us know how many things we have gone through to reach this point. However, if there was something that never changed, then it was my feelings for you.”
Summoning all the courage he could muster, Haruki added, “I am deeply, madly and inexplicably in love with you. So can you give me the chance to walk by your side in the future as well?”
Emiko wanted to jump up and down in joy. She wanted to express how happy she was at this very moment. After going through so many phases, they finally reached the point where both of them were prepared to be together.
This…was nothing less than a dream come true.
Nodding her head, she softly said,
“Yes….I want to. Please never leave my side, Haru-kun.”
