When I Tried Strengthening 【Rusted Sword】, It Evolved Into An Overpowered Magic Sword
Chapter 33 Activity base
After completing the artifact maintenance, I came to the guild with Dia to report the completion of the request.
I was concerned that the temple might be crowded with many adventurers, but as far as I could see, it didn’t seem to be too busy.
Feeling relieved, we went to the reception counter, and I attempted to get the attention of the staff as usual.
“Excuse me, um… could you please take our request report…”
As I peered into the reception counter, I saw a familiar figure there.
“Oh, Charm-san!”
“Ahh, if it isn’t Sabi Sabi-kun and the silver-haired girl. Welcome back!”
A girl, appearing much younger than her age, wearing a pink fluttery dress and swaying hair of the same color. She cherished a gothic Lolita doll beside her, adding to her youthful appearance.
This person, with an appearance that didn’t seem like a typical guild staff, is Charm Fluorit-san, who served as the examiner during the adventurer exam.
Even after becoming adventurers, we’ve frequently relied on her assistance.
“What’s going on, both of you~? Are you perhaps about to take on a new request for the night~? Please be careful with nighttime adventures as they can be quite dangerous~”
“N-no, it’s not about taking on a request. We would like to report the completion of a request…”
As usual, with her elusive nature, I couldn’t help but give a wry smile. If anything, coming for a request report around this time would be the more natural assumption. She’s truly an intriguing person.
When I explained the reason for our visit to the guild, Charm-san happily nodded.
“All right~! A request report, then~. First, please show me your adventurer handbooks.”
We handed over our adventurer handbooks as instructed. Charm-san checked the records of accepted requests in our handbooks, then retreated for a moment. Soon after, she returned with a sheet of paper – the request document we had accepted.
Charm-san examined the paper, nodding as she confirmed the details. When adventurers accept requests at the guild, the staff introduces several suitable ones based on the adventurer’s class and achievements. Adventurers then choose from the recommendations. Therefore, the requests available to adventurers are determined at the discretion of the staff. While urgent or time-sensitive requests take priority, most of the time, staff members select requests based on their judgment.
Building good relationships with guild staff is crucial for adventurers. Choosing the same town’s guild as a base, reporting requests to the same staff member, and gaining their recognition can lead to better recommendations for high-quality requests.
We, however, prefer simplicity and are not particularly skilled at such intricate social nuances. Therefore, we usually approach whoever is available.
“The accepted request is for the collection of Mirroring Grass, right? Well then, let me take a look inside the bag~.”
“Y-yes.”
Upon her request, I promptly placed the bag on the counter. Charm-san examined its contents, nodding approvingly. After a brief check, she smiled.
“Yes~! Everything’s perfect~! The collection request has been successfully completed~”
“…Phew.”
I unintentionally let out a sigh of relief. Each time, an indescribable tension accompanies this moment. Thoughts like, ‘What if the request wasn’t completed?’ start to cross my mind.
Regardless, after successfully reporting the Mirroring Grass collection request, Charm-san stamped our adventurer handbooks and handed over the reward money. I carefully stowed them away in my pocket and suddenly recalled something.
Come to think of it, isn’t an adventurer handbook rendered invalid if there’s no activity for a certain period? Thus, these stamps serve as proof of our continued activity as adventurers.
With the adventurer handbooks, adventurers can access certain places, enjoy facilities, and avail themselves of services at a discounted rate. Many adventurers continue their activities to reap the benefits of their handbooks.
In any case, I updated my adventurer handbook like a diary, confirming my activities as an adventurer for today.
“All right~! With this, the procedures are complete~. Great job, SabiSabi-kun and Silver-haired-chan~!”
“Th-thank you.”
“T-thank you for your hard work.”
We gave somewhat sluggish responses, still not accustomed to the peculiar distance with Charm-san. While it’s good for adventurers to be on friendly terms with guild staff, Charm-san tends to close the distance first, making it somewhat awkward for us. Both Dia and I are somewhat shy, and being approached in this way makes it difficult to know how to react.
Setting that aside, there were a few things I wanted to say to Charm-san. First and foremost…
“Um, Charm-san…”
“Yes?”
“I would appreciate it if you could refrain from calling me ‘SabiSabi-kun.'”
“Eh~? Why is that~?”
“W-well, it just feels a bit uncool, you know?”
“Eh~ It’s not like that at all~. Isn’t it super cute~?”
The conversation feels a bit disconnected.
I mentioned that the nickname ‘SabiSabi-kun’ is ‘uncool,’ yet Charm-san responds with ‘cute’?
Well, it’s not about being cute. If I’m going to be called something, isn’t there a more cool, adventurer-like nickname?
“Considering your rust-colored hair and your rusty artifact, ‘SabiSabi’ suits you perfectly~.”
“Even if you say that…”
Though I make a disapproving face, Charm-san shows no sign of giving in. Why is she so fixated on this nickname? Perhaps, similar to how she calls Amethyst ‘Purple-chan’ and Dia ‘Silver-haired-chan’ based on their hair colors, she has a naming pattern?
In any case, there’s no helping it. No matter how much I protest, it seems unlikely that she’ll change her mind.
Reluctantly, I decide to accept reality.
“Fine, SabiSabi-kun is good.”
“Exactly~! SabiSabi-kun is super cute, isn’t it~? You’ll probably get used to it over time~.”
… I hope so.
Sighing inwardly, I quickly moved on to my second question.
“Oh, and Charm-san.”
“Hm? Is there something else~?”
“Well, it’s not a big deal, but, um…”
Feeling more awkward about this question than the nickname issue, I cautiously asked Charm-san.
“I apologize for this somewhat materialistic question, but, um, do you happen to have any high-paying requests or something that we could take on?”
“High-paying requests?”
Charm-san tilted her head in surprise.
Well, that’s a natural reaction.
“Are you, by any chance, having financial troubles~?”
“Well, to put it bluntly…”
“Mmm, well, that’s kinda like the fate of Copper-grade Bronze adventurers~. It’s quite challenging to make a living solely with the earnings of a Copper-grade Bronze adventurer if you don’t get conveniently high-paying requests~.”
Right. It’s difficult to make ends meet with only bronze-tier requests.
The limited number of requests available for bronze-tier adventurers also limits the rewards. Of course, some adventurers manage to make a living by cleverly adjusting their schedules and accomplishing multiple requests simultaneously to compensate for the low reward amounts.
However, it still results in a frugal lifestyle.
We, too, are struggling with the financial woes typical of bronze-grade adventurers. So, I asked Charm-san if there was anything we could do about it. I even considered getting a part-time job in town.
But ideally, we wanted to focus on our adventurer activities. I thought that if there were well-paying requests in that field, it would be the best solution. So, I eagerly awaited Charm-san’s response.
“In that case~, how about trying to move your ‘activity base’ to a different location~?”
