- Chapter 19 - Maid with burning cheeks
After taking the medicine, Yuki Ohira fell asleep right away.
While she was sleeping, I borrowed her key and went to a nearby pharmacy to buy nutritional drinks and a cooling pad. When I came back, I slowly placed a cooling pad on her forehead to bring down her fever without waking her up. Although it quickly became hot, I thought it was better than nothing.
As I contemplated on leaving her alone or not, I wondered what to do with the keys. I considered leaving it in the mailbox or assuming there was a spare key somewhere, but if she couldn’t find one, it might cause a commotion. If I knew Yuki Ohira’s contact information, I could have notified her through LOIN, but I didn’t know her LOIN account. I couldn’t wake her up forcefully either because she needed to rest.
“Well… since I’m next door, it’s okay if I’m a little late,” I thought. She had fallen asleep at this hour, but she would probably wake up once before midnight. I could tell her about the key then.
I picked up my phone, thinking that I wouldn’t have a hard time killing time with it. But, suddenly, I remembered something.
“The Baseball equipment….”
I recalled a familiar enamel bag that I had asked Ohira to dispose of after summer vacation. My curiosity got the better of me, and I went back to the storage space in the hallway.
Underneath was an enamel bag, which I thought might belong to Ohira but it was actually my own. I knew it belonged to me, from the yellow embroidery that read “Morigami.”
I brought the enamel bag back to the room and opened it next to Ohira who was still sleeping on the bed. Inside was the same pitcher’s glove that I used in the past in my baseball matches.
As I gazed at the nostalgic glove, the familiar scent of leather, dirt, and sweat mixed together. It wasn’t a good smell, but I had no aversion to it since it was a familiar smell. Wearing the glove again after two years made me crave to play baseball again.
“I guess I can’t help but have some lingering feelings… Oh well… But I’m sorry. I’m already broken, so I can’t move forward if I keep clinging to the past. Even though we fought together in the world. I’m sorry…”
I slapped the gloves lightly, but suddenly a voice came from behind. “It’s surprising that you talk to your glove like that, Morigami-kun.”
As she got up, she didn’t seem as uncomfortable as earlier. However, she still had a fever, and her cheeks were red and flushed, which was oddly sexy.
“You saw an embarrassing part of me.”
“I don’t think it’s embarrassing. It was something important, right? Keeping it was the right choice.”
Right now, she had a mature look on her face, like she was watching the neighborhood boys playing baseball.
“Why didn’t you throw it away?”
It was a simple question. I wanted to know why she kept it when I asked her to throw it away.
“At the time, when you asked me to throw it away, Morigami-kun looked like he was in pain. It’s presumptuous of me, but I kept it with me just in case.”
“Huh, for real? Do my emotions show up that much on my face?”
“Yes. It was quite clear. But I won’t force you to tell me anything. I think we all have things from our past that we don’t want others to know.”
“That’s kind of you.”
I lightly stroked the glove, then put it back in my enamel bag and asked Ohira again.
“Whenever it’s convenient, could you please throw it away? I can’t really do it myself…”
“Sure, I’ll throw it away someday.”
The word “someday” was it after I talked about the past, or was it just a casual remark?
“Sorry. Did I wake you up by any chance?”
Either way, if I caused a sick person to wake up because of that, I would feel sorry.
“No, it wasn’t because of you, so Morigami-kun doesn’t need to worry.”
As she showed a smile that conveyed no ill will or discomfort towards the apology, Yuki Ohira looked in the opposite direction, towards the view outside the large window.
“By the way, how long did I sleep?”
The view outside the window had changed as the black tint covered the sky. The moon was now in full exposure with stars accompanying it.
“About an hour and a half.”
“Were you by my side the whole time?”
“I went out shopping and some other stuff, so not the whole time.”
“Shopping?” After voicing her doubts, she noticed the nutrition drink and the cooling pads stuck to her forehead near the bed, and let out a “Ah…”
“What about my fever?”
She asked me as she touched the cooling pad on her forehead, and then measured her body temperature with a thermometer under her arm.
“37.2°C“
I thought there was still a little more fever given how her cheeks were still burning hot, but…
“That’s good. It’s dropped a lot.”
Just sleeping for an hour and a half had caused it to drop so much, it was perhaps because she had accumulated a lot of fatigue.
“Was it because you were by my side, Morigami-kun?”
“Huh…?”
Her muttering voice would have been inaudible amidst the cityscape, but since it was a quiet room, it easily reached my ears.
“Oh… that’s not it.”
It was clear that she was flustered as her face turned red as if her fever had returned.
“That’s ironic, isn’t it? I never thought I would have my useless master take care of me. This is a shame that I will carry for the rest of my life.”
It seemed like she was trying to cover up her agitation with sarcasm, but it was too late. It was clear that her small muttering earlier was her true feelings.
I wanted to send teasing words to her as usual, but I judged that it wouldn’t be appropriate to do so with a sick person, so I brought up a serious topic.
“Isn’t it too much work for you after all?”
At the voice that expressed concern, she lowered her gaze.
“Yes, that’s right…”
She answered hesitantly and continued.
“In reality, I did collapse, and I caused you trouble. It’s certain that I need to reevaluate my current lifestyle.”
“That’s good.”
The student council work, the part-time job at the maid cafe, also taking care of me.
If she had to cut something, it would undoubtedly be taking care of me.
Honestly, it was quite helpful for her to clean and cook in my room, but I’m not enough of a devil to let her do it until she collapses. Besides, I have no intention of telling anyone under the contract not to reveal our secret.
So, if she had to cut something, it would be taking care of me.
“At least your fever has gone down.”
However, that is not something to decide now. What she needs to do is to get well, so I won’t say anything for the time being.
“I don’t think it’s good for either of us to stay too long, so I’ll be going home soon.”
“Yes, that’s right. It’s not good to transmit the illness.”
Both of us spoke words to be considerate of each other, then I turned to leave the room.
“Also, I don’t think of it as a nuisance. We’re helping each other out, so if anything happens, just come over. We’re next to each other, so don’t hesitate to ask.”
With a little bit of reluctance, she replied, “Yes.”
“Okay then. I’ll leave the key in the postbox at the entrance, so please pick it up.”
Saying that, I raised my hand over my back and left the room.
“Thank you very much…”
I thought I heard a small voice from the room I had just left.
