- Chapter 17 - Its not because of the sunset that my face is red!
Come to think of it, I really forgot about it
My middle school friend, Yoshiki Kishihara, had asked me about the schedule for our school’s cultural festival. Well, since he’s always busy, I think it’s okay not to reply immediately, but if I remembered, it would be okay to reply to him now.
September has already passed into its later phase, and the sound of cicadas gradually stopped coming. However, the sunlight is so hot that it reminds me of summer, so it will still be a while before we switch to autumn clothes.
As I entered the classroom, I was already sweating heavily as if I was doing a warm-up exercise before arriving at the school. The temperature of our classroom was 27 degrees which was relatively hotter than normal.
It hasn’t been long since the seat change, so I headed to my seat, which I wasn’t used to yet. There, Yuki Ohira, who was reading something like a book with a cool expression, had already arrived at the seat behind me.
I wanted to ask her about the schedule for the cultural festival, so I stood up and looked at her with my school bag on the desk.
What she was holding in her hand was not a book but a notebook.
“What’s up?”
She closed the notebook with a snap and put it on the desk. Then she looked at me. I wonder if the kindergarten kids are taught to look at the other person’s eyes when talking to anyone. She was currently looking straight into my eyes with her usual glare.
But her cheeks were slightly red giving her a cute appearance.
“Being handsome is a sin.”
I joked and brushed my bangs aside, saying something arrogant.
“Is Morigami-kun in the handsome category?”
“Don’t take it seriously.”
I said it as a joke, but she asked me seriously, and I didn’t know how to answer, so I sat down for the time being.
“No, I’m not. My sense of beauty is dull compared to others. I honestly don’t know who is cool or cute.”
“I just said it casually. I just got carried away because Ohira’s face was red. Stop it.”
“My face is red?”
She unconsciously put her hand on her own cheek.
“I don’t know myself. However, if you think I’m blushing because I’m looking at you, that’s a misunderstanding.”
“I know. That’s complete nonsense.”
To be honest, for now, I can’t imagine she would be looking at me and blushing in embarrassment.
“So, what do you want? You didn’t come all the way here just to tell me that joke, did you?”
She even told me not to talk to her so casually at school, so if my only purpose in coming here was to joke around, getting scolded was inevitable.
“I want to know the detailed schedule for this year’s culture festival.”
“Oh, the culture festival? Please wait a moment.”
As she said that, she opened her planner that she had put on her desk earlier. “Let’s see…” she whispered softly and stopped at a page of her planner.
“It’s on November 12th and 13th.”
“On November 12th and 13th. Okay got it.”
After I received the information, I made a note of it on my smartphone and she chuckled when she noticed me taking notes of it.
“Oh, sorry. I was just surprised.”
“What about?”
“You’re someone who enjoys school events, aren’t you, Morigami-kun?”
“Well, you’d be missing out if you didn’t have fun at school events. They’re just for fun, after all. You have to give it your all when it comes to it.”
“But still, the teachers will be making announcements soon, and yet you still came to me to ask specifically about the dates. You must be really excited.”
“Well, a friend of mine from middle school wants to come as well.”
Since there was nothing to hide, I revealed the content of my question honestly.
“I didn’t get the impression that you were close to anyone other than Konoe-kun at school, but are you the type of person who has a lot of friends outside of school?”
“I’m the type with few friends to begin with. Don’t make me say it, it’s depressing.”
“I see. So, is that friend of yours a girl or something?”
“Do you really think that would be the case?”
“No, I don’t think so.”
Without hesitation, she continued after a brief pause.
“Well, there’s no way you could get a girlfriend, could you? Anyone who falls for you must be a real oddball.”
“That’s harsh, isn’t it?”
“It’s a valid response.”
What a brutal thing to say. Maybe she’s just in a bad mood.
I didn’t want to get any more involved with her, as my heart couldn’t handle any more than it already had. So, I just thanked her for the information and turned to leave.
At that moment, I thought I heard a cough from the seat behind me.

“Ah, I did it, I did it! I’ve broken my record today,” said Shogo, after we finished eating at the sushi restaurant near our school.
Shogo and I often hang out after school. Sometimes we go to places where we can move our bodies, like karaoke or bowling alleys. Other times, like today, we go to restaurants. Most of the time, we end up at ramen shops, but today we went to a sushi shop.
“How can you eat that much when you’re not even in a sports club?” I asked Shogo, as we left the restaurant and walked along the sidewalk on the national highway. I was exasperated and checked our receipt again.
“We used to be on the baseball team, and eating is what baseball players do,” Shogo replied.
‘
“It’s not too late to start doing judo or sumo.
“If Akira does it, I’ll do it too.”
“Can you even imagine me doing that?” I asked.
“No, I can’t,” Shogo laughed and slapped my back.
“Well, it’s not like you have to do club activities. This kind of afterschool time is good too. It’s way more fun than I imagined when I decided not to join a club in middle school.”
“Yeah, you’re right. Maybe it’s all thanks to you.”
“Wow, you’re actually thanking me properly. Maybe it’ll snow today.”
“That would be really funny.”
We continued our conversation until we arrived at my apartment building.
“Alright, see you tomorrow, Akira,” Shogo said, waving his hand and he started walking towards the north. He commutes by train, and the station is in the north.
That’s usually how we disperse when we hang out near school.
The current time was 6:21 pm.
The sunset was gradually getting earlier these days. Even so, it was still bright outside. I like how long the days are in summer.
As I took out my keys to enter my apartment, I noticed something was off.
“Haah… I was careless,” I muttered to myself.
The key to the automatic lock had a cute cat keychain attached and was left inserted into the lock. Who could have done such a thing?
Maybe a drunk person?
Regardless, I couldn’t enter the building since the front door and my apartment key were the same.
As it was meaningless to have an auto-lock if the key was left in it, I was pondering what to do after taking out the key.
“Excuse me.”
I heard a familiar voice.
“Ohira.”
Out of the apartment came Yuki Ohira in her school uniform.
Her face was flushed red, perhaps due to the reflection of the sunset, but I could not be more wrong about it.
“Oh, it’s you…”
“Is that yours, Ohira?”
I asked, showing her the cat keychain, to which she nodded.
As I knew she was a resident of the apartment, I was sure that the key belonged to her and handed it over.
“It’s not like you, Ohira, to leave the auto-lock key open and unattended. Did you not realize that you left it hanging at the entrance?”
“Yes… When I tried to open the door, it wasn’t there… But when I was inside the apartment, I tried searching for it so… I knew it had to be here…”
“Lucky I found it before something bad could have happened to you.”
I said in a sarcastic tone that almost felt like a retort, and she easily shrugged it off with a smile.
She was good at ignoring things.
As Ohira and I were on the same fifth floor, we got on the elevator together. The elevator had stopped on the first floor, which must have been when Ohira had entered it earlier, so we were able to get on immediately.
That’s when I noticed something.
“Are you feeling okay?”
As we got on the elevator, her flushed face stood out. I thought it was just the reflection of the sunset earlier, but it seemed to be something else. I could also tell she was breathing harder, so I asked worriedly.
“I’m just feeling a little tired. That’s all.”
“Really?”
“Yes. It’s not bad enough to make you worry about me.”
She said as we arrived on the fifth floor, and as she tried to get out of the elevator.
“Ah…”
Her foot got caught between the space of the elevator and the floor, and she nearly fell.
“Whoa!”
I quickly supported her with my arm.
At that moment, I could tell through her uniform that she was sweating profusely and had a high fever.
“Someone who’s okay wouldn’t almost fall in the elevator, nor would they get this hot.”
“I-I’m…fine…”
“You’re not fine. I’ll take you to your bed. Give me your key.”
I said in a serious tone, and as she was perhaps at her limit, she obediently handed me her key.
I received the key from her and supported her as we entered Yuki Ohira’s room.
