- Chapter 16 - Meddlesome Master
“I’m sorry. I’ve been busy and haven’t been able to do my job as your exclusive maid.”
Yuki Ohira dressed in her maid outfit came into the room and apologized
Just a few hours ago, I think I received some harsh words about not talking with her at the school.
She looked at me with a sharp gaze as she saw my face.
“Don’t misunderstand me. This isn’t school, and I didn’t come here because I wanted to. I only came because I had some free time, and I’m just faithfully keeping my contract. So, please don’t think about anything else.”
“Is that so?”
I replied casually as it didn’t really matter to me much, she then looked around my room with the same sharp gaze.
“My master is such a kind person who gives work to his maids.”
I could feel that this was her way of making a roundabout insult.
“What are you trying to say?”
“Even though it hasn’t been that long since I cleaned, what’s with this room?”
She frowned and crossed her arms.
“A clean room is always good, right? Hmm.”
“That’s not the point!”
It seems like she misunderstood.
Yuki Ohira squatted down and picked up my T-shirt that had fallen on the floor.
“Please put your clothes in the closet or hang it somewhere.”
“I’m the type who rarely opens the closet.”
“How can you be so lazy!”
She said those words in a sharp tone, and deftly folded my T-shirt in mid-air.
“And this convenience store bento container! Put it in the garbage bin when you finish eating!”
“I’m the type who doesn’t have a garbage bin at home.”
“Then please buy one!”
She said those words in a sharp tone again and took out a 40-liter garbage bag, quickly disposing of the trash on the dining table.
“Even though it hasn’t been that long since I cleaned, how can you make this room so dirty? In a way, it’s a talent.”
“I never knew I had a hidden talent.”
“Shall I clean it up for you? Your head, that is.”
She tried to wipe my head with a used cloth, but I politely declined her offer.
Since it was still relatively clean compared to what it was during the summer vacation, the remaining cleaning was finished relatively faster.
“I thought about it when I was cleaning, but are you really okay with only eating convenience store food every day? What about the money?”
Yuki Ohira’s words were not wrong at all.
While there was a concern for nutrition when relying solely on convenience store food, money was also an issue. As a growing high school student, I spend more than 500 yen per meal at the convenience store. I don’t eat breakfast, but spending over 1,000 yen for lunch and dinner adds up. A simple calculation shows that food expenses of over 30,000 yen per month would be painful for a high school student living alone.
“I do get an allowance from my parents, but… Honestly, it’s a tough situation,” I said.
“An allowance?… That’s quite the privileged position you’re in,” she replied with a snort and then sighed softly, offering some words of advice.
“Don’t rely on your parents. I can live on my own without anyone’s help.”
From her statement, one can easily imagine that there are some family circumstances at play here. Perhaps there are complicated family issues behind her situation. I don’t want to ask her about it, and even if I did, she would probably just brush it off.
“You’re capable of doing household chores, and you work at a maid cafe to earn money. You are already capable of living alone in this expensive world huh.”
I could infer that the reason she worked part-time was to live on her own without relying on her parents’ allowance. But I wondered if she had informed the school and had considered working at a cafe or a convenience store.
But then again, it might be related to why she likes wearing maid outfits.
Balancing her love for her favorite things and a peaceful school life, she chose what she loved. Now that I had discovered her secret, if someone were to find out and tell others, she would no longer be able to live on her own without her parents’ allowance. She hoped that I would keep her secret.
However, looking at her daily schedule, it seemed like her life was incredibly busy.
“But really, I might be meddling too much, but aren’t you working too hard? As the student council president and a maid, on top of taking care of me, it must be a huge burden. You don’t have to push yourself too hard, you know?”
“That’s really meddling. Especially since you’re pretending to live on your own,” she replied with a sharp retort.
I received an unsparing blow. I couldn’t find any room to counterattack.
“I’ve been living like this for the past two years. I’ve never had any health issues, and it’s become a normal routine for me, so there’s no hardship,” she said.
Certainly, if it becomes routine, even things that others might find burdensome, are not actually difficult for someone who has experienced it, and not doing it would feel unpleasant, like having an unbrushed mouth. I can clearly understand that feeling.
“If I’m taking care of your trouble, it’s no problem at all. After all, a contract is a contract. If you don’t reveal my secret, it’s a small price to pay.”
She said it firmly with a dignified expression, but then muttered softly.
“I can’t quit my job at the maid cafe.”
Even in that small muttering, there was something like conviction.
“Would you like to make a request for tonight’s dinner, meddlesome master?”
She changed the subject as if she had talked too much about her personal life.
“I’ll make anything you like. It’s a contract, and if you keep eating convenience store bento every day, I’m afraid you’ll become malnourished.”
Behind her helpless words, I felt a warmth like she was really worried about me.
“Please, anything you want, I can make it for you. I have ingredients in my house, so I think I can make just about anything.”
That was probably a sarcastic remark about the fact that there was nothing in my refrigerator, but it was true, so I could only smile wryly.
“If that’s the case, then I’ll just leave it to the maid.”
“Very well. Then I’ll make tonight’s dinner using ingredients from my house.”
She happily went to her apartment to bring the ingredients for the dinner.
Since I don’t usually eat home-made cooking, it was really delicious.
It’s been a while since I had a dinner with high nutritional value. This maid is really an outstanding cook.
