An Ordinary High School Girl (cross-dressed).
I couldn’t possibly say, “Actually, can I cancel that?” At this point, despair filled my chest.
What even is a Caramel Cream Cappuccino?
From the name alone, it sounds like a drink with layers of sweetness piled on top of each other, resulting in an overwhelmingly sugary concoction.
And it costs 600 yen. That’s pretty expensive.
Is this really popular with high school girls?
But I’m a guy. Ordering something like this is… no, wait, right now I’m supposed to be a girl, so it’s not weird, it’s actually appropriate?
But inside I’m still a guy…???
I’m losing track of what’s right and what’s wrong.
The only thing I’m certain of is that encountering my roommate like this would be disastrous.
I need to drink this quickly and leave as soon as possible. That’s the plan.
“…Sorry for the wait.”
With a lifeless voice, the waitress placed my drink on the table.
The Caramel Cream Cappuccino, with its cream swirled on top and glistening with caramel sauce, looked like an explosion of sweetness. Just looking at it made me feel queasy.
Is this really popular with high school girls? It’s not just sweet; it’s a calorie monster. I can’t imagine it being anything but overwhelmingly sweet.
“Thank you ver…y… much!?”
As I tried to thank the waitress, my mouth stretched awkwardly to the side. My cheeks felt like they had locked in place.
“…Is something wrong?”
Her voice was polite but devoid of any real concern.
Standing there, the waitress tried to hide her ample chest, which couldn’t be fully concealed even by her apron, with a round tray. It was none other than my roommate, Sajou-san, with whom I had just started living recently.
The unexpected timing left me speechless.
Did she recognize me? Did she?
Her gaze seemed distant, as if she was staring through me, making it impossible to read her emotions or thoughts.
At home, I might have been able to read her better, but here, my own panic and her formal demeanor made it difficult.
Even though it was her first part-time job, she didn’t seem nervous at all.
“…N-no. I’m fine.”
I forced my voice to sound higher and lighter, and she replied, “I see,” before walking away without much fuss.
Her lack of friendliness made me question her suitability as a waitress.
“…Haah.”
I let out a deep sigh of relief as I watched Sajou-san retreat behind the register counter.
For once, her lack of friendliness was a blessing.
She didn’t notice, right? Right?
Her detached reaction made it hard to believe she had seen through my disguise.
If she had recognized me, she would have definitely said something like, “What are you doing?” with obvious irritation, or “What is that? Gross,” and insulted me in my drag. Just imagining her scornful gaze and voice made my spine shiver. If just the thought of it was this bad, hearing it in reality would be unbearable.
Was I lucky or unlucky?
Fortunately, it seemed that Sajou-san hadn’t realized who I was.
Despite my doubts, my classmate’s skills in the fashion club were top-notch. Her abilities in cross-dressing—or rather, disguise—were surprisingly impressive. Though it felt strange to be thankful for such a specific talent, I had to appreciate it now.
I should thank her later. Maybe with a Caramel Cream Cappuccino, since it’s popular with high school girls?
Since my disguise seemed to be working, I decided to switch to my original mission of watching over Sajou-san’s first part-time job.
I scooped some cream with the overly long silver spoon. As I tasted it, the overwhelming sweetness made me want to stick out my tongue, but I had to maintain my role as a girl. Smiling, I said, “Oh, it’s delicious! I love sweet things!” and tried to act like a typical high school girl.
What exactly is typical high school girl behavior? I didn’t know, being a guy inside, but I tried my best to act carefree and not look back.
I wanted to make sure I didn’t dwell on this cross-dressing experience in the future either.
For now, I decided to take some pictures of my ridiculously sweet cappuccino for social media, acting like a bubbly high school girl. Even though I had already started eating, I took some photos with my phone, trying to capture the essence of a high school girl.
As I pretended to be absorbed in taking photos and eating sweets, I discreetly observed the café.
The sun was setting soon. The sunset chime had just finished ringing, and the view outside the window was of a dark sidewalk and road. There were few pedestrians reflected in the glass, and cars with headlights on were busily passing by.
It was a bit off from dinner time, so the café was relatively empty.
Reassured by the lack of customers that I hadn’t noticed upon entering due to my anxiety and nervousness, I took a good look around the place.
There were only five tables and no counter seats, likely due to the prefab structure.
Still, the fact that even those few seats weren’t filled made me worry about the café’s viability. It didn’t seem like they had the luxury to hire new part-timers.
On the bright side, there were no male customers, which was a bit comforting. Though it was probably just coincidence, it seemed like the café catered mostly to women. This meant less chance of unwanted attention or encounters with sleazy guys.
I gently exhaled a sigh of relief, my thinly padded chest rising and falling with the breath, as I turned my attention back to Sajou-san standing at the register.
Did she have any motivation at all?
Inside the register counter, she stood still, almost like a quiet cat. When the employee who had greeted me earlier came out from behind the counter, she began explaining the register’s operation while fiddling with it.
“Is everything clear so far?”
“Yes,” Sajou-san nodded.
Her response was sluggish, though, and overall, she seemed very detached. The contrast between her and the animated employee explaining things to her was stark. Sajou-san’s lack of reaction made me wonder if she was even fully conscious. Watching her, I felt a growing sense of anxiety.
At least take notes, even if it’s just for show. Standing there like a statue makes you seem unengaged and disinterested.
Of course, I knew Sajou-san wasn’t slacking off. She had volunteered for this, and despite her seemingly indifferent attitude, I knew she was diligent.
But that kind of commitment doesn’t come across to someone meeting her for the first time. Sajou-san’s demeanor was just her way, but it wouldn’t hurt to at least act a bit more engaged.
“That’s it for the explanation. Any questions?”
“No.”
Sajou-san’s curt reply was met with a cheerful smile from the employee, who praised her quick learning.
Was everything really okay?!
Her too-quick responses were making me uneasy. My stomach, already upset from the overly sweet drink, clenched with nerves. Watching her, I felt like a parent observing their child on their first errand. I rubbed my aching belly as the employee clapped her hands together and said, “Alright, let’s give it a try.”
Wait, is she going straight into practice? No more rehearsal?
“Yes,” Sajou-san replied calmly.
At that moment, a stylish woman in a suit who had been sitting by the window drinking coffee approached the register with her check. “Can I get the bill, please?” she said, handing it to Sajou-san.
I watched nervously as Sajou-san took the check and prepared to handle her first transaction. I couldn’t help but feel worried.
