Going to school together with the too-good-looking neighbor. Part -1.
“What about your belongings?”
“Nothing… Oh, my keys.”
After finishing breakfast and getting ready for school, we left the house together.
Despite a minor oversight, there were no major issues, although I was met with a disapproving glance from Sajou-san for forgetting the keys.
I hurried back to retrieve the keys from the room.
I didn’t even spare a moment to bend down at the entrance, crushing the heels of my sneakers as I dashed out again.
“Found them!”
“…Make sure to wear your shoes properly.”
“Just a second,” I said as I returned, receiving a scolding from Sajou-san with a furrowed brow.
I tapped the floor lightly with my toes, inserted the key I had been holding, and locked the door. Balancing on one foot, I slipped my fingers into the squashed heels and lifted them up, then did the same with the other one.
“Don’t be lazy.”
“Sorryyyy.”
I apologized but discreetly averted my gaze from the increasingly narrowed eyes of Sajou-san. I murmured softly, “Sorry,” and she let out a sigh.
Sajou-san reached out to the door and rattled it to ensure it was properly closed.
Seeing her do this, I couldn’t help but think that she seemed quite reliable or surprisingly grounded despite her disheveled appearance and resignation. Yeah, she’s reliable.
I took a few steps away.
Normally, we would be seen off in front of Sajou-san’s apartment, which was adjacent, but today was different.
We just passed by and walked together down the hallway to the elevator.
Every morning, we waited alone for the elevator. However, today, Sajou-san in her school uniform was standing next to me.
With her distinctive black hair and eyes like dark voids devoid of light, even in her school uniform, her impressive curves were still prominent, often captivating.
Am I really going to school shoulder to shoulder with such a beautiful girl?
She usually comes to pick me up on the way back. But today, she didn’t.
Is that why my heart is fluttering?
The elevator arrived, and the doors opened.
Even as we boarded, I couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of unease as I watched her back. When Sajou-san turned around, our eyes met.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” I shook my head.
Because I didn’t have an answer to her question either.
***
Mid-July, after the end of the rainy season.
The sky is a clear blue, the weather crisp and dry.
Like an early announcer of summer’s arrival, a lone early cicada chirps among the other cicadas.
It’s that kind of season.
Walking to school with a beautiful girl.
Just hearing that makes me think of boys’ fantasies or youthful dreams. A scene from adolescence. Ah, the blue spring.
But that doesn’t mean there’ll be any heart-pounding, bittersweet events.
There’s no conversation, just walking along the white fence that separates the sidewalk from the road.
We’re walking together to school… well, not exactly side by side. I walk ahead, and she follows three steps behind.
From the outside, it might look like the idealized image of a traditional Japanese woman, a Yamato Nadeshiko. But well, Sajou-san is anything but that. I wouldn’t dare say it aloud; I’d definitely get scolded if I did.
So if someone asked what she’s like, I’d struggle to answer. Honestly, I don’t really know.
“Sajou-san? Aren’t you a bit far back?”
“…Am I? Seems normal to me.”
A nonchalant reply. What’s normal anyway?
I meant to subtly ask if she wanted to walk together, but either it didn’t get through or she understood and decided to ignore it completely. Hmm. She’s chillingly indifferent with her reaction.
But that doesn’t mean the atmosphere is bad or anything.
I think Sajou-san probably prefers this distance… I guess. I have no real proof.
If her reason for maintaining this distance is to avoid rumors about us dating or something, my pillow will be soaking wet tonight. But that’s probably not it.
Sajou-san doesn’t care about what others think. If she did, she wouldn’t bother visiting my classroom during lunchtime just to deliver my lunch. QED. Case closed. My pillow tonight will be bone dry.
It’s puzzling. At home, we’re much closer, which makes this distance feel even more noticeable.
