Episode 29: We Don’t Want to Study
“Well done, gathering here, Akira, Shinji.” “Hmph, I figured it was about time you’d summon us, Rei.”
“…By the way, did you need to make the room this dark?”
Click. The sound of a switch echoed. The karaoke room was immediately flooded with bright light, and the drinks on the table from the self-serve bar sparkled under it.
After finishing our supplementary classes, we ended up in a karaoke place near the station. It was still early in the afternoon, so there were plenty of empty rooms.
“By the way, today was supposed to be about exam prep, right? So why this place?”
“Akira, stay calm and listen. My room right now… I can’t be certain what’s hidden there.”
“Huh? Hidden what?” “Bugging devices, hidden cameras, et cetera. If it were just me, it wouldn’t be a big deal.”
“Uh, that’s already a huge deal. Are you okay? Seriously.”
“I’m fine. It’s all just another form of love!”
Akira’s face contorted in disbelief. It seemed he was genuinely worried about my mental state.
“Well, putting that aside, we’re in a pretty dire situation, don’t you think? Exams are one thing my muscles can’t solve.”
No kidding, considering you’ve lost more often than not lately. To point it out would make me feel like a jerk, so I refrained.
“Sigh… If you guys studied properly, there wouldn’t be any problem…”
“We don’t want to study!” Shinji and I shouted with all our might.
“Think about it, Akira. Our university has a strangely high average academic standard, right?”
“Well, yeah. It’s classified as a decently good school.”
“Exactly! We already crossed that line—through the hard work we put in during high school! And yet? We get into university and it’s just more studying? Come on, no one wants that!”
“Rei, I think you should apologize to your parents.” Damn it, playing the good guy, are you? You’re no better—you act like a complete idiot during mixers!
“Honestly, can I just leave now? I thought this was going to be a proper study session, but clearly, it’s not.”
“No, no, in a way, this is a study session, Akira.” Shinji pulled a sheet of paper from his backpack.
“This is a list of the courses we three are taking. From that, I’ve highlighted the ones with exams instead of reports.”
The fluorescent pen glided across the page.”English II, bookkeeping, European history. These are manageable. Why? Because we can bring in textbooks and lecture notes.”
“Yeah, true.” “The problem is this.”
Shinji pointed decisively at one course.
“Managerial Sociology.” “It’s not that hard, is it? It’s just applying stuff we learned in high school…”
“You idiot! Anything we learned in high school was flushed out of our brains long ago!”
Exactly. That’s how most university students are. The peak of their academic ability is right after graduating high school.
“How did you two not fail last year?” “Exactly, Akira!”
“Uh… yeah?” “How did we, two idiots, make it to our second year? The answer!”
“Don’t tell me you two were cheating…” “Wrong! It’s much simpler than that. In fact…”
Shinji and I exchanged a knowing look and nodded.
“─Bribery!” “…So, yeah. What do you think about that?”
“Hm. I didn’t realize Uhana was that much of an idiot. That said, I have something to ask you as well.”
“Uh, what is it?” “Why are you here?”
In the clubroom of the Wind Studies Society, Akira had shown up to see Kanata Utakata.
The clubroom, more like a personal living space, was absurdly well-equipped: air conditioning, a kotatsu, a reclining sofa for naps, and a large round table. Honestly, it was better than the clubroom I belonged to.
“Well, you know… I wanted to play Nokémon cards.”
“Really!?” “Of course. I even brought two decks this time.”
“I see. Then I shall host you accordingly.” Suddenly in a great mood, Kanata began tapping rapidly on their phone.
A few minutes later, the door opened. “I’m here, Utakata.”
Nikaido appeared, holding a plastic bag. “Did you bring the stuff?”
“Yeah, I got it. Here.” Nikaido placed the bag on the table. Inside were a mountain of snacks and drinks.
“By the way, I’ve been wondering, what’s your relationship with him?”
Akira asked. Although he’d seen Kanata a few times before, Nikaido was almost always there too.
“Ah, Nikaido and I are cousins. Same age, though. To me, he’s like a hopeless little brother.”
“Hey, what are you saying? I was born three months before you, so you’re the troublesome little sister.”
“Wow?” Despite being blood-related, their visual contrast was striking, like heaven and hell. Probably to avoid misunderstandings, they used their last names with each other.
“Isaka, I heard you play Nokémon cards?”
“Yeah, kind of…” Honestly, I couldn’t even remember why I started playing. Thinking about it made my head hurt.
“Anyway, take care of this one, will you? He seems desperate for opponents.”
After saying that, Nikaido left the room. Clang. The sound of the heavy door closing reverberated through the space.
“Tch, he’s always acting smug just because he was born three months earlier.”
“Well, that’s just how it is.” “You’re not showing me much respect either, huh?”
Honestly, even if someone told me Kanata was older, it wouldn’t feel right. Their petite stature and excitement over Nokémon cards made them seem like a middle schooler.
“Whatever. Let’s play!” Yep, at times like this, their expression was more childlike than a middle schooler’s.
“Wait, before that, there’s something I want to ask. I trust your knowledge on this.”
“O-oh? Ask away! Ahem!” Seriously, no third-year university student says “ahem” to sound important.
“It’s more like… do you happen to know what the Managerial Sociology professor likes?”
The room fell silent. Kanata blinked a few times before responding.
“Huh?” Well, yeah, that reaction made sense.
