Vol 1 Chapter 29 – Discovery
“Is there really a trace of someone working behind the scenes in these northern wastes?”
“Probably.”
After hearing information from the bandits, I rested for one night, then flew out into the northern wastes with Tail and began searching for traces of others.
“There are far too many monsters spawning in the northern wastes. It’s a situation that can only be described as abnormal. So I think someone’s probably working behind the scenes. Yesterday, I wiped out an unbelievable number of monsters. Yet monsters keep spawning. The numbers are clearly wrong.”
The northern wastes had originally been land where many monsters lived.
But even so, there were an unbelievable number of monsters in the current northern wastes. On top of that, it wasn’t normal for all those monsters to head in a straight line toward one place.
There was definitely some kind of trick to it.
Was that trick by human hands? Or was it monsters—some special monster born through sudden mutation?
It was quite difficult to tell, but this time, thanks to the bandits, I had confirmation.
“…That is true. We defeated a considerable number of monsters before you arrived, Noah. Even so, the wave of monsters never stopped.”
“Right? It’s clearly strange. The empty space in the northern wastes is from my magic. If we’re going to find traces, it’s now or never.”
“Hmm… searching, huh?”
“That’s all we can do.”
With Tail as my escort, I activated magic to search this entire wasteland.
The northern wastes were vast.
Obviously it wouldn’t be found so easi—
“Found it.”
“What!? That was fast!?”
What the hell, it was closer than I thought. Did they need to create a base in the direction the rampaging monsters were heading when giving them directionality?
“Tail. We’re charging in, okay?”
“Yeah, I won’t let anything touch you, Noah.”
“Yep. I’m counting on you.”
Nodding at Tail’s words, I snapped my fingers and activated transfer magic with Tail, moving us to the airspace above the base I’d found.
“The hell…!?”
“Magic Cannon.”
Then I fired the magic cannon at the ground, blowing away the earth and exposing the base that had been built underground to the sunlight.
“Witch Cultists again!”
Inside the base exposed to the sun—
Witch Cultists were there. Apparently this matter was another Witch Cult case.
Just how many places I went would these bastards be? I was starting to lose my patience. Yep.
“Let’s go, Tail. We’re blowing up that base right now.”
“Wait! Don’t go charging ahead!”
Annoying Witch Cultists.
To crush them, I dove straight down from the air to the ground.
Vol 1 Chapter 30 – Suppression
Last time I clashed with Witch Cultists, I had to fight a dragon.
But this time was different. This time I’d completely cut off their escape route. The Witch Cultists couldn’t escape from inside the base that I’d punched through from above and exposed to the sun.
“…”
“…”
“…”
Under my attacks striking from the air, the Witch Cultists were just being toyed with and killed.
“You’re all silent again!”
The Witch Cultists’ resistance was feeble.
Even as their comrades were killed one after another and they themselves were about to be killed, the Witch Cultists remained silent and said nothing.
Just beating down the Witch Cultists with no escape. The current situation was far better than that forest.
“There’s no point in needlessly provoking them, Noah. It doesn’t matter what you say to Witch Cultists.”
And on top of that, Tail was beside me. Without exaggeration, this was easy mode.
The important part was what came next.
“No, I just thought it’d feel more like a battle if there were some dialogue.”
“I think staying silent gives more of a ‘fighting a strong opponent’ feel, you know? In reality, there’s almost no exchange of words when fighting strong opponents. Just from each other’s movements, you can tell what the other is thinking—”
“…No, first of all, I can’t communicate with opponents like that.”
All I could do was magic.
I could easily converse with magic, but there was no way I could do the veteran warrior conversation thing. I was an intellectual, after all.
I wanted to fully enjoy this other world… I wanted to live in this world as a protagonist. I wanted something like an anime protagonist. If I was going to fight, I wanted it flashy, and I wanted to talk a lot so readers could easily understand.
Wasn’t a long silent standoff boring?
“Alright. That’s the last one.”
After carrying on truly pointless small talk with Tail, we finished wiping out all the Witch Cultists.
I didn’t take any prisoners. I knew it would be meaningless anyway.
There were many examples of capturing Witch Cultists—members of the rampaging Witch Cult—but not once had it ever been useful.
Torturing Witch Cultists to make them talk was pointless. These bastards never said anything.
Where they spawned from, what purpose they moved with—everything about the Witch Cult was shrouded in mystery.
“Let’s search, I guess.”
In that Witch Cult hideout, I began searching the interior with Tail.
There was no way this was the only Witch Cult hideout. There had to be more… which was why we were searching.
“Found it. Information on the Witch Cultists.”
It might not be here.
I’d been searching while considering that possibility, but after turning over everything in the hideout, I discovered the Witch Cultists’ operation plans that had been strictly locked with magic.
