- Chap 10 - The Summoning of the Heroes: A Difficult Decision - Heroes
With the beginning of a series of demonic invasions, the King had taken steps to request the use of the Ancient Spell for summoning new Heroes.
This decision arrived as a surprise to everyone, since the domain of Summoning Magic for Heroes was something extremely difficult and was mastered by a surprisingly small number of wizards.
The King searched the entire Kingdom until he found someone capable of performing the spell. After a few months of internal meetings within the castle, the use of the spell was approved.
A/N (I cannot allow the summoning to be easy since it could be used for anything and not just an emergency.)
The group of Heroes was made up of three summoned humans and other two from the Hunnaeland Kingdom. It was done in order to avoid fighting with the patriotic part of the Kingdom and to encourage children to join Magic Schools or Military Academies.
I could say that this tactic worked well for me and my friend Charlie because it became our greatest dream to be part of the Heroes Party.
At first, we trained in the waStelland, since I would rather not ask my father for help with a silly request. He would have made me stop going to the Academy. The Academy was where the King’s soldiers were trained, and I wanted to be a Hero.
I also couldn’t ask my mother because she worked all day at home and outside cleaning. I wanted to avoid worrying her. So, I decided to train during the vacant lots.
Three months have passed by and I saw no sign of improvement. I am not feeling any stronger.
I decided to ask Charlie for some tips, and he immediately took me to where he was training.
The training camp was located in an isolated area of the Kingdom, but not far away was a green field that stretched as far as the eye could see. Trees so beautiful that they could not be described in words surrounded the field.
“How did you find this place?”
I couldn’t help but ask, given that I had just witnessed something so beautiful.
“Do you see all this scenery?”
Charlie gazed forward with a serene expression.
“I do.”
“I have a secret to share with you, it’s about my family.”
“Really?”
I was completely surprised as thoughts about him being from a rich family and owning all this land popped up in my mind.
“Of course not, you must have faith in everything anyway.”
Charlie chuckled as he replied.
“Damn you!”
And just like that, the sound of glass shattering reverberated in my mind.
“I’m just kidding, my sister showed me this land years ago.”
Charlie sounded sad in his reply.
“Anyway, let’s get going to practice.”
Sensing the atmosphere, I had other questions but was unsure how to ask them.
Our training began with a mock battle, and Charlie was the one talking.
“If you are the chosen one, I will be happy. After all, it’s not every day that my friend does something useful.”
During our training, Charlie would often distract me with a joke or a pinprick.
“It would be better than a crybaby like you.”
Even though I knew he intended to distract and defeat me, I always responded to the insult. This was because his plan always worked.
But I didn’t care, what was important to me was having fun with my friend and both of us fulfilling our great dream of joining the Heroes.
Everything was going perfectly until the day of the convocation, when it would be decided who would be the two people to join the Heroes.
Charlie and a girl adept in Healing Magic were chosen.
When I attempted to congratulate him on his achievement, I was blocked by a guard, so I was forced to return home.
Months passed, and I had no further contact with my friend. In the time that I lost training, I also lost a year of the Academy. Damn, now I had to go to that snob school since it was the only one that would accept me.
My father wanted me to attend the Academy, but now he could only enroll me as a repeating student. The worst part was that the Academy divided students by social class so that no one noticed. I would certainly be seen as a commoner.
Said and done, even on the first day, I was put to eat near the commoners and a half-cat maid.
No one appeared to be bothered by her presence, at least no one showed it on the surface. However, when the Hero saw her, he immediately came out to confront her.
“Get out of that school now, dirty girl!”
The Hero angrily said.
“No.”
The girl replied without showing any changes in her mood.
When the Hero heard, he immediately took his sword and pointed it at the girl, who continued with the same serene countenance.
Everyone else at the table had left, except for me and the girl.
Given the direction things were heading, I should try to calm things down.
“Fighting is not allowed in school.”
I was giving it my all, but the Hero’s strength surpassed mine by far.
When the Hero attempted to attack us, a boy stood in his way.
“I am glad I was around.”
The boy said.
“Master!”
Said the girl with a happy expression.
The boy overcame the Hero easily, as one would expect from someone who had just picked up a sword.
As soon as the Hero was disarmed, a girl appeared with hair as big and black as a starless night, eyes thirsting for blood and a face covered in fury. She then kicked him, while cursing him.
“Who will be punished? I’m guessing it would be the child who didn’t raise his sword. After all, one is the maid of the Queen’s adopted son, one is his girlfriend and the other is the Hero.”
“I bet the maid will be quietly punished by the Queen.”
These were the whispers of the people around me.
Damn, what have I gotten myself into?
