Chapter 5 – “Can I call you Ao-kun?”
The Kirishima family currently consists of three people.
Thanks to Mom’s hard work, Shuka and I can live a comfortable life.
My mother is apparently a fairly successful author, but she says that more money is better, so she works at a snack bar at night.
Because she’s already out of the house by seven o’clock in the evening, it’s usually just Shuka and I eating dinner together.
Since Mom is busy with work, Shuka takes care of the housework and cooking.
She’s been doing it since she was in elementary school, so now she says she can’t relax without it.
I randomly turned on a channel and a variety show was playing, with comedians making jokes around town.
On the dining table were stir-fried vegetables and stews. It goes without saying that the food tastes delicious. They were even better than Mom’s cooking.
“Ah, that’s right.”
When the casual conversation we were having came to a stop, Shuka suddenly murmured as if she remembered something.
“What’s wrong? Did you forget you had homework? I won’t help you even if you ask me.”
“I wouldn’t ask Onii-chan for that. I’ve already finished my homework anyway.”
My little sister is so smart…
She finishes her homework, makes dinner, does the housework, and still has a fulfilling private life.
“Not that. It’s something else.”
Shuka tries to get back on topic.
Based on my experience, Shuka’s “Ah, that’s right” doesn’t lead to anything good.
The fact that she remembered it here and said it out loud must mean that I’m somehow involved.
“Today, someone named Kotobuki-san came to see me.”
“Really?”
Kotobuki-san, huh?
I don’t know who that is, but what’s the big deal about that?
As I was thinking about this, I noticed something was off.
“Hmm? Kotobuki-san?”
“Remember the person who collapsed the other day? I heard she’s the daughter of that person.”
“…Ah, I see. So, what happened?”
Why did Kotobuki come looking for Shuka?
And I wonder if this Kotobuki-san is the older or younger sister. Wait, which one is the older sister and which one is the younger sister anyway?
In the first place, how does she know about Shuka anyway?
My thoughts went round and round, but I couldn’t come up with any answer.
“The woman that collapsed is safe now. Apparently, she would have been in danger if she hadn’t received first aid, so it looks like you really did a great job, Onii-chan.”
“…Is that all?”
If she had just conveyed that gratitude to Shuka, then there would be no problem. In fact, I’m even grateful to know that the woman turned out okay.
“Hmm. She asked about Onii-chan, too.”
I knew it.
They were searching for me desperately, those sisters.
“And?”
“I told them Onii-chan is Kirishima Ao.”
“…Hah~”
When I slumped my shoulders, Shuka tilted her head quizzically. She looked confused as to why I was so depressed.
“She was really beautiful.”
“I see. By the way, did you say anything else?”
“We talked about various things, but if I had to pick out something important that relates to Onii-chan…”
“What is it?”
“She asked me if you had a girlfriend. I guess this means spring is coming soon for you, Onii-chan. And I can’t believe it’s such a beautiful girl!”
Why on earth was that topic even brought up? She should have just said thank you and gone home.
“By the way, what did you answer?”
“I said you’re actively looking!” (T/N: Oi! This imouto so kind!)

“Ah.”
The next day.
As I arrived at school, I saw a female student at the school gate and blurted out something.
She was leaning her back against the pillar of the school gate, looking around warily. She was clearly waiting for someone.
She had long black hair, which swayed elegantly every time she moved her head. I couldn’t help but admire how well she seemed to take care of each strand.
No, that doesn’t matter right now.
What matters is that that female student is Kotobuki Yuzuki.
This is just my subjective opinion, but if I had to choose one adjective to compliment the appearances of the Kotobuki sisters, I would call Hikari cute and Yuzuki beautiful.
That’s why it must have been Yuzuki who visited Shuka yesterday. And if my imagination is correct, she’s waiting for me.
Even if I wanted to take a detour, the school rule dictates that students must enter through this gate.
That’s probably why she chose this place to wait.
Every boy passing by is 100% stealing glances at her. Some even go as far as to call out to her, though she brushes them off casually.
But it’s no wonder that their eyes are drawn to her. Even though she’s just leaning against the post, she somehow looks picturesque.
That’s how beautiful she is.
She’s wearing a camel-colored blazer on top of her shirt. Around her neck is a ribbon in the school year color and her skirt is green checked.
It’s an ordinary uniform, yet it gives off the impression of being at the forefront of fashion.
I’m left acutely aware that the impression of clothing can be heavily influenced by the person wearing it.
“Ah!”
As I was thinking about this, my eyes met with Kotobuki Yuzuki. When she saw my face, her expression brightened up, like a dog that had found its owner.
She stepped away from the post but didn’t run over. She just stood there, gazing at me.
The happy aura she exuded made it feel like if she had a tail, it would be wagging excitedly, drawing curious looks from the other students around us.
The distance between us was about 25 meters.
I wondered what to do, but then I realized that there was no way to escape, so I started walking.
If we stayed here for too long, people would just look at us strangely. That goes for me and her.
So, I decided to brace myself and have a conversation.
Then again, she might just be here to say thank you. This could turn out to be such a mundane event that I feel embarrassed about my overactive self-awareness and caution.
“Good morning, Kirishima Ao-kun.”
When I reached her, Kotobuki Yuzuki looked at me and greeted me. I had imagined her to be quite tall, but facing her like this, I was relieved to see that I was still taller than her.
“Good morning, Kotobuki Yuzuki-san.”
Now, what should I do? No, what will she say?
While I was thinking about it, Kotobuki made her move.
“Hey.”
“Yes?”
Her serious expression morphed into a smile that reminded me of a Line sticker as she said,
“Can I call you Ao-kun?”
“I can’t believe your first words to me are that!”
