Chapter 29 – The Great Detective’s Brilliant Deduction
That night, I was alone in my room, lost in thought. I laid on the carpet on the floor and stared blankly at the ceiling.
When I said lost in thought, I meant I was thinking about Christmas.
Today, I was talking about that with Yuzuki in the library. The library committee girl barged in and cut me off halfway through, so I missed the chance.
It was probably an invitation to spend Christmas together.
If that’s the case, it might have been a good thing that she cut me off.
After all, I hadn’t fully sorted out my thoughts yet. I wanted to make my decision and invite her myself.
And now, here I am, thinking about it.
I also had to consider my part-time job, and finals were coming up, so there was a lot to think about.
“……”
Yuzuki and Hikari.
Compared to other girls, the two of them are special to me. I don’t have enough proof to say I “like” them, but they are certainly special.
But for now, I can’t decide which is better between Yuzuki and Hikari. So I can’t meet just one of them on Christmas.
Then what should I do?
I could meet one on Christmas Eve and the other on Christmas Day. Or I could do it like before, splitting it into two parts and meeting both in one day.
I could also take the plunge and not meet either of them.
Or I could meet both at the same time.
These are the options I can think of.
Since I didn’t have any plans, my schedule was basically blank, so meeting them on two separate days seemed the most realistic.
I learned from the last time that doing it in two parts was quite exhausting. Meeting both at the same time was out of the question.
Yeah.
This is it.
It’s probably the best option.
More importantly…
“…Could you move?”
“Ah, sorry. It looked like it would be uncomfortable to sit on, but I thought I’d sit anyway, and it turned out it was Onii-chan!”
“You didn’t need to add the comment about being uncomfortable to sit on…”
“…So you’re okay being a chair.”
Shuka muttered to herself in response to my retort, and stood up as she said this.
As usual, Shuka had entered my room without knocking, and without any hesitation, she sat on top of me as I laid down.
Luckily she wasn’t too heavy. She’s short and thin, so it’s no wonder she’s light.
“Do you need something?”
“Do you think I’d come to your room for no reason?”
“You do come over sometimes.”
When I said that, Shuka pouted in disgust. I was only stating the facts, but somehow it felt like I was in the wrong.
“So, what is it?”
I decided to steer the conversation back.
“Hmm?”
“What’s the matter?”
“Eh, it’s nothing.”
She looked at me like, “What’s wrong?” and I couldn’t help but show my confusion.
Doesn’t she think about her own words from a few seconds ago? Isn’t her conversation with her brother a bit too casual?
“Just kidding!”
As I was completely confused, Shuka stuck out her tongue and laughed playfully.
Her smile seemed to say, “Got you,” and it was starting to stress me out.
“I was bored so I came to hang out with you, Onii-chan.”
“You really don’t have any business to discuss, do you?”
“Huh? Your cute little sister is talking to an introvert like you, you know? I should be treated with gratitude!”
Shuka puffed out her cheeks. This isn’t the first time she’s come to my room because she’s bored and has no business, so I don’t really think about it now.
“Did you want to talk?”
Shuka dove into my bed as if it was the most natural thing in the world, then looked at me.
It’s really scary that she came all the way here and then tossed everything over to me. It’s even more so when she gets mad if the topic I give her isn’t interesting.
Well, I was just gathering my thoughts, so I’ll ask her opinion.
There might be things I could see by talking to someone else.
“Is Shuka popular with the guys?”
“Wait, are we talking about love lives between siblings? I don’t want Onii-chan knowing about my love life!”
“It’s just casual chat.”
“Ugh,” Shuka exaggerated, making a deliberately withdrawn expression. It’s common for her to retort in conversations, and I don’t think it’s a bad thing, but she does it too much. That often causes us to steer too far off-topic.
“Well?”
“Well, I guess I’m pretty popular with the guys. I mean, you know, I’d say my looks are about 85 out of 100~”
“You have a high opinion of yourself.”
However, it’s also true. She’s my little sister, so I don’t think much of her, but she has a beautiful face and is well developed for a middle school student.
Unlike me, she’s friendly, so she probably has a lot of friends. She has some personality flaws, but I’m sure she hides them pretty well.
“Well, that’s fine. But if two handsome guys asked you out, what would you do?”
“If their looks were about the same, I’d choose based on other factors. Like personality or shared interests.”
“What if those were pretty much the same too?”
“Then I’d go on a date with both. You can’t really know if you’re compatible unless you hang out, right?”
“And if you thought both were good guys?”
She frowned, feeling uncomfortable with my barrage of questions, but still thought it over and gave me an answer.
“I can’t imagine that happening, but if it did, I’d still have to choose one of them. I can’t date both, but I can’t ignore both either.”
I guess that’s true.
I don’t know what it was like in the past, but at least in this day and age, it’s the norm.
It’s not exactly a commendable situation, but if everyone is happy, maybe dating two people isn’t so wrong after all.
“If you were thinking of going on a date with those two boys for Christmas, what do you think would be a good schedule?”
“Onii-chan, you’ve been asking really specific questions for a while now.”
Shuka had gotten up and was sitting on the bed. She put her hand to her chin, making a difficult face.
After pondering for a few seconds, Akina’s eyes widened in realization, and she looked at me as if she couldn’t believe it.
“W-what is it?”
“That day, there were two girls surrounding the collapsed woman. One of them was a beautiful woman with black hair. The one next to her looked about the same age… Maybe they’re sisters or something. One of them had feelings for Onii-chan who had helped their mother. If that’s the case, it’s not impossible that the other sister might feel the same way!”
Shuka muttered in one breath, stood up energetically, and pointed at me.
“Onii-chan, are they both trying to hit on you?!”
