Chapter 14 – Just the Two of Us in the Library
Seeing her in her uniform up close like this, she gives off a slightly different impression compared to our date.
Perhaps it’s her personality, but the way she wears her uniform so neatly shows how serious she is.
Her shirt is buttoned all the way up, and she keeps her ribbon tied properly without loosening it. Her skirt is knee-length, not short like the other girls’, and while the others are wearing hoodies or jackets, she’s wearing a blazer.
With her black hair and sharp expression, she really does look like an honor student.
“So, is there something you need?”
“Hmm?”
I’ve never seen her in the library. So I assumed that the fact that she’s here meant that she had something to do with me, but judging by her reaction, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
“Well, I was just wondering if there was something you needed. You’ve come all the way here.”
“Is it really so strange for me to be in the library? I think I do give off a bit of that literary girl vibe, don’t I?”
As she said this, Yuzuki reached out to my face.
“Wait, what are you——”
Before I could react, Yuzuki’s hands reached my face and swiftly removed my glasses. Then she put them on herself.
“Ugh, I feel dizzy.”
Of course.
The prescription doesn’t match. My eyesight is pretty terrible, you know.
“How do I look? Don’t I seem even more like a literary girl now?”
“I can’t see.”
“Oh my.”
When she took my glasses off, everything turned blurry. It was like a mosaic filter had been put on my vision.
Naturally, I can’t see Yuzuki’s face clearly either. Well, I can sort of tell where she is, and if I focus, I can vaguely see that she’s wearing my glasses.
But I can’t see her properly.
“Then move closer,” she said.
Yuzuki reached out to my face again.
Then, she held onto my face firmly with both hands, putting strength into her hands.
“Hey, w-what are you…”
My face and Yuzuki’s were suddenly very close.
Her face was literally right in front of my nose. No matter how bad my eyesight was, I could see her from this distance.
I could feel Yuzuki’s breathing directly.
I could also tell that her cheeks were slightly flushed.
“How do I look?”
“If you’re embarrassed, you don’t have to do this.”
“How. Do. I. Look?”
She pinched my cheek.
It actually hurt quite a bit.
“I think you’re cute.”
“I-I didn’t ask if I was cute or not!”
After I’d given my honest opinion, Yuzuki hurriedly let go of my hand, her hands pushing against my chest to shove me back.
“Hey, you’re being too loud. Keep your voice down.”
“Hah~”
“I said keep your voice down.”
I hurriedly looked at the gal student at the reception desk. She didn’t seem suspicious of us, and just kept playing with her smartphone.
Even if she’s not interested, isn’t that a bit too much?
Although I know it’s not my place to say this as the one who caused the commotion, I think she should pay attention here.
Should I give her a warning? No, it’ll just make things more complicated.
“Here, I’m giving these back.”
“Ah, yeah.”
Yuzuki, who seems to have calmed down, returned my glasses. I put them back on and turned to face her again.
“So, what was it? Did you actually come here to read?”
The conversation had gone off track, so I tried steering it back. I still didn’t know why she had come to the library in the first place.
“No, that’s not it.”
“Then what was all that literary girl talk about?”
“Just an after-school joke.”
“So… What did you come to the library for?”
“Of course, because there was something I had to tell Ao-kun.”
Yuzuki’s expression was serious as she said this. It seemed like she had forgotten all about the fun atmosphere from before, and I involuntarily became nervous as well.
“Something you had to tell me?”
I frowned.
Yuzuki nodded as I repeated what she said.
However…
“But this isn’t the place to talk about it, so let’s put that off for now.”
“Should we move to another place then?”
“No, please try to understand a girl’s heart a bit more. What I meant was that if we take care of the matter now, this time together will end, so I’m putting it off for later.”
“A girl’s heart is way too complicated.”
◇
“Ao-kun, you like reading books, right?”
“Yeah, I think I like it more than the average person.”
“Do you have any recommendations?”
Yuzuki asked, peering into my face.
“You like horror, don’t you?”
“Yes. And I also like simple romance stories.”
I don’t read romance stories that often, and I’m not that knowledgeable about horror. My recommendations in that genre are limited.
“For example, how about this one?”
I took out a book from the shelf and handed it to Yuzuki.
“What’s this?”
“It’s a light novel.”
“Otaku of the Dead?”
“Yeah, it’s one of those zombie panic stories.”
“But an otaku?”
Yuzuki furrowed her brow.
Maybe otaku and zombies don’t go together? I’ve never seen that combination in any of the works I’ve seen before, so it might be unusual.
“The main character is a guy who supports an underground idol group.”
“Hmm,” Yuzuki said, beginning to read the synopsis on the back cover.
One day, a part of Tokyo was suddenly sealed off and designated a danger zone. The cause was a mysterious zombie phenomenon.
The protagonist, Samejima, races through the danger zone on his motorcycle to save his favorite idol. He rescues the idol from a zombie attack and teams up with his otaku friends to survive.
The story has plenty of ridiculous and funny moments, but it also features some genuinely touching scenes towards the end. It hits all the right notes for a zombie story, and in my opinion, it’s a pretty good work.
“Well, if you’re not interested, you don’t have to read it.”
“No, I’ll read it since I’m here. You’re going to read now too, right, Ao-kun?”
“Yeah, I’m planning to.”
“I’d be bored just sitting around, so I’ll read too.”
And so, the two of us grabbed the book and moved to the table area. I sat down wherever I could, and Yuzuki tried to sit next to me.
“No, you can’t sit next to someone else.”
“There’s no such rule. Social distancing? What era are you living in?”
“It wasn’t that long ago. No, that’s not the point. It’s weird for Yuzuki and me to sit next to each other.”
“We’re classmates, so it’s not weird.”
“If we talked in class on a regular basis, I guess that would be okay, but we don’t hang out at all, so it’ll seem weird.”
“It’s fine. If we run into someone we know, I’ll come up with a good excuse. Besides, you know we have to be quiet in the library, right?”
“You’re the last person who should be saying that.”
Well… In the end, no one else had come to the library except for us by the time we left, so my worries were for nothing.
