Volume 01 A Prologue 1 – I Refuse
T/N: This is heavy on world building at the start, but bear with me. Harem stuffs will start later on, but I will post enough chapters to reach that part on launch. I’m going to be monitoring this to see if my readers would like it, if so I may do something similar, something heavy on management.
I don’t have any particular complaints about life in Japan right now.
My workplace isn’t some soul-crushing, exploitative company either.
I don’t have a wife or daughter or anything like that.
Nor do I think the world is particularly fleeting or meaningless.
I spend my days watching TV, playing new games, reading novels, taking baths, and eating meals. I’m past my student days, but I don’t particularly yearn to go back to them either.
I’m sure there are plenty of opinions on this. Some people might say, “Being a student was way better!!” And I bet there are tons of folks who feel that way.
But think about it carefully—were we really that free as students?
We were swamped with schoolwork, had little money to spend freely, and always had to keep an eye on our parents’ reactions.
Oh, sorry if your parents have passed away or something. I’m not saying parents are a burden or anything like that.
Once you become an adult, you stop relying on your parents and start living for yourself. For me, that was fun. It gave me a real sense of being alive.
So, what’s my point?
I’m satisfied with my life as it is.
That’s why I can say clearly to the person standing at my apartment door right now:
“Sorry, I’m not interested in religion or anything. I’m already part of the same one as my family.”
Isn’t that how most people are? I mean, who goes out of their way to seek out some newfangled cult to join? Most people just end up in whatever religion their parents raised them in, right?
Anyway, I try to shut the door after politely declining, but—
“W-Wait, please! Could you just hear me out a little longer!?”
The person puts their hand on the door to stop it from closing.
I’m not some monster who’d slam the door shut knowing it might crush their hand.
But when I open the door again—
“Would you be interested in managing a dungeon? It comes with the blessing and support of a goddess!!”
If a blonde beauty in a suit says something like that, anyone would react the way I did.
If she’d said something like, “I fell in love with you at first sight,” I might—might—have been willing to entertain the idea that she had a reason to barge into my home.
Okay, fine, I say “might,” but that’s basically the same as saying I wouldn’t buy it.
For those thinking, “This isn’t even about religion,” hear me out. I firmly believe it’s a mistake to engage with someone who suddenly starts talking about “managing” something or anything involving money.
Here’s the deal: these types always start with some nonsensical pitch, and their goal is to get you to “listen to the details.”
If you ask for specifics or say, “I’m not interested in managing anything,” they’ll hit you with, “Don’t worry!! We’ll support you!!” and drag you into a long, drawn-out quagmire of a conversation.
On the flip side, if you try to brush them off with vague excuses like, “I’ve got work” or “I’m in a hurry,” you’re just giving them an opening to keep pushing.
So, I pretend I didn’t hear them and go to shut the door. By the way, if this person wasn’t a beauty, I’d have slammed it shut instantly and turned off the intercom.
I’m sure every household has its own way of dealing with door-to-door solicitors.
But this beauty, who’s gone so far as to hold the door to keep talking, I’m not even going to consider a “woman” anymore.
I’m not naive enough to fall for something that feels like a setup from a drama, light novel, or manga, raising some kind of “flag.”
“Alright, it’s dangerous, so please let go of the door.”
I say this and open the door wide (this part’s important). When I do, she lets go, steps back to wait for the door to fully open—
And I immediately slam it shut. Perfect.
“Huh? W-What!? No way!!”
I lock the door, turn off the intercom, head back to my room, and crank up the game volume to the loudest I can tolerate.
What, you think that’s heartless? Go ahead and listen to their spiel then. Waste your time and get suckered into some shady investment scheme.
You might wonder what I’d do if they kept making a fuss outside. Don’t worry—reality is harsh. I’d just call the cops, and that’d be the end of it.
In the end, it seems she gave up once the door was shut. She didn’t make a scene and left quietly.
I turn down the game volume and get ready to enjoy my day off again…
“Don’t mess with me!!”
Suddenly, the screen is blocked, and that same beauty appears.
I’m playing a real-time action RPG where you can’t pause with the start button. I’m in the middle of a brutal boss fight where one mistake means instant death… I try to dodge her and look at the screen, but that split-second delay was fatal, and my character is down.
…I feel like my heart’s about to break…
“You’re the one messing around!!”
Naturally, I lose it. But I stay cool. I grab my phone and dial 110… Oh, it’s ringing.
“Police? There’s a stranger who broke into my apartment… Yes, my address is…”
“Hey!? Wait!! It’s a misunderstanding!!”
The beauty finally seems to realize what I’m doing and slips her hand between the phone and my ear, cutting off the call.
“A misunderstanding? This is straight-up trespassing.”
I try to dial 110 again… but she interrupts me.
“This guy’s tougher than I thought… Alright, this should work…”
She’s muttering something, but come on, this is a perfectly normal response. I’m 90% confident that if the entire Japanese population saw what she did, they wouldn’t say I’m in the wrong. Nothing’s ever 100%, you know…
Then the beauty points her hand at me.
“I’ll explain over there!!”
A flash of light engulfs me…
