Chapter 54: The Truth Known All Along
“W-Where is it…?”
At the deepest part of the insane anthill, there was a queen ant called the Sellarant Queen. After I quickly defeated her, Edward, having thoroughly searched the vast space, was once again on his knees, taking a moment to catch his breath.
“Haa, I’m tired.”
The place wasn’t very deep, but the sheer number of ants was overwhelming.
Since being outnumbered would be a hassle, we had taken the shortest route possible to avoid letting the ants multiply any further, but this was still quite challenging after fighting Onyx with all my might.
“Does it hurt?”
“I’m fine. It’ll heal quickly.”
I replied with a smile to Alicia, who looked worried.
“How can you be okay with your arm being taken off?”
“It’s because I’m trained.”
I answered Mariana’s question simply.
The Sellarant Queen was a giant queen ant with six wings, capable of launching blades of wind from her huge wings.
She could also spit out a strong formic acid capable of melting rocks, and the foul smell of the acid was quite irritating to the nose and eyes, making her a reasonably dangerous enemy.
Man, that was close.
Just as I thought the acid was blocked by my barrier, she concentrated a blade of wind and attacked, piercing through the barrier and severing my arm.
If you ask me, “Couldn’t you have dodged that?”
It was impossible since I was in the middle of sticking my hand in her mouth and tampering with her brain core.
Normally, wind blades or such wouldn’t affect me, and I pushed myself too hard, thinking about how the others would suffer if sprayed with acid. As a result, the barrier was slightly penetrated, and my right arm was cut off from the elbow down.
However, I quickly picked it up and reattached it to the severed surface, so it was no problem at all.
“This is what Mariana should aim for with her healing magic!”
“No, I don’t want to…”
As I raised my reattached hand’s right thumb, Mariana was normally refusing while hiding behind Alicia’s back, even though it’s definitely strong.
Healing magic could surprisingly handle even wounds that seem too severe to bear, so everyone should learn to use it.
Though, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.
“Such, such nonsense… it must be somewhere…”
While we were talking, Edward continued searching, muttering to himself as he flipped stones and shone light into the small shadows of the cave.
Sacred relics aren’t bugs; they wouldn’t be found in such places.
They’re meant to be in places with a temple-like atmosphere rather than caves, designed nicely by the game creators.
This place is a dungeon, but not the kind related to games, so at best, you could find a huge magical core.
“Your Highness, Edward, do you see now? Could you, with your abilities and just a Cloak of Concealment, sneak past the vast number of ants and reach the deepest part?”
“…That would’ve been difficult,”
Edward said, turning away with a look of resignation.
“I had a suspicion I was sent to search for something that doesn’t exist.”
Yet, he continued,
“Still, the days she gave me were too warm to fully return. Born into royalty, where everyone saw not me but my title, Patricia, whom I met in the town below the castle, shone brightly—Buha”
“Ah, we don’t need to hear more of that; let’s head back.”
It looked like a long, unnecessary story was about to start, so I kicked him to get him up faster.
I already knew about the meeting.
When the protagonist met Edward at the academy, she remembered a time when she was a kid. She met a boy of the same age who was lost, and they ended up playing together regularly. That boy didn’t know the city well, which made things quite interesting and funny.
I didn’t have time for sentimental stories, so I quickly dismissed it.
“Kicking a royal’s rear, huh… But thinking about it, even that feels contradictory for me now—Begoh”
“Let’s go, Your Highness.”
“…Can’t I cry a bit more before keeping my promise?”
“You can indulge all you want when we get back home. It’s forbidden to get lost in thought in enemy territory in Brave’s domain.”
There’s no time for that in enemy territory.
“Your Highness has been deceived by a bewitching woman. That’s the only fact, so let’s not get involved any further and hurry up.”
“Uuh… Patricia… Why, why…”
Don’t cry now.
Go cry at home.
“Your Highness, since we took the shortest route here, there are still ants around. I’m quite worn out from getting here, so I can’t guarantee our safety anymore.”
“If you’re Brave, it shouldn’t be a problem, right?”
Today was an exception.
The fact that a queen ant could breach my barrier proves that.
“I was silently watching from behind, but you are indeed Brave—”
“Ragna! The ants are coming this way!”
“Hiie, what heavy footsteps!”
Cutting off Edward’s words, Alicia and Mariana, standing near the entrance of the deepest part, shouted out.
Just because we defeated the queen ant quickly, it didn’t mean all the ants in the nest would just disappear.
Instead, the remaining ants, sensing the death of their queen, gathered at this deepest part.
They weren’t coming for a battle of revenge but to simply select the next queen from the potential eggs.
The egg with the highest magical power would become the next queen.
“Your Highness, if you keep wallowing in sentimentality, you’re going to die. If you want to live, get up quickly and ready your weapon.”
“…I-I understand.”
We immediately headed towards the entrance passage, which was packed tight with ants.
GICHI-GICHI-GICHI-GICHI!
“There’s too many!”
“Sir Ragna, Alicia narrowed the entrance in an instant! And she did it without chanting.”
“Wow, that’s amazing, Alicia!”
Despite the lack of urgency, she managed to perform magic without chanting. My fiancée truly is remarkable.
“I don’t want to face death fighting monsters again. This stops them from flooding in all at once, but now, how do we escape…?”
“The ants are fragile, so just blow them away with magic.”
“T-Then leave that to me! My Wind Blast can do it!”
As the prince stepped forward, a massive flame engulfed the crowded ants at the narrowed entrance.
“AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”
Even the prince was caught on fire.
