Chapter 20: The Headmaster, Vorsea Gran Cascade
“Ragna Vel Brave”
As I watched the examiner rolling his eyes back awkwardly, a voice came from behind me.
Turning around, I saw an elderly man standing at the entrance of the gymnasium.
His hair was a greyish-brown perm, completely lacking in luster, with sharp, hawk-like eyes and a long beard tied around his chest.
He was dressed in a high-quality robe, faded but intricately decorated, and I recognized him.
His name was Vorsea Gran Cascade, the headmaster of the Aether Academy and one of the men who bore the title of sage.
“It seems noisy. Is this your doing?”
“Yeah, well,”
In this country, the middle name “Gran” is a mark of a ducal family.
The Cascade family is one of the three ducal families in Aetherdam.
And Vorsea was a character I remembered well from games, depicted as a man capable of declaring that in the academy he founded, all, whether noble or commoner, were equal as students of the sage.
This game is a love story between nobles and commoners.
It features characters who subtly help the protagonist, who is troubled by her difference in social status, within the academy.
Then why bother separating classes into special and regular? It seems like a contradiction.
Well, it must be the complex desires of various nobles, and such exclusivity is probably important among them.
“Hmm,”
Looking at the shattered black target, the wall with a large hole blown through it, the teacher who had wet himself with eyes rolled back, and the wooden sword reinforced with iron, Vorsea gave a short and piercing gaze, as if seeing through everything.
“Passed.”
“Thank you.”
I said gratefully.
Vorsea is a character on the protagonist’s side, who does not approve of discrimination.
It was reassuring to know he saw me, even as a member of the Brave family, without bias.
“I have a question for you.”
“What is it?”
“What kind of magic can you use?”
“All of it.”
In this magical powerhouse of a country, I can use all the popular elements like fire, water, wind, and earth, as well as their subtypes like ice and lightning, and even the dualities like light, dark, sacred, and evil. If I can learn and remember it, I can use it.
“Which one are you best at?”
“Barriers. That’s why I learned everything.”
I needed to, for everything.
To live as a Brave, to defy fate, I couldn’t lack even one.
Honestly answering, Vorsea stroked his beard slightly, pondering, then said,
“Then you don’t need to take the academic tests.”
“Is that okay?”
“If there’s no lie in your words, you can’t be measured by the standards of fools.”
Was he referring to the examiner who rolled his eyes back, the idiots who can only see the surface, or the corrupt ones sitting comfortably in their power?
orsea’s words seemed to carry many meanings.
“For your bloodline, there’s no difference between the regular and special classes.”
“Huh?”
“Do you still want to enter the special class?”
I didn’t particularly want to.
Even without being as extreme as the examiner who had served as a test, the Brave family was a target of discrimination, just like the assassins sent from the capital.
Less trouble in the regular class suited me fine; I just wanted to blend in as a student and lead a modest school life.
Originally, I planned to bow my head and beg for mercy there, but now, I can’t say the same.
“Because there’s someone I need to protect.”
My fiancée, who’s been tossed around by fate.
“This year’s academy will be noisy. Many fates will intertwine, becoming complex and sometimes even going astray.”
Vorsea said before asking me again,
“Even so, will you step into the special class?”
“I don’t plan to run away.”
“Good.”
Vorsea, locking eyes with me, softened his tone slightly and announced,
“As the headmaster, I’ll allow you to enter the special class.”
“But, Headmaster!”
The examiner, who had conveniently woken up, panicked upon hearing Vorsea’s words.
“He comes from a forsaken place! And his fiancée, a former ducal lady, has caused a terrible incident!! Allowing him to enroll, let alone enter the special class, will surely disturb the peace of the academy!!”
“Fool!!”
Vorsea’s shout echoed, and magical power leaked from his body like a torrential waterfall.
“Hiii.”
The examiner, turning pale and trembling under the pressure, was told,
“Who are you within this academy’s grounds? If you’re a noble, leave at once.”
“…I’m a teacher…”
The examiner said, looking down, sweat dripping from his face under the immense pressure.
“Then act like a teacher. If you think problems will arise, guide the way to prevent them and ensure they don’t happen again.”
“Y-Yes, I’m sorry…”
Then arrange to have the wall fixed immediately.”
“Yes…”
In no time, the examiner left the gymnasium as if fleeing.
Watching his back, I bowed my head to Vorsea once more.
“Thank you.”
“I do not approve of discrimination based on student status under the name of a sage, but I won’t involve myself in problems caused by other factors. Being disliked due to misunderstandings of one’s behavior is one’s own responsibility.”
What he’s saying seems a bit complicated, but it basically means if you’re disliked for your attitude, it’s up to you to fix it.
But, this statement might confuse many, right?
Wouldn’t it be better to make it simpler?
Like, act in a way that considers others’ feelings.
“I understand. In the Brave territory, those who arrogantly misuse their power end up dead… But I won’t hold back when I feel it’s right to fight.”
That’s what it means to be a Brave.
“…Do as you like.”
With that, Vorsea also left the gymnasium.
Is this like saying if things reach a breaking point, it’s okay to act?
Well, I don’t plan on causing trouble. It’s fine as long as I can enjoy a fun school life with Alicia.
“Ragna Vel Brave, there was something I forgot to mention.”
The headmaster came back in a hurry.
And here I thought he had left so coolly.
“While I’ve allowed you to use that house as a special case, considering your situation, remember, you are still students. Keep your relationship healthy.”
“Ah, yes.”
Those were the words spoken with his sharp gaze and sour tone.
Got it, headmaster.
I don’t plan on becoming a beast of the Brave.
