CHAPTER 2 : All Zero-Result Effort
“Damn it! Ei! Damn it, damn it!”
After finishing the classroom lecture and the chores assigned by Giselle, I practiced alone at the training ground as part of my daily routine.
To vent my frustration, I slashed at a wooden puppet wrapped in metal plates with a training short sword.
But my frustration wasn’t so much directed towards Giselle, who viewed me as her enemy, but towards myself, who despite all the efforts, couldn’t seem to grow at all.
“Why…won’t my level go up at all?”
Level is a concrete indicator of an individual’s strength. When a monster is defeated, the soul’s components, called magic elements, are incorporated to enhance the strength of the soul, which is then reflected in various ability stats, thus levelling up.
But as the younger children said, normally, one’s level should rise to around 5 or 6 just by ageing, even without earning magic elements, also known as experience points.
However…
“Ouch!”
I recklessly swung my sword, perhaps due to my weakness, rather than the sword’s fault, and ended up crushing a bean in my palm, causing it to bleed. Drenched in sweat, I decided to take a break.
“…Status Open.”
Since I had nothing else to do, I gazed at the status plate I always carried in my pocket. However,
Name: Cross Alacart
Race: Human
Age: 14
Class: Not Assigned
Level: 0
Strength: 0, Defense: 0, Magic Defense: 0, Agility: 0
(Attack Magic: 0, Special Magic: 0, Processing Magic: 0, Dexterity: 0)
Skills: None
Only the zeros were still displayed. The value of the status indicated how much the enhanced soul reinforced the body, so a value of 0 means there’s only the strength of the bare body.
No wonder I lost to a younger girl in a strength comparison.
It’s not strange for anyone to have 0 in columns like attack magic, as it corresponds to the “class” you’ve yet to be assigned to. But it was beyond being a mere dropout to have all other items be 0.
I hadn’t been concerned before, thinking “I’m just a little slow at growing,” but as the younger children pointed out, this was too much for a 14-year-old…
(No talent, no prospects, no aptitude…)
Such words crossed my mind, and I felt like crying alone in the darkness of the night where everyone was asleep.
“…No, but, I can’t give up…”
That’s why in this world, the most important thing is to receive a certain ‘job class’ and develop your aptitude to the fullest extent possible.
The Harvest Festival is in one week from now. Each person will have two or three options to choose from in terms of suitable jobs, and this choice will greatly affect our lives.
“Yeah, that’s right. As long as I receive a ‘job class,’ I’ll be able to manage somehow. Maybe I’ll even receive an amazing ‘job class’ and be able to grow rapidly,” I thought optimistically.
…Well, everyone starts with a low-level job when they receive their ‘job class.’ Through levelling up and training their skills, they work their way up to intermediate and advanced jobs.
Anyway, it’s too early to give up.
The amount of aptitude someone has for their received ‘job class’ can be measured by the number of skills they manifest at the time of bestowal. It is also said that the number of skills reflects the effort made since childhood. Therefore, I was sure that the efforts I was making now would not be in vain.
“Alright! Break’s over! It’s time to stop feeling down!” I slapped my own cheek to motivate myself and began running on the competition course, which replicated the rough terrain of the forest.
