Episode 1 : Crossing Zero Hour
There was a particular scene that refuses to leave my memory.
When I was still 10 years old, or roughly four years ago, Cross Alacalt occurred. I was born and reared in a village that was under attack by a horde of monsters. When I was a little child, the entire community adopted me as one of their own when I lost my parents in an accident.
The creatures, though, didn’t give a damn.
As the crops and buildings were being destroyed, familiar people’s screams and enraged voices could be constantly heard. There wasn’t any chance. They were all going to pass away. Everyone would be trampled by the monsters, without exception.
When the animals moved nearer to us, everyone’s faces contorted in agony as adults with guns fell one by one. Then that person appeared.
He suddenly manifested as the wind in front of my eyes after he had tragically collapsed. A silver blade ran through the air in a flash. His hair flew like silver and sparkled like a well-polished treasure sword.
The individual, the descendent of a hero, slaughtered the hordes of monstrous animals with a young body, barely two years older than myself.
He had been adventuring in numerous locations as part of his training, and he had brought a healer guard with him who was able to save every villager who had perished.
“Are you hurt?”
Perhaps it was because I was nearby, he asked and reached out his hand to me.
Looking up at the person who saved the village, I strongly felt that I wanted to become a strong and cool adventurer who could protect many people like him.
My chest felt like it was going to burst from the intensity and misery of my longing.
If I could become like him, I would spare no effort – But the reality of this world was not so sweet that such a wish could easily come true.
Fortress city Basculvia.
It was a city run by the adventurer’s guild to manage the world’s largest accumulation of magical power, the Abyssal Forest, and it was also known as the “Holy Land of Adventurers” where the world’s top adventurer school existed.
The Almeria Royal Adventurer School, built in a way that integrated with the outer wall of the city, had various facilities and veteran instructors, and was already a high-level training facility where strong and young adventurers from various places gathered to seek further improvement.
On the other hand, this school was also a special welfare facility that was attached to the guild, where orphans who have lost their families were raised, and those who wished to become adventurers in the future were educated from scratch.
“Pigyuu!?”
My orphanage roommate, who had been training with me, suddenly swung his sword and killed the horned rabbit with one blow.
“Ah, sorry. Thanks.” I said as I got up, grateful for being saved.
“It’s alright. It adds to my experience points. But Cross, seriously… you’re 14 years old and you lost to a horned rabbit? What’s up with that?” My roommate asked with an exasperated voice.
“Ugh,” I said.
“Consider them. You can’t take down a horned rabbit, but a few of the smaller kids can.” He proceeded, indicating a group of younger children who were nearby and who had just killed a horned rabbit.
“I hate to say it, but maybe you should start with a mock battle against the younger kids before facing off against horned rabbits.” he concluded awkwardly.
“What!? No way! I mean, Cross is weak!” Suddenly, a barrage of insults was directed towards me by the younger kids.
“He’s level 0! All his stats are at 0! Even kids his age should be at level 5 without training! We’re already level 2 and he couldn’t even beat us in arm wrestling!”
I felt a pang in my chest as the younger kids started booing and jeering. My roommate looked surprised and asked, “Wait, did you seriously lose to a 9-year-old girl in arm wrestling?”
“It’s a lie! Look!” I replied.
The younger kids then charged at me like a horned rabbit, and I was thrown to the ground, unable to defend myself. The others laughed at me.
“Come on, Cross, are you even trying?” My roommate asked, frustrated. “Even if they’re kids, you can’t go easy on them. Go back to practicing your swings.”
This was my situation. Cross Alakart, age 14, unable to defend himself against a horned rabbit or a group of younger kids. It all started on the day when the village was attacked by a pack of monsters. Although there were no casualties, the change in magic density caused the monster habitat to shift, and the villagers were forced to abandon their home. As the villagers scattered throughout the area, I couldn’t stay in the village anymore and was encouraged by the adults to seek refuge in Buscurvia, which was relatively close by. Later on, this place would become known as the Holy Land of adventurers, and I would be able to study to become an adventurer if I wanted.
She was a girl who, like me, was fourteen years old and reigned as the absolute boss of the orphanage. Not only did her strong personality give her a powerful leadership presence, but it was also her overwhelming talent that made her the boss.
Although she didn’t receive the early bestowal of a “job class,” which is synonymous with “unprecedented genius,” Giselle manifested her power known as “job skills” half a year earlier than normal. As a result, she was respected by senior adventurers and was well known not only among the graduates of the orphanage but also among the adventurers who came from outside the town.
Furthermore, Giselle seemed to possess a special power from birth, a unique skill , which made rumors circulate that she secretly accompanied senior adventurers on quests. As a result, her level was already fifteen.
Backed by her abilities and self-confidence, she ruled the orphanage as an excellent leader. Her authority was on par with that of veteran rough-and-tumble adventurers and, to be frank, her demeanor was rather unpleasant.
She had, however, consistently despised me for an unidentified reason, and during the previous six months, this impulse had significantly increased.
Disrupting my training had become a daily occurrence for her.
“B-but, Giselle, if I don’t train, I’ll always be weak–“
“Oh?”
My desperate response was crushed with a single mocking glance.
“There’s no point in training for a weakling who can’t even beat a horned rabbit. You’re just wasting training time and depriving others of the opportunity to grow. If you understand, go back to the dorm and clean up for us, zero points.”
Thump, thud.
Giselle pushed and shoved me by the shoulders toward the entrance of the training ground.
“Hey, Giselle, aren’t you going too far?” Her followers asked with a half-smile, but no one was really trying to stop Giselle’s tyranny as the absolute ruler.
Even the teachers who watched over the training didn’t provide any help, saying, “Dealing with such injustice is part of the training in the rough business of being an adventurer.”
As usual.
Hence, I was unable to participate in the training ground that Giselle controlled.
“Tch, who wants to be a daring explorer like a hero? It irritates me so much when scumbags believe they can become one by merely observing. They are worthless trash with no grasp of reality.”
I was forced to depart the training site alone and desolate because of Giselle’s flinging voice.
