Chapter 3
Makoto Himuro ①
It’s the last day of school before summer vacation begins, and I end the day with a feeling of relief now that everything has ended.
Everyone in the classroom was heading home as fast as they could, and I was heading home in a dash to get on my motorcycle as soon as humanly possible.
“I’m home, Mom. I’m going out for a while until dinner.”
“Welcome home, Makoto. You really never get tired of it, do you? It’s as if there are two Hayato-sans in the house now.”
Mom said in dismay as she mentioned my father’s name.
“I don’t think I’m not like him either. Well, whatever. I’m off.”
“I’ll see you later. Call me if you’re going to be late.”
“Got it…… Oh, shit.”
“What’s wrong?”
I unconsciously tried to touch my phone and realized that it was gone.
Thinking back, I don’t remember the last time I had it after the handout was being passed around, well I was also operating it in a hidden manner under the desk.
“My phone, I left it at school.”
Mom silently gave me a dumbfounded look.
I sigh and decide to go back to school to retrieve my phone.

“I guess I screwed up a bit. But I could just ride my motorcycle there so it shouldn’t take that long.”
I just changed my clothes and straddled the motorcycle. The motorcycle I got from my father is a complete touring motorcycle, so it has a luggage compartment on it, which is a big help. I could even fit my helmet inside it, which was very helpful.
I start the engine, with some sweat dripping down my head from the heat, and push on the gas pedal.
I enjoyed just riding my motorcycle through the familiar sights, which felt fresh and new to me now that I’m not just walking past them.
I parked my motorcycle in a nearby park and headed for the school.
It was the end of the test period and the students were leaving school early, so it seemed that everyone had already left.
I walked down the quiet hallway and entered the classroom, where I thought nobody else would be around, but for some reason I saw Hasumi-san sitting at her desk.
“Huh, Hasumi-san?”
She seemed to be just sitting on a chair gazing at the sky, but when she heard my voice, she turned her head in my direction.
“…Himuro-kun? What’s wrong?’
“I forgot my phone, so I came back. What are you doing here? Are you waiting for someone?”
I wonder if she was waiting for someone, as she was all alone until this hour.
“No, I’m not.”
“Then, what are you doing here?”
“I’m just doing nothing, I guess.”
I was puzzled by her mysterious answer. I wonder if her thinking had stopped due to the summer heat.
“That’s a stupid answer.”
“Fufu. I guess you’re right.”
“You’re acting like my little sister right now. That’s not very typical of you, Hasumi-san.”
When I said that, she stared at me with a blank expression on her face.
A pregnant silence passes between the two of us. It’s as if all the sounds around us have been cut out of the moment, and the air was filled with an indescribable tension.
When I was about to ask her why she was acting so differently compared to usual, she opened her mouth.
“What’s ‘typical’ of me?”
A simple question. But her dark eyes looked as if it were piercing through all my thoughts.
It sounded so cold and sharp that it reminded me of our first time together, it’s as if the memory of our pleasant conversations prior had all just been a dream.
“In a word, I guess I’m like a… tsukkomi.” (TLN: Tsukkomi means “The act of pointing out that something is ridiculous / very silly. Usually this happens between two people, who in that case are referred to as the ‘tsukkomi’ (who does the tsukkomi) and the ‘boke’, who says or does something funny or strange (the act of which is also called a ‘boke’)”, so in this case she’s the boke and he’s the tsukkomi.)
After thinking for a moment, I told her exactly what I had thought.
The first time I saw her, I thought she was a bit of a jerk, but she was so cold and sharp that it made me think I was dreaming.
“I say something stupid, and then you make fun of it. That’s what you’ve been doing for an entire month. So I don’t like it when you suddenly turn into a jerk.”
After a brief pause, she started laughing. She began laughing quietly and slowly got louder and louder, as if she couldn’t hold back her laughter anymore.
After laughing for a while, she calmed down. She looked at me with tears in her eyes as if she had laughed too hard.
“I knew it. Himuro-kun, you are funny. You’re the best.”
“I’m glad to hear that. I was worried that Hasumi-san might have eaten something strange to be that way.”
“You were worried about me?”
“That’s because we used to have a relationship where we were sitting next to each other.”
“Fufu. What’s with the “relationship?”, couldn’t you have expressed it in a better way?”
“I’m sorry, but we don’t carry that kind of correlation here.”
That can’t be helped. Because that’s exactly what it is.
If you want to be popular, compliment your sister! Say something witty! I think you were told that yesterday, but to be honest, it’s not something in your character to do. (TLN: I believe she was referring to herself in the third person as a “sister” here and the line after this given the previous lines, Edit: Okay I screwed up, these aren’t dialogues but the meaning remains the same.)
Besides, I’m confident that she’ll forgive you even if you use such casual wordings.
“I see. Then I have no choice.”
“Indeed. You don’t.”
When we say this to each other, silence falls upon the two of us. But it was not the tense-like atmosphere of before, it was a gentle, warm and cozy atmosphere, reminiscent of our times where we were talking to one another.
“Speaking of which, are you feeling alright?”
“What? Why are you asking that all of a sudden?”
It was good timing, so I decided to ask her something that had been bothering me for a bit.
However, since I asked her that without any context in the conversation, she looked at me strangely.
“No, you haven’t been feeling well lately. That’s exactly why you haven’t been sleeping as much.”
I know this because I’m used to seeing my sister and her makeup, but it feels like her makeup was trying to deceive her eyes. (TLN: oooffff that hurts)
If I’m wrong, that’s fine too.
“……You’re really looking at me properly, aren’t you, Himuro-kun?”
“Maybe. If you want, I can walk you home.”
I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to let her go home alone while she’s not feeling that well, so I’m going to ask her just in case.
“Can I ask you to do so for me then…?”
“Sure. I actually came here on my motorcycle, so it won’t take long.”
We leave the classroom together. We had never been to school together before, so it was a new feeling for me.
On the way to the park, we talked about trivial matters.
“I see you already got your motorcycle license.”
“Yeah. It’s all thanks to the test period.”
“That’s not what the test period is used for, you know?”
“Tell that to my dad, because he’s the one who caused it to happen in the first place.”
“Fufu. You’re a funny guy.”
“Not funny, I’m more of a ‘spur of the moment’ kind of person.”
As we were talking about this, we arrived at the motorcycle in no time.
I noticed that she didn’t know how to get onto the motorcycle, so I held out my hand to her, and she laid her hand on top of mine.
Her hand felt soft, which is a natural characteristic of women. I gently placed her on the back seat, being careful not to use the wrong amount of force to lift her up.
I turned the key and fired up the engine.
As I was riding about, she tapped me on the hip in the direction of when I needed to turn, and we soon arrived in front of an apartment building.
She slowly got off the motorcycle and smiled at me.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
I noticed that a lot of time had passed since we were at the school. I could see our shadows stretched in a long shape on the ground, illuminated by the setting sun.
“You’re amazing, Himuro-kun. While I’m frozen in my thoughts, you’re already shaping what you really want to do.”
“I told you before, didn’t I? I’m not saying I’m great. I’m just doing what I want to do. Speaking of which, have you found what you want to do yet, Hasumi-san?”
“…Yes. I do.”
She had previously said that she would think about it, but apparently she had found what she was looking for.
“I’m glad to hear that. So, what do you want to do? I’ll help you out if I can.”
In response to this question, she smiled with a glamorous smile that I had never seen before, and suddenly came up to me and hugged me.
I was unable to think of anything else as my mind went blank from the unexpectedness of it all, and she put her thin hands on my back and put her mouth close to my ear.
“I want to get to know you, Himuro-kun and… no, I want to get to know you, Makoto-kun. I want to be with Makoto-kun more than ever before. More than anyone else.” (TLN: SEGGS ORE WA SEGGS GAAAAAA) (EDN: someone please help this man out)
A sweet voice whispered to me that made my brain slowly fade away. As I stiffened even further, her joyful laughter continued to echo quietly along the streets.
