Chapter 1
Makoto Himuro ②
“Fuaaa, I feel so sleepy.”
The next day, I went to school trying to keep myself awake after playing some games all night. (TLN: One of us!)
This means that I have no choice but to carry out something that is commonly known as ‘Operation B’ or else ‘Operation B: Sleep Without Getting Caught’. It’s just an idea that popped into my head, as I don’t have an Operation A nor C.
However, usually I would be able to arrive at school undetected to my very ordinary appearance, but now that I’m seated next to Hasumi-san I get noticed very easily. Ugh, what do I do now?
Is the teacher the moving sort or are they the type that writes on the board? Are they the type to call out students for questions or not? I think it’s a good idea to analyze the situation and think of some strategies beforehand.
Before I even realized it, I was already at the entrance of the school. I had been worrying about how to solve this issue so much that I didn’t even realize that I was already here.
After entering the school and removing my shoes, I climbed my way up to the second floor of the four-story building. Having to go up one step at a time next year onwards is gonna be a pain. I’m hoping they’ll be generous and install an elevator for us soon.
After opening the entrance to the classroom, which I was getting slightly familiar with after all this time, I greeted whoever I met on the way and proceeded to my seat.
Then, as I sat down, I heard the usual chattering around the classroom begin, with that I realized that Hasumi-san had entered the room.
She’s always slightly late for school, but not too late either. She doesn’t seem to have a habit of sleeping in late and she barely even comes off as a drowsy person, but she could be the same type of person like me, who’s especially weak in the mornings.
“Good morning Himuro-kun, you look pretty tired.”
A lovely, clear voice came from the person beside me. It was so lovely and clear that it instantly relieved me of my drowsiness while I was absent-mindedly thinking about trivial stuff.
To be honest, I was taken aback by her unusual attitude, as she had rarely said anything other than a mechanical-like good morning before today.
“Good morning, Hasumi-san. As you said, I’m very tired.”
However, it was too difficult for me to move my entire body, so I instead turned my head around and greeted her like that, and my eyes met hers, which was also very unusual.
Normally, she doesn’t even bother to look at me, but I wonder if anything good has happened to her recently, her overall tone seems to be a bit softer than usual.
“Thank you for helping me out yesterday.”
But when she thanked me all of a sudden, it reminded me of something I had almost forgotten, despite the fact that it had happened just yesterday.
Goddamnit, I had almost forgotten about it completely due to my all-night gaming session and tiredness.
“No, don’t worry about it. It’s no big deal.”
To be honest, I answered it that way because I had forgotten about it to the point where it hadn’t even crossed my mind until she mentioned it out of the blue.
It was enough for me to be with the rare Hasumi-san yesterday, so much so that, instead, I’d be the one to pay just by being able to see her.
“Still. I just really wanted to thank you.”
She must be self-disciplined and have a strong sense of responsibility. It appears that my first impression of her was incorrect.
I had originally assumed she was a much colder, selfish person based on her usual sullen expression and the disdainful glances she sometimes gave to those around her.
I guess I should reflect on this a little. I might help her out again as a way to make amends for forming a selfish image of her when I didn’t know her that well.
“Then you’re more than welcome. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. I’ll help you out if I have time.”
“If you have time?”
“I meant that I’ll help you out if I’m free. Isn’t that obvious?”
As I said, I’ll help out if I’m not busy, but I don’t think I’m obligated enough to help her out on the release day of a new game. (TLN: Man’s got his priorities straight.)
“Fufu. Right, that’s how it usually goes.”
“Yeah, of course, right?”
“That’s right, of course,” I replied in distress before the chime rang.
Then, as I scoured through my desk looking for a textbook, I felt a sudden stare on me, so I turned around to face it.
There, the boys, including Yuuya Kariya, the most popular guy in the class, looked at us with startled faces.
What’s their problem? I wondered, but after a while, I realized.
I’m sure that it’s because no one has ever seen a boy have a normal conversation with Hasumi-san about anything other than school-related stuff. Yeah, that’s probably it.
Although I found it quite bothersome, I knew that what’s done cannot be undone, so I pretended that I had not noticed it for the time being and went about my business.
◆◆◆◆◆
It’s time for me to go to sleep.
My first class was with Yamashita-sensei, who was your standard slob who usually just scribbles stuff on the board.
I lean slightly to the left so that the person on the right can’t see me, and I slump my face below so that the back of the girl in front of me covers my face slightly.
Then, after securing the mechanical pencil with tape to ensure that it wouldn’t be dropped by accident, I shifted into the sleeping position that I had grown accustomed to.
After I woke up, I realized that I’ve been sleeping for a lot longer than I had thought. My entire body feels very stiff.
I looked at the clock whilst wondering if I could use the chair as a recliner, and saw that it was about ten minutes before the end of class.
My sense of time is far too accurate. I was able to regain my full strength without being discovered at all.
The next class is English, taught by Honda-sensei, who is known for aggressively calling out students, so I’m glad I was able to recover before that happened.
As I was planning on how to beat the teachers as if they were bosses from a game, I heard Hasumi-voice san’s coming from beside me. It was as if she was trying to hold back her laughter!
What exactly are you doing when you can clearly hear the teacher writing on the board?! I looked at her and asked, “What?” She thought for a moment and then showed me what was written in her notebook.
≪Looks like you were sleeping comfortably.≫
Hasumi-san had apparently figured out my plan. It’s quite an achievement to be able to notice my perfect scheme, isn’t it? (TLN: bruh wut)
≪ I’ll charge you a fee for looking at my sleeping face next time. ≫
≪ Then I’ll stop looking and tell the teacher next time instead. ≫
That is extremely concerning. If Hasumi-san speaks to the male teachers, I can easily imagine them becoming more worked up than usual. Even worse, they’d probably use her as a sandbag for their sermons.
≪ No, you can worship me all you want. ≫
I show my total defeat in those words, like a dog who had given up its pride and shown its belly, and once again I could hear the other side trying her best to hold back her laughter!
≪ You’re much easier to understand than I thought, Himuro-kun ≫
≪ I’m told that often… ≫
Indeed, I don’t change my facial expressions much, but I am often told by those close to me that it’s very easy to understand my thought process.
≪ I have fun talking to you. ≫
≪ Really? Well, I don’t talk to myself much. ≫
I don’t know if I’m fun to talk to or not, but I certainly don’t make conversation with anyone very often unless they are the one to approach me.
In reality, I just don’t want to spend time or care for someone whom I don’t even get along with.
And while we were having such a tedious conversation, I could hear the chime ring, signaling the end of the class.
I get up from my seat, stretch a bit, and then turn my head towards Hasumi-san.
Well, she’ll surely make me consider having a good night’s sleep.
“Please keep it a secret from now on. I’ll give you some Tirol Chocolate, even though it’s almost melted already.” (TLN: Here’s a page I could find explaining Tirol chocolates.)
In any case, I noticed I had some Tirol Chocolates in my bag that I had bought with a friend last month, and so I offered them to her as a bribe. Although it’d be quite a hassle to open the bag of the ones that are about to melt.
“Isn’t this pretty hard to open?”
“Yeah, that’s right”
That’s exactly what I said, and when I responded back to her in that way, she gave me a reprimanding, nervous-like look.
No one else would give her something like this, so it’s no surprise that she’s angry.
“Okay, fine. I’ll get you some better Tirol later.”
“Aren’t they really limited though?”
“The others are too expensive, so it’d be impossible to do so.”
Games and books cost money after all. To be honest, I’d like to see her appreciate the fact that they at least aren’t five yen chocolates.
“Fufu. All right, let’s work with that then.”
“Thank you for your consideration, well then, I’m going to the bathroom.”
There will be many people who will want to talk to her currently, so I’ll leave now to open up a place for them.
It’s not that I don’t want to talk to her. In fact, I thought she was a surprisingly interesting person to talk to.
Until yesterday, I had selfishly thought she was cold and selfish, but I apologize for that and will reflect on it in my mind.
However, the expressions on her face vary so much every time that it’s very difficult to determine what kind of person she truly is.
I don’t intend to become actively involved with her, but it would be nice to speak with her from time to time in the near future. And if I talk to her directly, I’ll try to understand who she actually is, not just what she’s like on the outside.
I headed for the bathroom with that thought in my head.
