Chapter 1 – Encounter
Makoto Himuro ①
I was born as the eldest son from a family of four, which consisted of a salaryman-like father with a somewhat highish income, a mother who acts as a housewife, a younger sister, and finally, me, a very non-sociable sort of person.
No, maybe I’m a little different. The thing is that I just don’t understand the point of making friends and hanging out with people at all. Another thing is that I also really don’t want to spend much time on anything other than what’s important to me. (TLN: OMG He’s sooo meee.)
The same was true for the things that the people around me were very eager to do. Some of them are things like being popular or maybe even getting a girlfriend. I was hardly interested in any of that, no matter how much clamor I heard about how exciting it would be to do so.
I enjoy playing with my friends, spending time with my family, and just relishing my hobbies by myself. I would be satisfied just doing all of those things for my whole life.
So, when the people around me became jealous of the fact that I was sitting next to Toru Hasumi, the ‘Goddess’ whose fame had reached even the upperclassmen, I didn’t really think that much about it.
She had beautiful black hair with a wet gleaming-like color and a pair of beautiful, glamourous, obsidian-type eyes that looked as if they could pierce into you at any moment.
Then there’s her well-defined nose that looks like it has been carved out by a master sculptor. And just looking at her seductively red, sultry, plump lips, you could just feel how
beautiful she was. (TLN: That is a very… detailed description) (EDN: Is he sure that he doesn’t pay attention to anything other than things important to him…)
She is, indeed, an extremely beautiful woman, it’s as if she was favored by God in every possible aspect of her appearance.
But if you ask me whether or not I like the way she just looks around the place as if she’s always bored all the time, and yet, rejects and refuses every invitation given to her, I
can clearly answer that I do not like that.
Besides, she probably doesn’t have even the slightest interest in me, so it doesn’t really matter anyway.
The first day we met, she had greeted me with eyes that seemed to be both looking right at me but at the same time, it felt as if she was just… seeing through me.
“Toru Hasumi. Nice to meet you.”
“Himuro Makoto. Nice to meet you too.”
Those were the first words that we had exchanged with each other. It might seem like I was getting closer with her through a conversation, but it’s really just thanks to the fact
of us being seatmates that we were able to greet each other like this.
It was clear that she was placing a wall between us looking at her attitude, and I could feel that she was rejecting the idea of getting along with me with her entire might.

The day after the seat change, I got to my seat and as I was taking my luggage out of my bag, the area around the entrance suddenly began to buzz.
Perhaps Hasumi-san arrived. And sure enough, she did.
As usual, she breaks through the crowd with her dashing and fluttering long black hair.
Then she turned away any approaching boys with her cold eyes and walked towards me, only greeting the girls on her way here.
“Good morning. Hasumi-san.”
“Good morning. Himuro-kun.”
For the time being, I decided to say a simple greeting to her. She returned my greeting in a simple manner and then looked at me suspiciously for some reason.
Did I do something wrong…?
I wondered about it for a bit, but I had no time to ask what the problem was.
“Good morning. Did you watch the drama that aired last night?”
In front of her was Yuuya Kariya, the most popular guy in the class. He was accompanied along with his entire group of friends. There were also several girls who had come to
talk to her as well.
As expected, I didn’t want to interrupt the conversation just to ask her if I had done anything wrong.
And since I had nothing better to do, I decided to listen in on the conversation that took place right next to me as if it were on the radio. I was just resting on my cheekbones
and staring at the other side of the room.
“Good morning. I haven’t seen it yet– I always end up falling asleep beforehand.”
Her voice sounded a lot softer compared to when she had greeted me earlier.
“Is that so? But it was so much fun! Right, Yuya-kun?”
“Yeah, it really was. Hasumi-san should definitely see it sometime soon.”
“Is that so?”
“Yeah-yeah. Speaking of which, Hasumi-san, do you have any favorite actors or models?”
“…Who knows”
However, she is understandably quite bitter towards men.
Well, I am impressed by the fact that the conversation is even still being continued, as expected of a handsome guy.
Her guard against the opposite sex is so tight that even engaging in small talk with her is tough, as one of my friends had once complained about.
It looks like you were right about that facial disparity theory you were advocating for after all. (TLN: Facial disparity basically means inequality based on your looks, my man is
right tho, can tell from experience)
I offered a silent prayer in my heart to my friend who wasn’t here, looking at the cruel reality that was bestowed upon us.
Amen.
◆◆◆◆◆
A few days after that, it became somewhat clear to me that Hasumi-san would not engage in conversation with any of the boys and if it was with a good-looking guy, she would reply back to them reluctantly if any other girls were nearby.
She is so famous that there were people from whole other schools that knew about her, and so she talks to various people no matter if they were her classmates or not, but I did notice that she was especially cold towards men at any time, place or occasion.
I wondered how that kind of response, which felt sort of refreshing, would look like to the girls, but she seemed to be good at winning their hearts over, and there was not the slightest sign that she was being bullied by them at all.
I became a little more interested in her, whilst thinking with my gamer brain that her way of damage control was pretty unusual. (TLN: Gamer brain (ゲーム脳, Gēmu nō) is a term coined by Akio Mori referring to the human brain affected by the long-term effect if playing video games– as per Wikipedia)
Since the class had now ended and I’m not really a part of any club activities, I returned the book that I had borrowed earlier and headed straight for the elevator entrance.
Today, I’m gonna save before the boss fight, so I was excited thinking about how I was going to defeat it.
But as I was thinking about such stuff, I suddenly noticed Hasumi-san trying to climb the stairs with some heavy luggage in her hands.
That’s a hefty burden. I would have thought that there would be plenty of people around during the daytime to help her out with this but it looks like she didn’t bother about carrying it at such a deserted time of the day.
Normally, I would try to avoid contacting her by shifting my timing with her appearance, but I decided to call out to her, as I knew I couldn’t just ignore the amount of luggage she was carrying all by herself.
“I’ll help you carry your bags.”
In response to my voice, her grim face slowly looked back at me.
A wide frown was paired with a sharp look present in her eyes.
It seems like I was meddling a bit too much. I was wondering if I would be chased away with any harsh words but she looked at me strangely and then opened her mouth.
“Thank you for saving me.”
Surprisingly, she had instead thanked me with an apologetic expression on her face.
I thought she hated men and didn’t want to talk to them at all, but I wonder if there’s some kind of line she has that prevents her from doing so.
I was a little confused but decided to shrug it off since I had originally approached her with the intention of helping her anyways.
“No, it’s alright, that amount of luggage seems to be pretty heavy for a girl. Didn’t anyone want to help you out?”
“That’s not really the case.”
She said with a vague look on her face, slightly looking away from me.
I wondered if she meant that there was someone else who had offered to help her out. I was confused by her unclear speech and manners.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have tried to help?”
“No, thank you so much for calling out to me. It means a lot for you to help with my luggage.”
“I’m glad to hear that. If you want to, you can just tell me the location and I’ll take it there myself.”
The luggage was heavy, but she was carrying it all by herself. It felt like I would have no problem carrying all this by myself.
Besides, it’s too much of a hassle to take care of her alongside the luggage, and I don’t think she wants to be alone with me either.
But then, she shook her head for some reason. Apparently, she was gonna come with me.
Another unexpected reaction, which makes it difficult for me to understand how she truly feels.
“I’ll go there. Besides, I was the one asked to do it in the first place.”
However, I liked what she had said next.
She was a responsible person who was willing to complete her own work by herself, even if she was able to have someone else do everything for her.
“Well then, you can hold this one for me.”
With that said, she had a salty look on her face when I tried to give her the obviously lighter side of the luggage.
Well, if one has a strong sense of responsibility, I can certainly understand how they’d feel, but I have my own reasons too, so I’ll quickly explain it.
“Please. I’d be done for if I was seen letting the Madonna of the whole school carry such a heavy load.”
Just thinking about it makes me feel depressed and sick to my stomach. It could threaten my peaceful school life if I didn’t do this.
“Fufu~ I thought that Himuro-kun doesn’t really change his face much, but I see that he can actually make faces like that too.”
As I was thinking about this, I heard some pleasant laughter echoing in front of me.
Apparently, my thoughts had been shown on my face.
Even I could have such an expression…
“So you’re actually human after all.”
“Pfft. Don’t make me laugh by saying that like Mitsou-san.”
I got a little carried away, and in a stilted voice, I told her some stuff that only me and my friends talk about, which seemed to get through to her, and she at least gave me asmall laugh in return.
“Sorry. But I find Hasumi-san’s smiling expression to be quite refreshing.”
I have seen her laughing a bit when she is with the girls, but it was very unusual because she doesn’t really laugh all that often.
“Is that so? No, maybe. Well, I rarely laugh except for when I’m talking with a girl.”
I thought so. I got a little excited, it felt as if I had collected a rare skill in a video game.
But as we continued to talk, I could see our destination appearing in our sight
For now, I put the luggage on the desk as she opened the door and went inside.
“I’m going home. See you tomorrow.”
My work is done, and I have no other reason to stay alone with her.
Thinking about rare skills and whatnot has rekindled my gaming fever, so I quickly tell her goodbye and end the conversation.
”Thanks a lot. See you tomorrow.”
I can’t see her face clearly due to the sunset.
But her voice sounded much softer than usual.
