Chapter 104: Parents Leaving Like a Storm
“Ah, but those kids really had some strong wills, didn’t they? I really like them, don’t I, dear?”
“…Yeah.”
After that, I somehow managed to convince the two of them, and I didn’t get dragged back to my parents’ house. For some reason, I ended up saying that I would leave after breakfast, so now I’m heading to the station to see them off.
“Still, are you sure? We came all the way to the station, you know.”
“Well, I came here to check on your living situation. We can walk around for a little while, but we’re not free all day.”
“…I see.”
I wish they would stay a little longer… As always, they’re unpredictable.
“Oh? Are you feeling a little lonely? Should I stay and keep you company, then?”
“…If you’re staying, I’ll stay too.”
“Both of you, just go home already.”
Seriously, what do they think I am? I’m already a grown adult. I feel a bit embarrassed, but I try not to show it.
If they noticed, they’d probably tease me even more.
“By the way, that beautiful girl with black hair was really pretty, wasn’t she? What was her name again? Kanna, right?”
“Ah, yes! She’s amazing at games. She’s so good, it’s almost scary…”
“…Scarlett was good too. I wanted to hear her sing.”
“Huh? Huh??”
Wait, what? Why are both of them reacting like they know all this…?
“Anyway, Yusuke, you’re in Shiorina’s videos, but you’re not causing any trouble, right? I don’t like the idea of my own son being a bother to a big-time streamer.”
“Wait, hold on… why do both of you know about this?”
“Ah, you really think you can hide things from your own parents? Right, dear?”
“…Yeah.”
“Eh? So you’ve known from the start?”
Then, why didn’t they say anything earlier? I’m confused.
“I thought something was off. You hadn’t contacted us, and suddenly you said you were staying at Makanaka-chan’s house… I never imagined you’d be staying at the house of a big-time streamer.”
“…So you knew everything and still said those things to me?”
A question suddenly arises in my mind. Even though they knew, why were they still trying to send me back?
“Well, you never know what could happen, right? Maybe you’re being deceived, or your life might not be stable. I just wanted to check… but,”
She looks back, gazing down the road, and answers calmly.
“From what I saw, I think you’ll be fine. It’s clear that everyone cares about you.”
“…Yeah.”
“…”
I’m shocked, unable to believe they really feel this strongly. But as I realize that, somehow, I see them in a new light… and I understand how great parents can be.
“Well, that’s just how parents are. Don’t make that face, okay? Worrying about their son is only natural.”
My mother laughs mischievously, and my father, as usual, remains stoic. Looking at them, I can’t help but realize that I can’t win against these two.
“…Thank you.”
The words slip out before I even realize it. But when I look at them, they tilt their heads, not understanding why I said it.
I feel an unexpected sense of embarrassment and feel my face heat up.
“…This is good enough.”
By now, we’ve reached the front of the station, and I see the cute penguin mascot.
“Are you sure you’re fine? I can walk you a little further.”
“It’s fine. I’d rather not drag this out. Saying goodbye like this feels a little strange.”
My mother seems to be joking around, but she doesn’t look like she’s really feeling sad about leaving.
“Come on, Dad. At least make sure to give a proper goodbye. We won’t see each other for a while.”
“…Yeah.”
“…What?”
“…Take care.”
“…You too, Dad.”
Even at a time like this, my dad just says one short sentence. But somehow, it feels like something stirs inside me, and I know it’s not just my imagination.
“Well, see you, Yusuke… Oh, and one more thing.”
“Huh?”
My mom suddenly remembers something.
“I think that girl is living here too, right? If you see her, tell her I said hi.”
“That girl? Who are you talking about, Mom?”
“Don’t you remember? You used to play with her a lot. The cute girl, you know?”
Before my mom can finish, the station announcement rings out. It seems the train has arrived.
“Oh no, it’s already this late. Come on, Dad, let’s go before we’re late!”
“…Yeah.”
“Ah, wait!”
And just like that, they’re gone. It was like a storm—coming and going suddenly. They said whatever they wanted and left in the blink of an eye… But I think it was good that I met them.
“…Next time, maybe I’ll at least send a message.”
I take out my phone and look at the home screen, but then I frown.
It has a message explaining that I’m living with Shiorina and the others.
“…They probably told Shouji and Makanaka about it without asking.”
I take back what I thought earlier. I don’t need to contact them after all.
Feeling a little down about what’s to come, I head toward their house.

Chapter 105: Studying for a Test
“Wow… I didn’t know that happened.”
“Yeah. It was an incredible mess… it was tough.”
During lunch break at school, Rinmei was telling Haruka about what happened when Yusuke’s parents visited.
“There’s this person named Manaka, and he was grilling Yusuke. His older brother, Soji, was trying to stop him, and… it was just crazy.”
Although Rinmei’s explanation was vague, seeing his face unusually scrunched up, Haruka couldn’t help but smile at how serious the situation must have been.
After Yusuke’s parents left, Manaka had interrogated Yusuke. His face was so intense that even Soji, Yusuke’s older brother, broke into a cold sweat. Kana and Rinmei were a little scared too.
They managed to calm things down, but when Manaka shouted, “I’ll hide Yusuke!” Kana overreacted, and things escalated even further. It took several hours before everyone finally calmed down.
“Anyway, it was a lot… I even missed lunch.”
“R-Really… a lot happened, huh?”
“…Yeah. It was sad.”
Seeing how down Rinmei looked, Haruka decided not to bring it up again and changed the topic.
“Oh! By the way, the midterms are coming up soon. Rinmei, are you studying?”
“Midterms… oh, right.”
Rinmei vaguely recalled seeing something about it but couldn’t remember the details.
“I… haven’t started studying yet. When is it?”
“I think it’s in about two weeks?”
“…There’s still time, but I should start soon.”
Rinmei let out a sigh, remembering the looming tests. While no one really wanted to study, for her, the problem was that streaming took up a lot of her time, and she felt stressed thinking about it.
“Hey, Rinmei, if you’re okay with it, would you study with me?”
“…Study?”
“Yeah. I’m not that good at studying. If you could teach me, I’d be really happy… but is that okay?”
“…Wait a minute.”
Rinmei paused, thinking. She didn’t have any friends, so she wasn’t sure how to handle situations like this.
But there was no feeling of discomfort or negative emotions. So, the answer was clear.
Looking at Haruka, who seemed anxious, Rinmei nodded and replied.
“…Yeah. I’ll teach you.”
“Really!? Thank you, Rinmei!!”
Haruka grabbed Rinmei’s hand and excitedly shook it up and down.
“H-Haruka… calm down… it’s… too much…”
Rinmei awkwardly said, but it seemed like Haruka didn’t hear her. Haruka was still shaking her hand without stopping.
Rinmei was a bit confused by Haruka’s enthusiasm, but she also couldn’t help but smile slightly, feeling a little happy herself.
“Sorry, Rinmei. I got too excited and didn’t hear you.”
“…It’s fine. No problem.”
Haruka apologized shyly, and Rinmei replied nonchalantly, not really minding it.
“…But where should we study? If it’s at school… those people might bother us.”
Rinmei’s mind briefly pictured the party girls. She was clearly annoyed by them, and her forehead wrinkled slightly.
“About that… Rinmei, I have a favor to ask.”
“A favor?”
Seeing the serious look on Haruka’s face, Rinmei felt the atmosphere shift, and she became tense.
In that moment, Haruka said.
“Could we study at your house?”
“My house?”
“Yeah. There’s no library or good place to study around here, and I can’t use my house because of some personal reasons… so, if it’s okay, could we study in your room?”
“…Mmm.”
Rinmei hesitated. Kana was probably at her place. If they ran into each other… Sayaka would find out, and it would be a hassle.
But there was no other good place… Rinmei frowned slightly and then answered.
“…Okay.”
“Really? You look a little upset, though…”
“…It’s fine. It’s just how it is.”
“R-Really? Well… thanks.”
“…Mmm.”
Rinmei knew she’d have to tell Yusuke about this later.
Thinking that, she spent the rest of the lunch break eating the homemade bento with Haruka.
