“Hmm, you guys really wrote this?”

“Y-yes. Well, it’s something my sister and Tendou-kun wrote together.”

“I see. If you’re already producing something this solid, then as far as club activities go there’s no problem with the content. But ten pages of manuscript paper isn’t gonna cut it. Tell those two to finish something the size of a whole book within the next month.”

“Th-that much?!”

“Well, a lot of the other teachers think we don’t need a book club at all. If we wanna shut them up, we need some real results.”

“…Got it. Thank you.”

I let Inoue-sensei, the book club advisor, read the manuscript and we talked it out.

We ended up chatting for almost a whole hour because she’s super nice and listens to everything.

When I finally stepped out of the staff room and checked my phone, there was a message from Mizuki a little while ago that just said “heading home first.”

“That Mizuki, always doing whatever she wants. Tendou-kun is… obviously walking home with her, right?”

I thought about texting her, but decided I’d do it once I got home.

I was about to leave school quickly when someone called out to me by the front gate.

“Heyy, Yuzuki!”

“Ayaha? Long time no see!”

“Right? Ever since we got split into different classes in second year we barely talk anymore.”

Kirishima Ayaha was in my class back in first year, and she was especially close with Mizuki. The three of us even hung out together a few times.

She’s kinda gal-looking, super pretty and slim, popular with both guys and girls, but today her face looked a little dark.

“So what’re you doing hanging around here?”

“Ah, yeah. I’ll tell you while we walk.”

We left the gate and walked a bit.

Ayaha kept glancing around nervously before speaking to me in a quieter voice.

“So actually, lately Itoi-kun from the tennis club has been super persistent. Like, he waits for me on the way home and stuff.”

“Eww, that’s scary! That’s literally stalking.”

“Right?? But we live close, so if he says it’s just a coincidence I can’t really say anything. That’s why I’ve been looking for someone to walk home with.”

“Ahh, gotcha. Everyone else has club activities, huh.”

“Exactly. And then I just happened to spot you, Yuzuki.”

“If that’s the case, leave it to me! Hey, wanna hit up karaoke while we’re at it?”

“Ooh, yes! It’s been forever.”

Seeing the color come back to Ayaha’s face made me feel relieved, and the two of us headed toward the karaoke place in front of the station.

“But seriously, guys can be such trash, right?”

“For real. Though Yuzuki, haven’t you been hanging out with some guy a lot lately? I don’t really recognize his face.”

“O-oh, that’s just the transfer student. We ended up in the same club, and he doesn’t really know how things work around here yet, so I’ve been showing him the ropes.”

“Ahh, that’s all it is? Okay. But don’t be too nice to him. I was kinda friendly with Itoi-kun at first too, and once I was nice he totally got the wrong idea. Guys are so hard to deal with.”

“Wrong idea, huh… I wonder which one of us is really misunderstanding.”

“Huh?”

“Oh, uh, nothing. Anyway, let’s sing our hearts out and forget all the annoying stuff!”

We kept chatting like that while we checked in at the karaoke place and went into our room.

It had been a while since I’d done karaoke, so I was honestly kinda excited.

“All right, let’s singgg!”

“Yesss, Yuzuki! Let’s do this!”

We punched in some songs right away.

And we started belting it out at the top of our lungs.

Like we were trying to blow away all the murky feelings inside.

“Tendou-kun, do you drink black tea?”

“Y-yes.”

“Hey, drop the formal speech. Why’re you so nervous?”

“S-sorry. It’s been a really long time since I’ve been over to someone else’s house.”

Watching Tendou-kun sitting there in our living room all shrunk up like a borrowed cat was so cute I honestly just wanted to hug him right then and there.

But I didn’t want him to think I was some super lewd girl if I suddenly did that, so I held myself back hard while I went to the kitchen to boil water.

Even just looking at his rounded back from a little ways away made my chest feel all warm.

It’s only a short little slice of happiness until Yuzuki gets home, but right now we finally managed to be completely alone together at my place.

I’ve gotta close the distance a bit more.

Yuzuki’s probably still talking with Inoue-sensei.

I did ask Sensei beforehand to really listen to Yuzuki because she’s seriously worried about something.

That teacher is super earnest and her talks go on forever.

She probably won’t be home for a while yet.

“Tendou-kun… let’s take our time and have fun today.”

“So this book is the one I bought back in middle school, and that one over there—”

“Um, Mizuki-san?”

“What’s up?”

“Y-you’re, like… kinda really close, I think.”

After brewing the tea, Mizuki brought over a whole pile of books, stacked them on the table, and started chatting away super enthusiastically. But instead of sitting on the sofa across from me, she plopped down right next to me and leaned in close while explaining each book.

The distance was just way too much.

Every now and then her slim leg brushed against my knee, and each time my whole body jolted a little while I tried to scoot back just a bit to get some space.

“Really? If I sit across from you it’s harder to explain stuff, though.”

“Y-yeah, I get that, but… I mean, what if Yuzuki comes home and sees us like this? She’d probably freak out or something.”

“Hmm, so you don’t want Yuzuki to catch us? Well yeah, when that girl gets mad it’s such a hassle. But she hasn’t texted yet, so she’s probably gonna be a while longer, don’t you think?”

“Oh right, I wonder how the talk with Sensei is going.”

“She’s surprisingly good at negotiating, so I’m not worried. Anyway, about this one right here—”

“Uh, c-can I maybe have a refill of tea?”

“Was it good?”

“Y-yeah, super good. I was thinking, like, I could go for another cup… haha.”

“Hmm, okay then. I’ll make you some more, so just wait a sec.”

Mizuki moved away from me, picked up the teacups, and headed back to the kitchen.

I let out a huge sigh.

“Phew… Mizuki-san’s sense of personal space is totally glitched, isn’t it?”

I’d heard there are girls who do a lot of casual touching or just stand way too close, but…

Maybe Mizuki’s one of those types.

She smells insanely sweet too.

If she keeps this up I’m seriously gonna start getting the wrong idea.

I wonder if other guys have had her do stuff like this to them.

…For some reason that thought made my chest feel all weird and cloudy.

“…Speaking of, Yuzuki’s taking forever, huh.”

No message or anything. Maybe the talk with Sensei isn’t going well?

And here I am just casually sipping tea while she’s dealing with that.

“Are you worried about Yuzuki?”

Mizuki came up behind me while I kept glancing at the clock.

“Ah, no, well… kinda.”

“But yeah, she is taking a while. I’ll just LINE her… or actually, Tendou-kun, why don’t you do it?”

“Me?”

“Yeah. She’ll probably be happier if it’s from you. If it’s me we might just end up arguing again.”

“O-okay.”

I sent Yuzuki a LINE.

While I waited for a reply, Mizuki poured more tea into my cup. The nice smell helped me relax a little, and then—

“Oh, she replied… huh?”

“What’s wrong? Something about the clubroom?”

“No, look at this.”

The message said:

‘I’m at karaoke right now but I need help’

“Help…? Did something happen?”

“Karaoke around here probably means the one by the station…”

I immediately asked what was going on, but it stayed on delivered.

I jumped up in a panic.

“Mizuki-san, I’m gonna head out for a bit.”

“Huh? Then I’ll come too—”

“No, I don’t want you getting dragged into whatever this is. It’s the karaoke place in front of the station, right?”

“Y-yeah. That’s the only one Yuzuki and I have ever gone to together.”

“Got it. I’ll be back.”

I quickly put my shoes on and rushed out of Mizuki’s house.

“Ahh, that felt so good. Screaming really helps, huh.”

“Yuzuki, wanna do this one next? Oh wait, lemme grab us some drinks first.”

We were only supposed to sing for an hour and then head home, but it was so fun we ended up extending a little.

This was the first time I was hanging out with just me and Ayaha, but we clicked super well.

“I’ll pick this one when she gets back~”

I fiddled with the remote while waiting for Ayaha.

But she was taking forever to come back, so I decided to go check on her while grabbing the drinks.

And then—

“Ayaha, didn’t you say you were busy today? So why’re you at karaoke?”

“T-that’s none of your business. I’m here with a friend, so just stop.”

Right in front of the drink bar, some guy had grabbed Ayaha by the arm and was bugging her.

That’s definitely Itoi-kun.

That guy’s a legit stalker.

“…I gotta help her.”

I have to get Ayaha out of there.

But Itoi-kun’s taller than I thought.

If I go over there alone I might just get dragged into it too… No, she’s my friend and she’s in trouble—I can’t just stand here.

“…Ah.”

While I was hesitating, a LINE came in.

From Tendou-kun: ‘Everything go okay with Sensei?’

Without thinking, I shot him a quick message.

Help.

He’ll come.

I just had this feeling he would.

And then,

“Hey, can’t you see that Ayaha doesn’t like it? Knock it off.”

I headed straight over to where Ayaha and Itoi-kun were.
