Chapter 28 : A Maiden In Love?
This was the most memorable moment in Flora’s life.
A memory from when she played with a certain boy.
“Hey, Flora! What are you doing in a place like this?”
“Oh, Marius-kun. I’m making a flower crown right now.”
“A crown? Wouldn’t you rather have one made of solid gold instead of something so cheap?”
“This is special in its own way. It has a simple beauty to it.”
“Hmm… I don’t get it at all.”
“Then why don’t you try making one with me? If you do, I’m sure you’ll understand the charm of a flower crown.”
“Huh? You really think I can do something so girly? That’s just weird. Stuff like this is for plain people like you, Flora.”
“Really? We’re just kids, so I don’t think it matters that much.”
“Ugh… Well, if you insist that much, I guess I have no choice. I’ll help you make that… whatever it is.”
“Hehe~, thank you, Marius-kun. I’ll show you how to do it.”
At first, Flora thought Marius was just like any other noble child.
She knew that nobles rarely mingled with activities of commoners.
So, she didn’t take offense at Marius’s attitude. To her, that was just normal.
Even so, she still liked that he played with her.
Back then, Flora always played alone.
“Ugh, what the heck… This is way harder than I thought. I can’t make it look good at all!”
“Here, like this… See? I think you’re using too much force, Marius-kun. You have to be gentler, like you’re handling something precious.”
“Something precious? Don’t be ridiculous. There’s no way I could treat this trash like a treasure. My treasures are way more amazing than this!”
“T-Trash?”
“Yeah, it’s trash. It’s just a crown made of weeds picked off the ground.”
“That’s horrible! This isn’t trash! You’re being so mean, Marius-kun!”
It all started with a small quarrel.
Because of his personality, Marius ended up making Flora unusually angry.
“What’s the big deal? I’m just calling trash what it is! Why are you suddenly mad?!”
Frustrated, Marius tossed the half-finished crown away and stood up.
His motivation and focus completely drained, he stomped off in irritation.
“Ah… W-Wait, Marius-kun! I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I said too much…”
Fearing being left alone, Flora apologized.
But her words never reached Marius.
His figure soon disappeared from sight.
“Marius-kun… sniff…”
Silence surrounded Flora.
Loneliness took over, and she began to cry.
Her quiet sobs echoed for a while.
Then, after some time, exhaustion took over, and she fell asleep—tears still trailing down her cheeks, a sorrowful expression frozen on her face.
◇◇◇◇◇◇
How much time had passed?
When Flora finally woke up, she found Marius lying down beside her.
“Marius-kun… Why are you here…?”
Had he come back at some point?
As that question surfaced in her mind, she suddenly felt something odd on her head.
She reached up and touched it.
There, she found a clumsily made flower crown — one that she hadn’t crafted herself.
It was clear who had made it.
“Did you… make this for me?”
After she had cried herself to sleep, Marius must have noticed.
Perhaps as an apology, he had tried to make a flower crown for her.
And then, he had even placed it on her head as a gift.
Flora’s heart fluttered.
It was a simple, childlike reaction.
But at that moment, she truly felt happy about his gift.
“Mmm…”
Marius suddenly rolled over in his sleep.
His head ended up resting near Flora’s lap.
For some reason, she gently lifted his head and placed it on her lap—giving him a lap pillow.
The moment she did, his expression softened.
It was as if all his exhaustion had melted away, leaving behind only happiness.
That sight filled her heart with warmth once again.
“Flo…ra…?”
But because of that, Marius slowly opened his eyes.
Feeling a little guilty, Flora spoke.
“Ah, sorry… Did I wake you up?”
“No… it’s fine. And… sorry. I went too far earlier… That crown… It really suits you, Flora… Like a princess…”
Her heart skipped a beat.
No, it felt like it had leaped.
More than ever before.
It was probably nothing more than sleepy mumbling, almost like sleep-talking.
But at that moment, Marius was uncharacteristically sweet and honest.
And it completely stole Flora’s heart.
Before she even realized it, Flora had fallen in love with Marius.
That was why she couldn’t bring herself to abandon him.
She believed that one day, Marius would regain the smile and purity he once had.
But in reality, that wish would never come true.
Marius would grow up to be nothing but wicked and cruel.
However, in this worldline, he was Marius, yet not the same Marius she used to know.
And that change was now leading them toward a new love.
