Episode 5: Eidetic Memory

“You could say it’s akin to what they call a ‘Photographic Memory.’ I can usually remember everything after seeing or hearing them just once.”

“I’ve heard of it in fiction, but this is my first time meeting someone who actually has it… I kind of feel honored.”

“Ehehe. Please don’t make such a big deal out of it; it makes me so shy… Still it’s not all rainbows with this, you know?”

Here I was, having a conversation with ‘that’ Hoshimiya Hime after school.

Even though it was kind of surreal, but also, eventually, I started to wonder if I was making her considerate of me as she talks.

I don’t know if it was all thanks to Hoshimiya-san, but I felt a lot more relaxed. In time, I thought it was about time for me to head home soon. Although I was enjoying our conversation, I figured I should really head home after the talk on this topic wraps up.

While thinking that in my mind, I carefully listened to what she said. The fact that she has an amazing ability of photographic memory, but as per her, it wasn’t actually all a blessing.

“For example, first, I don’t do well with content that has a lot of information. I struggle especially with television and the internet… if I watch for too long, all the information starts flooding in my head, and I end up feeling uncomfortable.”

“…I see.”

So that’s why Hoshimiya-san doesn’t seem to know much about the world around her.

Things like convenience stores, or the bamboo shoot choco-snacks are things she could have seen at some point if she had watched TV or went online in net. But since she avoids media, it makes sense she wouldn’t know about them.

“Well, my attendants take care of everything around me, so it’s not really inconvenient. Just that there are a lot of things I don’t know about the world around me… So, I have a favor to ask of you, Yohei-kun.”

“A favor?”

Honestly, I was ready to agree to anything she asked, but given I also wanted to know what she wanted to ask of me, I pressed her to say the complete request.

Just what could someone like her request from someone like me?

“Well… if it’s not a bother, can you teach me about various things? About snacks, and of course about the convenience stores as well, and also about everything that is supposed to be common general knowledge in this world—I want to know about them.”

What she wanted was common general knowledge.

Considering her brilliance and her somewhat otherworldly lifestyle, it wasn’t surprising that she’d be lacking in common sense about the everyday world such as this.

For someone like me, who’s as average as it gets, this wasn’t a difficult task at all.

“Of course it’s fine with me. If there’s anything you don’t know, feel free to ask me.”

“R-Really!? Yay, I’m so happy♪ I’m glad I asked you, Yohei-kun… Thank you so much!”

When I nodded in agreement, her wide, round eyes sparkled with excitement.

She was even happier than I’d imagined, and seeing her like that made me feel warm inside, too.

I mean, I was being relied upon someone as amazing as her. How could I not feel a bit of pride in that? It was like my sense of self-worth was overflowing.

“Well, then, a question right away, um… I was wondering, are there other types of snacks like the one I just ate? I’ve been curious about it this whole time…!”

“Un, actually, besides the bamboo shoot (takenoko) choco-snack shapes, there’s also a mushroom-shaped (kinoko) version.”

“M-Mushrooms!? That’s —quite an unusual shape for a snack… I wonder how it tastes different?”

“The bamboo shoots choco-snack you ate earlier have a cookie base, but the mushrooms one uses a cracker base, so the taste and texture are different and is overall quite interesting you know.”

“…Oh no pwease dwon’t, I’m stwarting to dwrool just thwinking abwout it.”

“Should I bring some tomorrow?”

“—–Please! Pwease, Plwease do. Yay♪ Thank you~!”

And so, for a while longer after that, I was bombarded with constant questions.

Watching Hoshimiya-san learn new things, be surprised, and get excited… was really fun.
