Episode 42: Accepting Kindness Honestly (Also Episode 41)
When Hime took a bite of the Chocolate Pie Bites, she held her cheeks softly and bounced ~pyon ~pyon, lightly on the sofa.
“Mmm♪ Yohei-kun, it’s so crispy!”
“Un, this texture is quite irresistible, right? Want another one?”
“Yes! Ah, but this time, I’d like to examine it closely as well, so could you place it on my palm?”
Following her request, as I unwrapped another chocolate pie treat and placed it on her small hand. Hime leaned in close, observing the snack. Her previous normal happy expressions were now transformed into a serious contemplation—completely different from the smile she wore just moments ago.
She was examining the treat intently.
Just as I thought, she must really love sweet treats. That side of her felt so childlike, and incredibly endearing.
“I see… thin pastry layers are stacked upon one another to create this texture, don’t they?”
“I read about this online, it seems that they put together 64 layers, one on another, in each piece.”
“Is that so? No wonder it felt so different from an ordinary pie… By the way, is this another snack that everyone eats regularly?”
“Yeap, I also eat them pretty often for snacks or between meals.”
“U~gh… I feel like I’ve wasted my life up till this point. Knowing this and the mushroom and bamboo snacks now, I started feeling like I’ve lived a worthless time up till now.”
That much!?
Her reaction seemed a little exaggerated, but if this was her first time tasting these sweets, it wasn’t probably surprising she felt that way, or so I reconsidered.
As I think I had ate them even before I could figure my surroundings, so I can’t even remember the first time I’d eaten these snacks—. But for someone experiencing them for the first time, that too after grown up a lot, it must be a whole new world to them to experience for sure.
“Well then, I’ll have the second one now as well. Nom♪”
Saying that, without any hesitation, Hime leaned forward and bit into the chocolate pie I held on my hand—as if it were normal.
Her warm breath and soft lips brushed against my skin, sending a faint tickling sensation to me.
“….Yohei, this is bad! There are only a few left of these!?”
And just then, as a sudden exclamation came from Sei, who had been silent for a while till now. I glanced at the box and found—surprisingly more than half of the chocolate pies had vanished without me noticing.
“How could so many disappear so fast…? Maybe it’s a ghostly thing?”
“No, it’s because or your fault, Oneechan. You’ve been eating them one after another. It’s only natural that we run out of them, you know?”
“—–Eh? But I had not eaten that many at all you know? At most, only about three, I guess?”
“Then, what are all those empty wrappers on the table?”
Right in front of Sei-san, a pile of crumpled wrappers which once held the Chocolate Pie Bitess lay scattered, undeniable the person guilty was none other than Sei-san.
“Arre…? T–this must be a lie, I don’t even remember eating that many, and yet, so many have just!”
“After all, they’re bite-sized, so your hand probably couldn’t stop.”
“Ugh… Hime-chan, Yohei, I’m so sorry! You guys can have the rest.”
“Don’t worry about it. I know you didn’t mean any harm, Oneechan… So I don’t mind you eating more… Ah, on a second thought, you shouldn’t. Cause if you eat any more, you’ll start complaining about gaining weight again.”
“S-Staph bringing up my weight!”
As usual, the Hoshimiya sisters were as close as ever—watching them always warmed my heart.
Sei immediately apologized when she realized what she had done, and Hime, understanding her elder sister’s faults too, and accepting it without any fuss.
Of course, I didn’t care about those stuff either.
“It’s fine not apologizing for it, really. I’ll just buy more next time I want to eat… So Hime, you can have the rest.”
“Are you sure? Ehehe, Yohei-kun is so kind, I love you! You’d definitely make a wonderful Oniichan. Thank you so much!”
As I gave up all the left ones to Hime, her face lit up in vibrant joy.
What I liked most about her was how she accepted people’s kindness without hesitation.
Because she can be so honestly happy like that, it just makes me want to keep doing things for her—again and again, in even other ways——.
