Episode 21: Even in the Mushroom vs. Bamboo Shoot Debate

“This… this is…!”

Sei-san, having just tasted the mushroom-shaped(Kinoko) chocolate snack, stood up with a dramatic shake of her entire body.

It was like, she had been struck a lightning like impact on her body.

“Y-Yohei, why didn’t you tell me about this?”

“Fueh? A—about w-what, you mean?”

“I’m asking why you kept such a delicious treat hidden from me. I am asking, just why did you keep it a secret from me I am asking.”

“Even if you say that, considering how we only just met today, so it’s kind of impossible for me in all ways possible…”

…Nope, just wait a second there.

Just why am I being scolded here?

I couldn’t help but feel like I was being blamed unfairly for something.

“Onee-chan, please calm down a bit. I understand that it’s so delicious that you feel like getting mad instead, but Yohei-kun isn’t at fault here.”

“Hime-chan…! Y-You’re right. Really sorry, Yohei. It was just so delicious that I felt like I’d been missing this out my whole life, and I couldn’t help but get angry instead.”

“That much…?”

“This was the first time I’ve ever seen Onee-chan get angry now, wasn’t it.”

“That Much…!?”

Hime’s first reaction was quite amusing too, but Sei-san’s reaction went way beyond that.

For sheltered young ladies like them, it seemed that such a humble confectionaries of normal people had a truly shocking impact.

It was so delicious that it made her feel as though her life had been a waste without it, which, in turn, made her angry.

…Just what kind of life has she been living till now? I couldn’t help but feel surprised instead even acknowledging the existence of such sheltered young ladies.

In any case… given how pleased they are, I’ll just register it as ‘all’s good’ now.

“Fuu~n… I see. So you can buy these at a *konbini*? By the way, just how do they —-Ufufu, oh Yohei, now now, don’t joke around. There’s no way they could be that chea… Eh? Really? This is considered a regular, everyday snack for normal people!? Fueaaa~ Shyo incredible. Zhis whorld… shyo amazhing…!”

Just like I explained to Hime, when I explained to Sei-san again, She listened to it intently, making even more astonishingly, even more expressive face than her little sister.

I had thought Hime was quite naïve and all, but it might as well be that Sei-san was even more so among the two.

For a while, Sei-san nibbled on the snack while staring blankly into the distance. How do I say, her gaze somewhat vacant. Kind of unfocused, as if peering into the distant tomorrow.

“Onee-chan, do you want to try on the bamboo shoot ‘Takenoko’ one too? There’s just one piece left though.”

Hime, who had been quietly watching over her Elder sister, gently placed the bamboo shoot-shaped ‘Takenoko’ snack into Sei-san’s mouth.

It seemed that, for this sibling pair, the younger sister was the more responsible one. Watching Hime’s caring for her elder sister like that, was truly heartwarming.

“Thank you, Hime-chan… This—this one’s delicious too! But I think… I like the mushroom one better~.”

“I totally understand. That one’s delicious too after all.”

“Un. The bamboo shoots ‘takenoko’ and mushrooms ‘kinoko’ were both tasty… Honestly, I think I might prefer these over the real thing.”

“So true. Since, these makes me get a better feel of real happiness instead.”

I don’t think that even the manufacturers imagined that their product would surpass the real thing in someone’s opinion.

Since both sisters are refined young ladies, maybe they’re more accustomed to eating the actual foods than these snacks while they are modelled after.

As expected, the snacks which came out of the result of fierce market competition. It even managed to captivate both Hime and Sei-san.

…Well, society does tend to divide into factions over whether the mushrooms ‘kinoko’ or bamboo ‘takenoko’ shoots are better.

But even though the sisters’ preferences differed, they didn’t let it create any hostility. Instead, they shared their respectful joy with each other.

That’s just how close Hime and Sei-san are in life.

And so, we spent a peaceful lunchtime together.

The Hoshimiya siblings… the more I get to know them, the more mysterious they seem.
