The day before White Day.
“So, do you want it or not?”
Since Mizuki was still holding the macaron I had offered, I asked if she wanted it.
“But, since I made these to give to you, Ao-kun, it wouldn’t be right for me to—”
“Here, go ahead,” I interrupted, bringing the macaron to her lips again. This time, she took a bite, her lips brushing against my fingertips.
“You really did want to eat it, huh?”
“I-it’s because you insisted, Ao-kun…”
“Thank you for the macarons. They were delicious.”
“Yes, I’m glad to hear that, especially since it was my first time making them,” she said, her face lighting up with a pleased expression.

On the day the school went on break after the tests, Mizuki and Kana visited a newly opened café called “Kurage.”
“You’re too slow! Mi-chan, you need to be more assertive!” Kana said, exasperated as she listened to Mizuki’s story.
“Even if you say that, I think overdoing it might not be a good idea,” Mizuki replied.
The truth was, Mizuki had planned to confess to Ao on Valentine’s Day. However, she ended up saying something vague and left it at that.
“Why didn’t you confess, by the way?” Kana asked.
“I was about to, but when I thought about how it might ruin our current relationship, I couldn’t. Spending time with Ao-kun as we are now is the greatest happiness for me,” Mizuki said, revealing her true feelings.
Kana, picturing Ao in her mind, murmured, “I see,” as if she had realized something.
The reason there was no progress between Ao and Mizuki was probably because they were similar. Both preferred to keep things as they were, thinking it was best not to change the current relationship, which prevented them from moving forward.
“So, if you understood Ao’s feelings for you, you’d be able to confess?” Kana asked.
“I’m not sure… By the way, how did you end up dating Maeyama-kun?” Mizuki inquired.
“I got close to Kota when we joined the same committee. I confessed to him, and to my surprise, it turned out we both had feelings for each other!”
Unlike Ao, who would have found this love story tedious, Mizuki listened intently.
“That’s wonderful, mutual feelings,” Mizuki remarked.
“Mutual feelings… I think you and Ao feel the same way about each other,” Kana muttered softly. She wanted to somehow bring Ao and Mizuki together, but it seemed quite challenging.
“Changing the subject, the year is almost over. We just got close, but if we end up in different classes, we might not talk as much,” Kana said.
“Even if we’re in different classes, we can still meet during breaks and after school,” Mizuki replied.
“True, but the classroom will feel a bit lonely without you, Mi-chan.”
“Thank you for saying that. I’d feel a bit lonely without you too, Kana-san,” Mizuki said.
Although there were always people around Mizuki, not all of them were close friends. Kana was one of the few girls Mizuki felt truly comfortable with.
“It’s really nice to hear that. I hope we end up in the same class,” Kana said cheerfully.
“Yes, I hope so too,” Mizuki agreed.
After leaving the café, they headed to a clothing store. On the way, Kana ran into someone she knew and left Mizuki’s side.
“Hey, Saya-chan!” Kana called out.
“Oh, Kana. Please stop calling me Saya-chan. I prefer Sa-chan,” said Hasekura Sayaka, a girl from a different class at the same school with a peculiar preference for her nickname. Kana and Sayaka had been close since middle school.
“Oh, come on, drop the weird nickname thing. Anyway, let me introduce you to someone. This is Tsuyuzaki Mizuki.”
Kana introduced Mizuki to Sayaka, who nodded and bowed slightly.
“No need for introductions, she’s famous as the most beautiful girl in our grade. Nice to meet you, Tsuyuzaki-san. Feel free to call me Sayaka,” Sayaka said.
“Nice to meet you, Sayaka-san. How do you two know each other?” Mizuki asked.
“We went to middle school together. Honestly, I’m surprised. I thought Tsuyuzaki-san would be more… reserved.”
“Reserved… do you really think so?”
“Yeah, you have this aura about you. Not unapproachable, but sort of intimidating? Oh, I’m sorry if that was rude…”
“No, it’s okay,” Mizuki reassured her, but Kana quickly stepped in.
“Don’t make her uncomfortable, Saya-chan. Are you out shopping with someone?”
“I’m not trying to make her uncomfortable… I’m just on my way to a store while my family is having dinner. See you around,” Sayaka said.
“Okay, see you,” Kana replied.
After parting ways with Sayaka, Mizuki and Kana continued to the clothing store.

March 13th. I ran into Mizuki by chance at the supermarket, and we started chatting.
“Kana?”
“Yes, she picked it out for me. Does it look good?” Mizuki asked, doing a little twirl in front of me.
She was wearing a long skirt and a spring jacket, both of which suited her perfectly. Kana’s sense of style was impressive.
“Yeah, it looks great. Your hairstyle is different too,” I noted.
Mizuki usually wore her hair down at school, but on her days off, she sometimes changed her hairstyle, which often caught me off guard. Today, she had her hair in twin tails just below her ears.
“I thought it would be nice to change things up a bit… By the way, are you running errands, Ao-kun?”
“Yeah, I was asked to buy some flour, but I can’t seem to find it,” I admitted.
“Let me help you look for it.”
“No, it’s okay. You seem to be in the middle of shopping too,”
“It’s faster to find it together than alone. Besides, when you’re in trouble, you should rely on others, right?”
‘Just as you helped me that day, now it’s my turn to help you,’ so I decided to rely on her.
“Thank you. Because of you I was able to find it.” I said, grateful for her help.
“Don’t mention it. I’m glad we found it.”
“Mizuki, do you have any plans for tomorrow?”
“No, I don’t have any plans.”
“I have something I want to give you. Can we meet up?”
“Sure. How about we meet at the library at 10? I was planning to read some books there tomorrow.”
“Sounds good. See you at the library tomorrow,” I agreed.
Her smile made my heart skip a beat and stayed with me long after we parted ways.
