When you look at me so directly and call me cute, it’s a bit overwhelming.
February 14th. Today, about half of my classmates were restless. Naturally, the majority of this half were boys. I could hear conversations about whether they would receive chocolates from the girls. In the midst of this, Kouta and I were also talking about chocolates.
“So, Ao, do you think you’ll get some from Tsuyuzaki-san?”
“I never said I would.”
Even if Mizuki did give me some, I doubt it would be homemade. She mentioned she wasn’t good at cooking. Wait, why am I getting my hopes up?
“Of course, I’m definitely getting some from Kana.”
“Yeah, yeah, lucky you.”
“Here’s some good news: Kana said she’s got one for you too. But it’s just friendship chocolate.”
“I figured as much.”
“Just making sure you don’t get the wrong idea when you get it. Imagine mistaking it for romantic chocolate—”
“She has a boyfriend. Why would I make that mistake?”
When I lightly pointed this out, Kouta started laughing for some reason. I never understood what he found so amusing.
“Good morning, Kouta, Ao. I made chocolates,” Kana said as she handed some to Kouta and then, for some reason, gave me a cheeky grin as she handed me mine. What’s with that smile…?
“Thanks, Kana. Sorry if they’re too precious to eat.”
“Come on, I made them to be eaten!”
Listening to there nonsensical conversation, I looked at the small box of chocolates Kana had given me.
“Ao-kun, I can see you’re suspicious, but there’s nothing weird in them. They’re just normal chocolates.”
That “normal” is what makes it scary. Well, I’ll eat them since she gave them to me.
“I wonder who Tsuyuzaki-san will give hers to.”
“Every guy wants to be the one. But Mi-chan is probably going to give it to you, Ao.”
“Me?”
“Yeah. I mean, she likes you, doesn’t she? Oh, look, there she is.”
I glanced towards the classroom entrance and saw Mizuki greeting our classmates. After taking her seat, she started talking to Ogasawara-san and didn’t seem like she was going to come over to us.
“She’s as popular as ever. By the way, Kana, how do you always manage to invite her to lunch?”
“I just say, ‘I’m borrowing Mi-chan!’ and get permission from her close friends to bring her over. Sometimes girls glare at me just for bringing Mi-chan to where the boys are.”
That’s intimidating. Why would anyone glare just because she brings her over to where the boys are?
“Ao, should I call Mi-chan over?”
“Why?”
“Why? Because you have something you want to talk to her about, right? Like asking if she has any chocolates for you.”
I never said I wanted to ask that.
“By the way, where’s Kana?”
When I asked Kouta, he pointed to where Mizuki was.
“Kana’s over there.”
A little later, Kana came back with Mizuki in tow. Does this mean I have to ask if she has any chocolates for me?
“I brought Mi-chan!”
This isn’t fair! Mizuki looks like she’s wondering what’s going on.
“Good morning, Mizuki.”
“Good morning, Ao-kun.”
“ “…” “
As the silence dragged on, Kana lightly tapped my shoulder, indicating that I should say something.
“Today is Valentine’s Day, but Mi-chan, do you have any plans to give chocolates to anyone?”
Kana asked the question for me since I couldn’t bring myself to.
“Yes, I do. I made chocolates for Ao-kun, Kana-san, and Maeyama-kun. Can we have lunch together?”
“Of course, let’s eat together. Did you make them yourself?”
“Y-yes… I’m good at making chocolates.”
So, she can make chocolates even though she said she wasn’t good at cooking.
“In that case, I’ll also hand out my chocolates to everyone at lunch. Don’t worry, Mi-chan, I have some for you too.”
“Thank you.”
During the lunch break, it turned into a bit of a chocolate-giving event. Although I felt the stares of the boys around us, having Kana and Kouta there prevented any weird rumors from spreading.
After school, I asked Kouta and Kana to go ahead without me and left the classroom a bit later. As I walked down the corridor and passed by the faculty room, Mizuki came out just at that moment.
“Did something happen?”
“Oh, Ao-kun. The teacher asked if I wanted to join the student council.”
“Are you going to join?”
“No, I declined. Are you heading home now, Ao-kun?”
“Yeah, I am…”
“In that case, could you spare a moment?”
We went back to the classroom, and I waited in the hallway while Mizuki went inside to get her bag. She came out shortly after.
“Ao-kun, here you go. It’s Valentine’s chocolate.”
She handed me a paper bag.
Wait, this is the second time today… I already received chocolates from Mizuki during lunch. So, why a second one?
“T-the one earlier was friendship chocolate. This one is neither friendship nor obligatory.”
As I took the paper bag from Mizuki, I wondered, is this a genuine Valentine’s chocolate?
“Thank you.”
“No, thank you, Ao-kun. You’ve always been so kind and supportive.”
“Can I eat it now?”
“Of course, go ahead.”
Since the classroom was still open and empty, I went in and sat at my desk. Mizuki followed me but remained standing, so I borrowed the chair from the adjacent desk and offered it to her.
“Thank you,” she said as she sat down.
“Are these macarons?”
“Yes, they are. I thought just plain chocolates would be boring, so I decided to make chocolate macarons.”
Inside the paper bag was a rectangular box containing four macarons. I picked one up and took a bite, savoring the sweet flavor that spread through my mouth.
I don’t usually eat macarons, but these are delicious…
“How is it?” she asked.
“It’s really good.”
“I’m glad you like it.”
I ate the second and third macarons, then picked up the last one and brought it to her lips.
“Aren’t you going to eat it?”
“You looked like you wanted to try one.”
“Wha—no, I wasn’t!” she said, blushing and covering her face with her hands, but her ears were also red, making me chuckle softly.
“Don’t laugh…”
“You’re cute.”
“I’m happy you think I’m cute, but I might get the wrong idea.”
“Wrong idea? I meant it; you really are cute.”
Mizuki lowered her hands but looked down when I said this.
“When you look at me so directly and call me cute, it’s a bit overwhelming.”
“I’m not sure what you mean, but I’m sorry for making you uncomfortable…”
As I said this, I patted her head like usual, and she smiled happily.
“I’ll forgive you because it’s you, Ao-kun.”
TL: call me cute too please….
