The Otherworld Was Way Too Brutal – After I Healed the Mutilated Girl, She Turned Into a Completely Obsessed Yandere Guard Dog - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
People head outside to take down magic beasts for all kinds of reasons.
First one:
If they don’t thin them out regularly, the area outside the walls ends up crawling with magic beasts.
The more of them there are, the crazier the danger level gets out there.
And second:
They need the loot—like hides and meat—from the magic beasts.
Pretty much all the normal animals in this world got wiped out by magic beasts.
The tiny handful left are kept alive inside the walls just for the nobles.
Apparently the fancy folks eat animal meat on special celebration days or whatever.
So yeah, if you wanna eat meat or make clothes, you’ve gotta hunt magic beasts.
That’s why people risk their lives and go outside to hunt them.
Late at night.
A loud banging came from the door.
I jumped up and opened it.
“Another bad injury?”
“Yeah. This one’s really messed up.”
The usual guy was there and gave me the short version.
Tsugumi had woken up too and was watching me all worried.
The guy glanced at her but didn’t say anything.
“This way.”
“Got it.”
I followed the guy.
Leaving Tsugumi alone made me a little uneasy, but couldn’t be helped.
When I got there with him, a man was lying in a pool of blood—his right shoulder and everything past it was just gone.
“It’s okay, big brother! Jin’s here now! Just hang on a little longer!”
There was a girl right next to the guy.
She was holding his hand tight and talking to him like that.
Same as always, but man, the wound looked nasty.
I fought back the urge to puke and used my healing magic.
Light wrapped around the guy’s right shoulder, and bit by bit the wound started closing up.
“Guaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!”
The guy screamed from the insane pain.
My healing magic wasn’t some perfect cure-all.
When I used it, it hurt like hell for the person, and it drained a ton of their stamina too.
Probably the price for forcing the wound shut like that.
Plus it didn’t close instantly.
Sure, it was faster than normal healing, but it wasn’t like “oh it’s suddenly closed” fast.
Slowly, thin skin started forming over the guy’s shoulder wound, then flesh began bubbling up and growing out from there.
The guy kept passing out from the pain and getting shaken awake over and over.
After a while, the wound finally closed completely.
“……Phew.”
I wiped the sweat off my face.
I wasn’t hurting as bad as the patient, but using the magic really took it out of me too.
Once I made sure the wound was fully closed, I finally let out a breath.
“Is he… really okay now…?”
“Yeah. The wound’s closed.”
The girl asked me, and I nodded.
Then she burst out crying really loud and just collapsed.
The guy was still out cold.
She cried for a bit, then stood up and bowed her head to me.
“Thank you so much for saving my brother.”
Brother, huh.
Made sense.
No wonder they looked kinda similar.
“Nah, it’s just my job.”
“But… I’ll never forget this favor.”
People thank me all the time.
I save someone, they’re grateful.
There are probably tons of people in this town who call me their lifesaver or whatever.
But from my side, they’re the ones I owe.
I can eat meat, wear warm fur clothes—all because of them.
We’re all just holding each other up to survive.
Besides, I only stopped the bleeding.
I didn’t regenerate the missing part.
They’re gonna have to keep living with that disadvantage from now on.
Just thinking about it hurt my chest.
So yeah, I always felt like “favor” or “debt” was too much for me.
The guy woke up.
“Ugh…”
“Big brother!”
“……Leia, huh.”
“Big brother! Jin saved you!”
At what the girl called Leia said, the brother turned his eyes toward me.
“Thank… you…”
“Don’t mention it. I just did what I could.”
He thanked me again, and I brushed it off like usual.
The guy pushed himself up to sit.
Then he looked at me, and over at Leia.
“Leia.”
“……What is it, big brother?”
“I can’t go outside anymore.”
Leia’s eyes widened for a second at his words, then she looked away and nodded.
“Yeah… I know.”
“Right. We just lost our way to make a living.”
Yeah, figured.
This brother was probably the one hunting magic beasts to keep them going.
Selling the meat, selling the hides—that’s how they survived.
But now that he got hurt, he couldn’t fight magic beasts anymore.
His right arm was gone from the shoulder down.
No matter how hard he tried, he wasn’t fighting anything like that.
Finding a new way to eat from here was gonna be rough.
I felt bad for them.
It was sad.
But sympathy alone doesn’t feed people.
There was nothing I could do.
…Nothing?
Really?
“Leia.”
“……Big brother.”
The guy had this look like he’d made up his mind.
Leia seemed to sense something and her face looked like she was about to cry.
“Go to the church.”
“But big brother…”
“I’m done. They saved my life, but like this I can’t do anything anymore.”
I’d seen plenty of people steel themselves like that.
Every time, I couldn’t do a damn thing.
But this time was different.
There was something I wanted to learn from him.
“Hey.”
I spoke up.
Both the guy and Leia looked over at me.
“Could you teach me how to fight magic beasts?”
I figured maybe killing magic beasts was what I needed to level up the skill.
That’s why I asked.
When they heard my request, both of them opened their eyes wide in surprise.
