Chapter 4: The Angel’s Longing and Her Absolute Favorite Thing
The Angel and I, tasked with a week of health committee duties together, were set to do inventory checks of the school’s restrooms again after school the next day.
After the seventh period ended, I headed to the Nurse’s Office.
“Excuse me…?”
As I entered, just like yesterday, Sano-sensei, the school nurse, was nowhere to be seen. Inside the Nurse’s Office, a female student was sitting on a chair, and the Angel was crouched in front of her, tending to something.
“Yukino? What are you…?”
When I got closer, it looked like the Angel was treating a female student who had scraped her knee.
The Angel dipped some cotton in disinfectant with tweezers, gently dabbed it on the student’s wound, and then placed a large bandage over it.
I was impressed by how skillfully she handled it.
“You’re all set…”
“Thank you, Yukino-san.”
“…Take care.”
The treated student gave a quick bow of thanks, grabbed her bag from the floor, and left the Nurse’s Office.
“Helping out an injured person? That’s pretty great.”
“…It’s no big deal. Just the usual.”
The Angel spoke coolly as she cleaned up the tools she’d used.
Despite her beautiful appearance, she was, as always, a bit standoffish.
“I came to do the inventory check like yesterday. Where’s Sano-sensei?”
“…Smoking, she said.”
Got it, cigarettes.
Someone, anyone, please fire that school nurse already.
“But probably, it’s some other reason.”
“She said she’s smoking, didn’t she?”
“Yeah… but that woman… she’s broke.”
The Angel, despite her looks, doesn’t hold back with her words, does she?
“I’ve got the checklist… shall we go?”
The Angel lightly pinched the sleeve of my uniform with about the force of a grain of salt.
“O-Oh…”
I was a little surprised that the Angel would say “let’s go” first.
I left my bag in the Nurse’s Office, slung the basket of toilet paper over my arm, and walked out with the Angel, checklist in hand.
✳︎✳︎
We started on the fourth floor, just like yesterday.
The difference today was that I had to keep in mind the Angel’s narcolepsy.
Worried that she might suddenly fall asleep while checking the girls’ restroom, I tried to finish the boys’ restroom checks as quickly as possible so I could wait for her outside the girls’ restroom.
It must be tough for the Angel, getting hit with sudden sleepiness like that.
I could never fully understand what it’s like for her, living with narcolepsy every day.
“Fourth-floor girls’ restroom… supplies are fine.”
The Angel emerged from the restroom, marking a check on the list.
“Got it. Next one, then?”
At this pace, it’ll probably take about thirty minutes again today.
Since seventh period ends at 4:30 p.m., doing this means we’ll head home around 5:00 p.m., just like yesterday.
But leaving at 5:00 p.m. means I’ll miss the chance to visit the matcha tiramisu shop I’ve been dying to try.
Since I’m not in any clubs, my only after-school hobby is wandering around town alone, but with these inventory checks, it looks like I won’t make it this week.
“…Something wrong?”
As I inwardly slumped my shoulders, the Angel, as if sensing it, peered up at my face with those big eyes.
“Oh, well… I was hoping to go somewhere today.”
“Go somewhere?”
Should I tell the Angel about my hobby of spending time alone? Would she laugh if I admitted that, as a guy, I enjoy strolling around town and eating sweets?
“What’s up?”
As I hesitated, the Angel opened her gentle eyes wide and asked again.
Might as well talk about it. It’s a good chance, and I doubt she’d make fun of me.
“Well, actually, I kinda like wandering around town and eating sweets.”
“Sweets…?”
“You know, since I’m not in any clubs, I usually take the train to places like Shinjuku or Shibuya after school and try out sweets that are trending on social media.”
“Sweets…”
“So, I was planning to go today, but…”
“Sweets sound… nice.”
The Angel was oddly fixated on the word “sweets.”
Maybe she likes sweet things too?
“Yukino, do you like sweets?”
“Yeah… I *absolutely* love them…”
“Absolutely” love, huh?
She’s got some unexpectedly sharp word choices.
“But…”
“But?”
“My mom only takes me to shops on her days off…”
“Oh, right.”
With her narcolepsy, it’s probably dangerous for Yukino to go out alone since she could fall asleep at any moment.
“Since I might collapse and sleep like yesterday, my mom usually drives me to and from school… and I’m not allowed to go out alone…”
I wasn’t sure how to respond.
Saying “that’s tough” felt too detached, but just muttering “I see” seemed too dismissive.
“I sometimes watch videos of sweets on social media, so… I’m jealous of your sweets.”
She’s just a teenage girl, after all.
“Hey… I…”
“Hm?”
“…N-Never mind, it’s nothing.”
“Oh, okay.”
The sweets conversation ended there, and we didn’t talk about anything unnecessary after that.
Learning a bit about the Angel’s private life felt like progress, but her personality was still hard to pin down.
✳︎✳︎
It was the third day of inventory checks.
Not being able to wander around town or hunt for sweets after school lately has been stressing me out.
But just two more days to go.
Starting next week, I can roam the city to my heart’s content after school.
With that as my motivation, I entered the Nurse’s Office.
“Excuse me.”
“Hey, Nukumori, you’re finally here!”
For once, Sano-sensei was at her desk working, while the Angel, for some reason, was standing with her bag in hand.
Holding her bag—does she have somewhere to go after this?
“Nukumori, Yukino says she has something to talk to you about.”
“Something to tell me?”
When I looked at the Angel, Komichi Yukino blinked rapidly, her face turning bright red as she glanced at me.
“Actually… I… I got permission from my mom to go out.”
“Nice, Yukino. That’s great.”
So that’s why she was standing there, bag in hand, ready to go out with her mom.
“Since you got permission, have fun—”
“Um… if it’s okay…”
“Huh?”
“I’d like you to take me out.”
Take her out? Me???
I instinctively looked at Sano-sensei.
“I’ll handle the inventory checks here, so today, you’re escorting our dear Yukino out, okay?”
“W-Wait, what!?”
