Chapter 2: The Sleeping Angel and Sweet Breaths
To do my job as a health committee member, I came to the Nurse’s Office, but due to some circumstances, I ended up alone with the rumored “Angel of the Nurse’s Office,” checking toilet supplies around the school.
I never imagined I’d be working one-on-one with that angel, Komichi Yukino…
“Hey… let’s get going.”
“Huh? Oh, yeah.”
Prompted by the angel, I grabbed the checklist for supplies and a pen from the nurse’s desk, along with a basket full of toilet paper, and left the Nurse’s Office.
And so, my work with the angel began… or so it went.
“…”
“…”
There’s… absolutely no conversation.
We’re walking down the hallway together, but there’s no talking.
It’s only natural since we’re practically strangers, but… it’s kind of awkward.
I wonder if the angel thinks, “This guy has zero social skills.”
Well, unlike other guys, I’m not exactly interested in her to begin with, and I’m not looking for some giddy, romantic encounter, so it doesn’t matter…
While thinking about this, I glance sideways at the angel walking next to me.
Her light, translucent hair reaches her shoulders.
It’s incredibly beautiful… and her face is so small.
She’s a bit shorter than my shoulders, so maybe around 150 to 160 cm?
But man, the angel is so skinny.
Her waist and arms look like they’d snap if you bumped into her too hard, and even in her uniform, her slenderness seems almost abnormal.
Is this angel eating properly?
“…!”
Maybe because I was staring too long, the angel narrows her eyes and gives me a suspicious look.
Crap… did I stare too much?
I quickly look away.
Gotta say something to cover it up.
“Uh, so! Should we start checking supplies from the fourth floor? If we do the first floor last, we can just head straight back to the Nurse’s Office to submit the checklist!”
I flail my hands while suggesting this, and the angel nods slightly before heading up the stairs first.
I let out a sigh of relief, feeling like I dodged a bullet.
Truth is, I’m not great at talking to girls.
My after-school hobby of wandering the city would probably be more fun with a cute girlfriend, but… I’m always alone.
I’m not here to debate whether I “want” or “don’t want” a girlfriend, but with zero romantic experience, there’s no sign of one happening for me, Shunta Nukumori.
Even now, I can think the angel next to me is “cute,” but… that doesn’t mean I want to date her or can imagine her as my girlfriend. I just don’t.
Wandering the city is like that too—one’s easier, you know?
“…Hm?”
Lost in thought, I accidentally bump lightly into the angel walking ahead of me.
“Oh, sorry.”
“We… have to part ways now.”
“Huh?”
The angel stops, her face serious, and suddenly says something that sounds like a breakup line.
W-Wait, part ways!?
“No, no, no! Part ways? We’re not even together!”
“…? But from here on, it’s the girls’ restroom, so we have to split up…”
“Huh? Girls’ restroom?”
I lift my gaze from looking down at the angel and see the girls’ restroom sign right in front of me.
I was so caught up in my thoughts, following her back, that I didn’t even realize where I was.
“You don’t… want to go into the girls’ restroom, do you?”
The angel’s gaze slowly turns into one you’d give a suspicious creep.
“S-Sorry, it’s nothing!”
I dive into the boys’ restroom next door like I’m escaping.

After that, we continued checking supplies on the fourth, third, and second floors without any issues.
If toilet paper was low, we refilled it from the basket we brought.
The angel worked efficiently, and though we barely spoke, thanks to her, the girls’ restrooms were handled fine.
Finally, we arrived at the first-floor restroom.
“Just this one left, huh? It’s going faster than I thought.”
“…Mmm, mmm…”
A soft, floaty response comes from beside me.
What’s with the angel? That was such a half-hearted reply.
I glance at her, and—
“What!?”
Swaying side to side, rubbing sleepy eyes, is the angel.
She’s got this unbalanced, hollow-eyed look, like a hungover old man.
And then, like a robot whose battery died, the angel’s body goes limp with a “thud.” Komichi Yukino collapses onto the floor, eyes completely shut.
Her uniform skirt spreads out on the ground as she sits in a proper, girlish pose, motionless like a doll.
What in the world is going on?
We’re so close to finishing with this last restroom.
“Hey, Yukino? Yo, you okay?”
I call out to her, unable to process what’s happening, but there’s no response.
Is Yukino… asleep?
Or is this some kind of zen meditation?
“Gotta wake her up.”
Worried, I reach toward her face—
“Hey, hold it right there, kid!”
“Whoa!”
Out of nowhere, a woman with short chestnut hair wearing a white coat appears.
Who’s this? A science teacher or something?
“Hi, hi! I’m Sano, the school nurse!”
This is the school nurse!?
She’s wearing a red blouse, a black miniskirt, a white coat over it, pantyhose, and red high heels—the kind of outfit guys would dream up for a school nurse.
No, something’s off… I’m pretty sure the school nurse at this high school was an older lady.
“If I remember right, the school nurse was supposed to be an older woman.”
“The previous nurse, Ms. Yasumoto, retired last month due to health issues. And stepping in is me, Riria Sano, a fresh-out-of-school, sprightly first-year nurse!”
“Uh, okay…”
Sprightly? That word’s kinda outdated.
“Since you’re with Yukino in front of the restroom, you must be the health committee member from Class 1-B, right?”
“Yes, I’m Nukumori, the health committee member.”
“Yukino’s caused you some trouble, huh, Nukumori-kun. Now, what to do with our sleeping Yukino?”
Ms. Sano puts a hand to her chin, looking at the angel.
“Maybe it was too soon for Yukino…”
“Too soon?”
“Hey, Nukumori-kun, forget about checking supplies on this floor for now. Could you carry her on your back to the Nurse’s Office?”
Ms. Sano gives me a wink as she issues the order.
Too soon? What does that mean?
“I don’t mind, but… what’s wrong with Yukino? If she’s sick and passed out, shouldn’t we call an ambulance?”
“No need for an ambulance with Yukino’s condition. But since you saw what happened, I’ll need to explain a few things.”
“Huh? Okay?”
Condition? A few things? I don’t get it, but… for now, I need to get this angel to the Nurse’s Office.
I crouch down to carry her on my back.
Her eyelashes are so long… and her face is so small.
“Zzz… zzz…”
She’s making cute little sleeping sounds, showing no signs of waking up.
Careful not to wake her, I gently lift the angel onto my back and follow Ms. Sano toward the Nurse’s Office.
But seriously, why did the angel suddenly fall asleep?
