Chapter 11: The Angel’s Mother
The Angel and I returned to the high school and headed straight to the Nurse’s Office, where her mother was waiting.
“Excuse us,” I said.
“Hey, Nukumori! And Yukino, you’re finally back!” came a voice from inside.
In the Nurse’s Office, Yasumoto-sensei and a tall, slender woman with sharp eyes and short black hair were waiting. The woman wore a sleek black lady’s suit, held a tablet in one hand, and had an expensive-looking watch on her wrist.
Could she be…?
The woman in the suit noticed me and approached with graceful steps.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Komichi’s mother,” she said.
So, she really was the Angel’s mother.
“N-Nice to meet you,” I stammered.
From her letters, I had imagined a soft, gentle mother, but she seemed the complete opposite. Like the Angel, she had a cool demeanor, and her sharp gaze made me shrink a little. Her suit and tablet gave off the vibe of a businesswoman.
“Thank you for looking after Komichi today. I hope she didn’t cause you any trouble,” she said.
The Angel’s mother spoke calmly, like her daughter, keeping her emotions in check, which made it hard to read her.
“Mom… I didn’t fall asleep today,” the Angel said.
“…What? Really?” her mother asked, turning to me immediately.
“Y-Yes. She was full of energy the whole time… not, uh, greedy for food or anything,” I said.
“Greedy for food?” she repeated.
The Angel’s mother didn’t miss my slip-up. Damn, my true thoughts slipped out…
“Shunta-kun, you didn’t have to say that,” the Angel huffed.
“But it’s true,” I shot back.
“It’s not… I wasn’t being greedy,” she insisted.
“You ate that much and call it not greedy?” I countered.
“That much? My stomach still had room!” she protested.
“That’s what being greedy means!” I said.
“Okay, okay, that’s enough!” Yasumoto-sensei interrupted, steering the conversation back. “Is it true Yukino didn’t fall asleep?”
“I wasn’t sleepy at all… Look, here’s my heart rate,” the Angel said.
When she showed her smartwatch to Yasumoto-sensei, the teacher’s eyes widened in surprise.
“It’s true. Yukino’s heart rate stayed steady at walking levels the whole time…” Yasumoto-sensei said.
Was it really that surprising that the Angel didn’t fall asleep? I had thought it was just one of those days.
“It’s wonderful that Komichi didn’t fall asleep, but more importantly, I’m glad she didn’t cause any trouble for her friend. Let’s go home now, Komichi,” her mother said.
“Okay,” the Angel replied.
Without breaking her cool demeanor, the Angel’s mother picked up her daughter’s things and opened the sliding door of the Nurse’s Office.
“Nukumori-san,” she said as she was leaving, “this is the first time I’ve seen Komichi talk so much with a friend. She must trust you a great deal. Please continue to look out for her.”
With that, she took the Angel and left.
She was cool until the very end.
I had thought the Angel lacked charm at first, but it seems she got that from her mother. (Though in the Angel’s case, she became pretty lively after giving in to sweets.)
“Nukumori!” Yasumoto-sensei called out.
“What’s with that look?” I asked.
“Doesn’t this mean you’re officially a parent-approved couple now?” she teased.
“Ugh, Yasumoto-sensei, don’t mess with me,” I groaned.
“I’m not messing with you! And you know, that gorgeous mom is single right now. You could go for a mother-daughter combo!” she said.
“Seriously, the HR department at this school must be insane for hiring you,” I shot back.
“That’s harsh!” she whined.
Yasumoto-sensei and I stayed behind to chat a bit. She sat at her desk, and I took a seat on the sofa.
“So, how was it? Did you have fun on your first date, virgin boy?” she asked.
“It’s not like I’m bitter about it, but it’s more suspicious for a first-year high schooler not to be a virgin,” I replied.
“Fair point. If you weren’t a virgin, I wouldn’t let you lay a finger on our Yukino. You’re a chosen virgin, you know,” she said.
Is she mocking me or defending me? Which is it?
“So, was it fun?” she pressed again.
“Well… yeah,” I admitted.
It’d be a lie to say it wasn’t fun, and I’d probably get punched if I said otherwise.
“Ugh, this guy’s living the high school dream. So annoying!” Yasumoto-sensei said, looking up at the ceiling in mock frustration.
You’re the annoying one here.
“Anyway, let’s put my jealousy of your youth aside,” she said.
“Don’t make a mess and then leave it for someone else to clean up,” I retorted.
“More importantly, it’s surprising that Yukino walked around the busy streets of Asakusa for two hours without a narcolepsy episode,” she said.
“Really?” I asked.
“Yeah… Yukino has narcolepsy symptoms pretty often, even at school,” she explained.
The Angel herself was surprised, so it must have been unusual.
“Hey, Nukumori, I have a suggestion,” Yasumoto-sensei said.
“A suggestion?”
“Would you mind going out with Yukino again for a while?” she asked.
“Huh…?”

Chapter 12: How to Connect with the Angel
I was stunned. Komichi and I, going out together from now on…?
“N-no way, that’s absolutely impossible!” I stammered.
“You managed it today, didn’t you? What’s the problem? Do you hate Komichi or something?” Sano-sensei asked.
“It’s not that I hate her! It’s just…” I trailed off.
Komichi was the kind of girl everyone at school called untouchable, a true high-class beauty. Meanwhile, I was just a loner guy in class whose hobby was wandering the city alone.
No matter how you looked at it, I wasn’t someone who could match up to Komichi.
If people saw us together… they might not take it well.
“Are you feeling some kind of hierarchy thing?” Sano-sensei asked.
“…How did you know?” I replied.
“Well, Komichi’s super popular, and you’re… well,” she said with a sigh on that last part.
Sano-sensei’s bluntness was as rude as ever, but she wasn’t wrong…
“You’re someone Komichi needs for her treatment,” she continued.
“Me? For Komichi’s treatment?” I asked, confused.
“There’s no clear cure for narcolepsy. So, we try everything we can. And if ‘being with you keeps her awake’ is one of those things, then you’re necessary for her treatment.”
“But she fell asleep the first time we met,” I pointed out.
“That’s the thing,” Sano-sensei said.
“What?” I asked, puzzled.
She stood up, walked to the blackboard in the Nurse’s Office, and picked up a piece of chalk.
“We don’t know what causes Komichi’s narcolepsy,” she explained. “But the fact that she didn’t have an episode while walking and talking with you for a long time is significant. It’s also true that she fell asleep when you first met.”
“Uh, okay…” I mumbled.
Sano-sensei wrote “Shunta LOVE” and “Shunta UNLIKE” on the board and smacked it for emphasis.
I had no idea what she was getting at.
“So, as part of the process, maybe Komichi stays awake when she’s having fun talking,” she suggested.
“Having fun talking…? Oh, yeah, when we went to Asakusa, Komichi was super excited the whole time. She even talked more smoothly than usual,” I recalled.
“That’s why I’m asking you to keep hanging out with her,” Sano-sensei said, sitting back down and whining like a child.
“Well… if it’s for that, I’ll help out. But going out with Komichi every day? That’s not realistic,” I said.
“No, do it,” she insisted.
“What? Are you some kind of black-hearted corporate boss?” I groaned.
Sano-sensei acted like a theorist but was pushy as hell.
“I get what you’re saying,” I said. “But I want to hear Komichi’s opinion first. Let’s put it on hold for now.”
“Fair enough,” she conceded. “But I bet Komichi would love to go out with you again.”
“Really…?” I asked skeptically.
“Girls, you know, when they’re having fun or feeling happy, their steps get lighter,” she said.
“Uh, sure,” I replied, not quite getting it.
I didn’t fully understand what Sano-sensei meant, but if it was for Komichi’s sake, I wanted to help honestly, without worrying about my own status.

The next day.
I dragged myself to school, rubbing sleepy eyes as usual, and headed to the classroom.
Last night, I’d fallen asleep while sorting photos and videos from Asakusa into my “me time” folder.
Right now, my head was full of thoughts about where to go next for my alone time, but I also had to think about places to go with Komichi.
If we did this “going out” thing again, Komichi would probably just dump the destination choice on me anyway.
“Sigh…” I muttered.
“Good morning, Shunta-kun,” a voice said.
It was Yuriha Tamachi, the class president, her long, delicate black hair swaying as she approached my desk.
Ugh, Yuriha Tamachi…!
Getting spoken to by her first thing in the morning? Today was going to be a bad day.
“Can I ask you something?” she said.
“What is it?” I replied.
“You didn’t do your health committee duties yesterday, did you? Slacking off?” she asked.
How the hell did she know I skipped checking the supplies yesterday…?!
“That’s none of your business!” I snapped, looking away to dodge the question.
“One more thing,” she added.
“What, you said you had one question!” I shot back.
“I saw you with Komichi the other day. Are you two close?” she asked.
“…No comment,” I said curtly.
“Interesting… It’s just strange, you know? Someone like you, who doesn’t care about anyone around them, getting along with a girl? And Komichi, of all people,” she said.
I couldn’t find words to respond.
It wasn’t just her. Everyone probably thought the same thing…
“That’s all I wanted to ask. Excuse me,” Yuriha said.
She turned on her heel and went back to her seat.
Coming all the way over just to throw shade at me? Talk about a bored person.
Still, this whole thing about how to connect with Komichi…
Between that and picking the next destination, I had a mountain of things to think about.
